Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: olddude Date: 26 Oct 10 - 11:45 AM Sure have ... incredible. And her version of John Prine's Angel from Montgomery is my all time favorite , no one did it better |

Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 Oct 10 - 01:27 PM I liked her first album, and occasionally myself play "Love has no Pride" (which I know she did not write, but she did an expressive version of it): as close as I ever get to country. Anyone who can get me to play and sing country has to be a force of nature. However, as a blues singer and guitarist combined I think Jo-Ann Kelly was better. The "Black Rat Swing" compilation of Jo-Ann's recorded output is magnificent in places. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: wysiwyg Date: 26 Oct 10 - 02:21 PM Very early fan. Saw her live once, in the round, oh MY. Ya Got to Know Haowwwww... ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Chris C Date: 26 Oct 10 - 02:29 PM Oh yes, much love for Bonnie. She's done great work since, of course, but the first 4 albums are super special to me. To her credit, Bonnie also works with great players and producers. Her take on Joni's "That Song About the Midway" is something I never tire of. (For me, it's close to musical perfection, if there is such a thing.)As noted above, she pretty much owns "Angel From Montgomery", too.(Both are on Streetlights, which features outstanding, sympathetic work by the great Steve Gadd on drums, and a host of other super-supportive players.) Lots of great YouTubes, too (of course)..."Tennessee Waltz" w/ Norah Jones is nice, for example. ~CC |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: C-flat Date: 26 Oct 10 - 02:49 PM I think one of her strengths is her ability to move between beautiful ballads like The Dimming of the Day, requiring terrific vocal range and control, to belting out Longing In Their Hearts, and sounding equally at home in either or any genre. Bluesing with the old-timings, dueting with Jackson Browne, I'd listen to anything she served up! |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: fat B****rd Date: 26 Oct 10 - 03:05 PM Actually Miss Raitt was once quoted as admiring Jo-Ann Kelly. I like most of what I'vew heard by her especially her duets with various and multi-assorted artists. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: open mike Date: 26 Oct 10 - 09:11 PM Her father, John, who lived to be 88, (he passed away in 2005) was into music and theater. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Raitt He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Live Theatre. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Janie Date: 26 Oct 10 - 10:02 PM She may be my absolute favorite. (She, Joni Mitchell and Maria Muldaur are all tied for 1st.) |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 27 Oct 10 - 01:42 AM About 10 or so years ago, I had the pleasure of working on a BBC recording with Bonnie at the BBC Maida Vale studios in front of a small audience. She was a lovely and gracious lady, and the band were superb too. Totally professional. One of the highlights of my career. And, they called that work???! |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Busy Lizzie Date: 27 Oct 10 - 06:15 AM Bonnie Raitt is my all time heroine!! My inspiration for singing and for picking up an electric guitar many years ago. I always say she writes and sings the songs I would have written if I could write songs. I think that if I could sing half as well as Bonnie Raitt I'd be a happy woman. I have been to most of her concerts in the UK and live she doesn't disappoint although last time in Manchester - she only sang for just an hour, we felt slightly shortchanged - however she is Bonnie Raitt and can do no wrong!! Some fantastic sessions out there that she's done over the years... great TV prog with John Lee Hooker where they just jam together - and of course her previous works with the likes of Emilou Harris (leaves her standing in my opinion) and her time with Little Feat... Have a look on youtube there's plenty of Bonnie on there to keep you busy! Do I sound like a fan! |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Nick Date: 27 Oct 10 - 09:20 AM I think she's wonderful and listen to several of her albums often. I have a cassette of her playing live on Radio 2 (I think) from years ago which is wonderful and has some really good slide playing. It's hard to believe that she went through a period of time being dropped by record company and having difficulties getting work - I think I even read that she did gigs for no payment. Perhaps it happens in some people's careers. One of my favourite blues guitarists, Coco Montoya, went through peiods of time when there was no demand and no work and so went back to 'normal' work. 'I can't help you now' is a favourite. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: olddude Date: 27 Oct 10 - 10:44 AM Listen to this, Bonnie doing John Prine's classic and listen to the people all talking and doing their own thing. She is a legend and this is how she is treated. bonnie |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Rob Naylor Date: 27 Oct 10 - 11:13 AM Agree, olddude, that's just plain RUDE. You kind of expect it in sessions and at local open mic events in pubs etc, but unfortunately it seems to be spreading everywhere. The last few medium-name gigs I've been to have been spoiled by people nattering away in the crowd, oblivious to the music. Except at the last Fairport convention gig I went to...they seem to attract an audience that actually wants to listen. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Richard Bridge Date: 27 Oct 10 - 12:22 PM I thought someone said to me once that she married the boss of the record company and was never poor again. Was that wrong? |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Nick Date: 27 Oct 10 - 12:50 PM I don't think she was poor before - she's always played and sung well to my ears :) |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 27 Oct 10 - 08:27 PM The only concert I ever walked out on was the only Bonnie Raitt concert I went to, about 30 years ago. I hadn't been following her career, I expected something folky, got very loud rock music instead, got up and left. Not meant to put her down, she was just doing something I didn't want to hear at the time. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Bobert Date: 27 Oct 10 - 08:42 PM Yeah, she's cool... Not exactly my style of blues but she can get down when she wants to... I'm more a Rory Block kinda guy... B~ |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Janie Date: 27 Oct 10 - 11:19 PM She went through a tough period with addiction that had a deleterious effect on her music and her performance - but emerged on "the other side" to resume making fine, fine music. Her heart, her compassion, her intellect and her soul shine through her excellent music. "Streetlights" and "Sweet Forgiveness" were my favorites of her early albums. "Longing in Their Hearts" was, I believe, her 'comeback' album after getting clean, and is another of my favorites. There is nothing on that album I don't like, but especially love the title song and "Dimming of the Day." |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: GUEST Date: 28 Oct 10 - 05:44 AM Ditto what Janie said in both her posts plus everyone else who made favourable comments - Bonnie Raitt is a dead set legend in her own time! YIU gecko |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: GUEST Date: 28 Oct 10 - 05:45 AM Oops! didn't know I had come undone - as they say! All fixed now. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: GUEST,Chordcrasher Date: 09 Dec 10 - 09:34 AM Yes Big Bonnie Raitt fan seen her several times in UK fabulous. Ref your tossers talking in the audience. I was at Billy Braggs gig in Norwich last night and I had to tell a very loud woman to shut the fk up. Can you imagine a gob that drowns out Billy Bragg!! The world is getting rife with these idiots. Why do they go to a gig to stand and talk throughit?? |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: Rob Naylor Date: 09 Dec 10 - 08:20 PM Same here last Wednesday at an Arcade Fire gig...the couple to my left were nattering loudly the whole time, getting louder whenever the music got louder. After 4 songs I turned to them and said "I don't know why you bothered coming here, you could have sat at home and chatted with the albums on as background". That shut them up for about 10 minutes, then they kicked off again. After the next song I turned to them and said, very loudly: "my daughter bought me a ticket to see Arcade Fire as a birthday present. She's a student and it cost her a big part of her disposable income for the month. You can shut the fuck up now or you can refund her the ticket price because I can't hear the bloody music due to your constant talking". That seemed to do the trick...or maybe it was the 6 people in the seats behind who applauded my outburst, but they were pretty quiet for the rest of the gig. |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: MAG Date: 09 Dec 10 - 10:17 PM yup on me for Bonnie, too -- I miss the Chi-town folks clubs where prople would shush you for speaking in a whisper -- mind you, it got excessive, but it was well advertised they were LISTENING rooms -- |
Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 03 Jan 25 - 07:31 PM I saw her when she was promoting "Sweet Forgiveness" and Sippie Wallace shared part of the set with her and her band. Just recently found out about how her brother needed care for eight years while dying of brain cancer, which had its effect on her schedule at the time. Really love the song "Just Like That," and it's grand that it won Song of the Year. With the recent death of Jimmy Carter, I was thinking of other celebrities who are ardent activists, and Bonnie Raitt is certainly one of them. I'm thankful that she is still with us in spite of everything. And I'm sorry that her current tour won't bring her anywhere nearby. |

Subject: RE: Any Bonnie Raitt Fans ? From: GUEST,PHJim Date: 07 Jan 25 - 10:20 AM My son, now 48, started learning slide guitar when he was 12. At festivals he would hunt out the slide players and qHe asked Bonnie, at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, why she wore the slide on her middle finger. She told him that "I used to flip the bird a lot when I was a kid and have more control over that finger." |
