Does anyone know how I can get the Rounder CD by Margaret Barry I sang Through the Fairs. They only seem to sell MP3

Rounder has dropped just about all of their trad recordings. I have one copy left--call me at 800/548-3655 to order.

This is a real concern. The Margaret Barry CD is part of the excellent Alan Lomax Collection, which Rounder had available on CD for several years. Apparently, the Lomax family has stopped production of the Rounder Lomax Collection. I sure hope they come up with a suitable way of providing these valuable recordings and notes to the public.

Rounder has been acquired by the Concord Group, which appears to have zero interest in re-issuing complete albums. Some stuff pops up on compilation CDs, but very little.

is it really the Lomax family that have stopped production of the Rounder series? I assumed it was Rounder that had done this, not the family. It would be a real shame if these CDs were no longer available. Some are available from download, but I much prefer to have the physical CD!

Thank goodness I have some of her old LPs but I want one for the car and I like handling a well presented CD and the notes.

Hi Mike,
Claddagh records in Dublin have 2 of her CDs and do a postal service,
One is called Mgt Barry, queen of the Gypsies and the other is a recoding with Michale Gorman, which may be the same as the Rounder album.

There's this one from Topic Her Mantle So Green though I haven't heard it. MB also appears on some of their Voice of the People discs, you would need to check the track listings to discover which.

She appears in this Saydisc recording of traveller music.

If you want to download then burn your own CD (they do allow it and the downloads are good quality) then Smithsonian Folkways are worth the visit. They even have the sleeve notes downloadable as a PDF. She's on most of this one also.

Rounder gave them up. I tried to get permission from the Lomax family to re-release them, but was told that they wouldn't consider it unless I agreed to include the printed booklet. I explained that printing costs were excessive in light of the limited market, but that I'd include the notes on the CD in a printable PDF format; they said it wasn't sufficient. I have no idea what Amazon offered, but they wound up with them---available only as downloads.

BTW, Topic has done the same thing with many of their older albums.

I'm in the US. The CD, including shipping to the UK would come to 13.90 GBPounds at today's exchange rate.

Thanks for that info. I think the difference with Topic is that their LPs have been deleted for many years and they regard download as the only feasible option - some of the original LPs sold small numbers at a time when Topic was issuing several albums every month. With Rounder, these were recent releases, specially produced for CD, but they haven't lasted long on the record shop shelves. (Ha - record shops!! a think of the past here and no doubt in the US).

As a matter of interest, how does one find out which "long-deleted" albums Topic actually have available as downloads? The Topic website does not mention the download option anywhere, it's as though it does not exist. Or am I missing a button somewhere?

Dunno why, but Topic no longer lists their downloads on their site. They're available at amazon.com and amazon.co.uk, but, for some idiotic reason,there doesn't seem to be any listing of available titles--you have to know what you're looking for

All topic digital downloads are available from e-music.com. So far there are 172 albums.You can browse thier catalogue without committing yourself to purchase. Simply search under "label" from the dropdown menu and enter "topic". Then click on Topic/Ioda and browse.
