Some 'catters will know that it is Ray's birthday at the end of Nov. (26th). This year it is a significant one with a "0" at the end.

Colin tells me that Ray, whilst in reasonable health at present (she certainly looked good to me this pm), is too fragile to contemplate a special event at this time.

However with his agreement, I'm putting out a call for birthday cards, from anywhere you happen to be, but all over the world if possible, sent to her at:

He thinks this would really tickle her fancy, and she'd have great fun opening them. I'm putting it out now, as I realise some of you from afar may want to join in.

I'm sure those who saw Ray at the Ballad Workshop in Glasgow in September will be happy to take this on.
It was such a special day and everyone there felt very privileged.

Yes Robyn, the big one really is this year.

Someone further up the postings mentioned "other goodies". For those who don't Ray well, please don't send her any items of food. She doesn't care for chocolate, is diabetic, and is on a very special diet due to the stomach surgery she had a few years ago.
If you really want to add anything, perhaps photos from wherever you are?

Just knowing that people round the world care about her now she can't really sing out in public, and are rooting for her in terms of health, will be an enormous tonic.

I'll keep refreshing this if it doesn't do it by itself

EK Anne, I missed the Ballads club with Ray attending but my wife raved about it after, said it was really quite an occasion. I will make sure there's a card for signing at Lauries tomorrow. The Glasgow branch TMSA AGM, follows on from your Ballads Club session tomorrow and so it might get as many of her Glasgow pals and fans to sign as possible.

The Folk Music Society of NY is having our Festival of Traditional Music, Eisteddfod, this weekend. I will bring a big card and see how many signatures we can fit in. We enjoyed Ray's music many times and are deeply happy that she is still with us.

Ray was very encouraging towards me the first time I plucked up the courage to sing at the National Folk Music Festival in Sutton Bonington in a ballad session in 1999 - gave me confidence to feel that I should be singing in public ... try and stop me these days!! :-)

First met Ray when I was a floorsinger at the Bridge Hotel, Newcastle in 1963. She was very supportive of my attempts and we've remained friends ever since. She is without doubt one of the greatest ladies of folk - and beyond. Card will be on its way.

I see mine - on the far right of the picture. It is a home-made card and has a photo of Ray, wearing black and I'm standing beside her.
It was taken at the Auckland Folk Festival in January 2001, when Ray, Colin, Johnny and a bunch of Northumbrian pipers toured New Zealand. Colin is hidden by one of the cards in front.
I hope she had a lovely day but I can't believe she's reached 70.
