Could the blacking up be the reason why they are struggling for membership?

Years ago I was watching the Silurian side who imo are 'real' border morris. They blacked up to performed and a coloured guy stood in the audience with a sign around his neck saying 'beware of cheap imitations' it was not a dig, it was his sense of humour and said nobody in their right mind should complain about this type of blacking up. Athough he did not have the same feelings about the Black and White minstrals

When I refer to 'real' border I don't mean this explosion of sides that are more costumed lead to cover up their lack of knowledge about the proper way to dance border.

Tim
Border morris dancers black their faces because it originated from the days when people blacked their faces when begging to use as a disguise, as begging was illegal in those days, so they didn't want to be seen as they could face severe punishment if caught.

However, many people these days, think it's rascist.

So as such, many morris dancers, use two or more colours on their face to avoid the rascist connotation.

So is there a problem with depicting coal miners in that way?

Well the only problem as I see, is they are border and it would seem some of them are blacking up (Well I think so from the video). I do not have a problem with that, but there are plenty who do. Some of them have other colours besides black which is OK

Hello,

Please can you promote our request for musicians and dancers on your website and/or any other networks or contacts that you may have. We are a voluntary morris dancing side and we need musicians and dancers to join us. I attach a photo of us for your information.

Many thanks

We particularly need melodeon or piano accordion players but fiddles, whistles, etc. are also welcome. Dancers need no previous experience and will be taught a variety of dances.
