I liked her first album, and occasionally myself play "Love has no Pride" (which I know she did not write, but she did an expressive version of it): as close as I ever get to country. Anyone who can get me to play and sing country has to be a force of nature.

However, as a blues singer and guitarist combined I think Jo-Ann Kelly was better. The "Black Rat Swing" compilation of Jo-Ann's recorded output is magnificent in places.

Oh yes, much love for Bonnie.
She's done great work since, of course, but the first 4 albums are super special to me.
To her credit, Bonnie also works with great players and producers. Her take on Joni's "That Song About the Midway" is something I never tire of. (For me, it's close to musical perfection, if there is such a thing.)As noted above, she pretty much owns "Angel From Montgomery", too.(Both are on Streetlights, which features outstanding, sympathetic work by the great Steve Gadd on drums, and a host of other super-supportive players.)
Lots of great YouTubes, too (of course)..."Tennessee Waltz" w/ Norah Jones is nice, for example.

I think one of her strengths is her ability to move between beautiful ballads like The Dimming of the Day, requiring terrific vocal range and control, to belting out Longing In Their Hearts, and sounding equally at home in either or any genre.
Bluesing with the old-timings, dueting with Jackson Browne, I'd listen to anything she served up!

Actually Miss Raitt was once quoted as admiring Jo-Ann Kelly. I like most of what I'vew heard by her especially her duets with various and multi-assorted artists.

Her father, John, who lived to be 88, (he passed away in 2005) was into music and theater. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Raitt

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Live Theatre.

About 10 or so years ago, I had the pleasure of working on a BBC recording with Bonnie at the BBC Maida Vale studios in front of a small audience.
She was a lovely and gracious lady, and the band were superb too.
Totally professional.
One of the highlights of my career.
And, they called that work???!

Bonnie Raitt is my all time heroine!! My inspiration for singing and for picking up an electric guitar many years ago. I always say she writes and sings the songs I would have written if I could write songs. I think that if I could sing half as well as Bonnie Raitt I'd be a happy woman. I have been to most of her concerts in the UK and live she doesn't disappoint although last time in Manchester - she only sang for just an hour, we felt slightly shortchanged - however she is Bonnie Raitt and can do no wrong!! Some fantastic sessions out there that she's done over the years... great TV prog with John Lee Hooker where they just jam together - and of course her previous works with the likes of Emilou Harris (leaves her standing in my opinion) and her time with Little Feat... Have a look on youtube there's plenty of Bonnie on there to keep you busy!
Do I sound like a fan!

I think she's wonderful and listen to several of her albums often. I have a cassette of her playing live on Radio 2 (I think) from years ago which is wonderful and has some really good slide playing.

It's hard to believe that she went through a period of time being dropped by record company and having difficulties getting work - I think I even read that she did gigs for no payment. Perhaps it happens in some people's careers. One of my favourite blues guitarists, Coco Montoya, went through peiods of time when there was no demand and no work and so went back to 'normal' work.

'I can't help you now' is a favourite.

Listen to this, Bonnie doing John Prine's classic and listen to the people all talking and doing their own thing. She is a legend and this is how she is treated.

Agree, olddude, that's just plain RUDE. You kind of expect it in sessions and at local open mic events in pubs etc, but unfortunately it seems to be spreading everywhere. The last few medium-name gigs I've been to have been spoiled by people nattering away in the crowd, oblivious to the music. Except at the last Fairport convention gig I went to...they seem to attract an audience that actually wants to listen.

The only concert I ever walked out on was the only Bonnie Raitt concert I went to, about 30 years ago. I hadn't been following her career, I expected something folky, got very loud rock music instead, got up and left. Not meant to put her down, she was just doing something I didn't want to hear at the time.

She went through a tough period with addiction that had a deleterious effect on her music and her performance - but emerged on "the other side" to resume making fine, fine music.

Her heart, her compassion, her intellect and her soul shine through her excellent music. "Streetlights" and "Sweet Forgiveness" were my favorites of her early albums. "Longing in Their Hearts" was, I believe, her 'comeback' album after getting clean, and is another of my favorites. There is nothing on that album I don't like, but especially love the title song and "Dimming of the Day."

Yes Big Bonnie Raitt fan seen her several times in UK fabulous.
Ref your tossers talking in the audience. I was at Billy Braggs gig in Norwich last night and I had to tell a very loud woman to shut the fk up. Can you imagine a gob that drowns out Billy Bragg!! The world is getting rife with these idiots. Why do they go to a gig to stand and talk throughit??

Same here last Wednesday at an Arcade Fire gig...the couple to my left were nattering loudly the whole time, getting louder whenever the music got louder.

After 4 songs I turned to them and said "I don't know why you bothered coming here, you could have sat at home and chatted with the albums on as background".

That shut them up for about 10 minutes, then they kicked off again. After the next song I turned to them and said, very loudly: "my daughter bought me a ticket to see Arcade Fire as a birthday present. She's a student and it cost her a big part of her disposable income for the month. You can shut the fuck up now or you can refund her the ticket price because I can't hear the bloody music due to your constant talking".

That seemed to do the trick...or maybe it was the 6 people in the seats behind who applauded my outburst, but they were pretty quiet for the rest of the gig.
