Okay - catch this one whilst you can, a 30-minute Edited Highlights of The Transports production from the 1987 as broadcast on Folk on 2; directed by Taffy Thomas with Jim Eldon as The Ballad Singer, featuring Peter & Jenny Bellamy singing The Greenfields of England and PB delivering a mighty Abe Carmen and John Kirkparick as musical director (his tender variations on The Leaves in the Woodland are among the many highlights on offer here; one almost feels tempted to resent PB's narration!) and... Oh, just download the bloody thing and enjoy!

Peter Bellamy - The Transports, Folk on 2, 1987

It'll be available for the next 6 days, or 100 downloads max, but if anyone misses it enter your plea here and I'll post it up again.

*

Even though it's heavily edited, I can't help feeling much of the editing has taken place at the hands of whoever recorded the broadcast (not me!). Does anyone have a more complete version??? For now though, there's plenty here for everyone I would have thought. Starts off sounding a bit scrappy, but picks up after a few seconds - not bad for a 25-year-old Sony HF 90!

Was anyone else at the very first public performance - Norwich FF, c. 1978-80?

Paws: Yes, I think that was the one I reviewed for The Guardian ~~ I remember Pete was very scathing at one locution I employed: but then, he would be ~ that was Pete.

Suibhne - thanks so much for the link.

I was going to be Susannah in the 1980 Herga performance at the National festival at Loughborough in 1980, but unfortunately (for work reasons) moved to Chipping Sodbury early in the year, so Anne Lennox-Martin was a brilliant Susannah instead....

I remember having a song by Cyril Tawney called "The Transports"

It referred to the criminals and immigrants who were transported to Aus and N Zealand in the 18th and 19th century.

Great song! wish I could find it.

That's from the first recording of The Transports (1977) featuring Cyril Tawney as The Shantyman, with assorted Transports providing the chorus. My PB-ammended copy states Anthea & Peter Bellamy, Mike & Norma Waterson.

Thanks Suibhne! I missed this first time around.

A few years ago we did a production here at the Old Songs festival in upstate NY. What a show!

Thanks Suibhne, listening now. I remember recording the original broadcast, but sadly long lost. Good luck with your search for a complete version.
