Good morning medear

I have quested an elf to arrange delivery of a little soupcon to wet your appetite for the main course. It will be trusted to the mail and, hopefully, will reach you come rain or snow, before Xmas.

You may open the package and then open the contents as a little starter.

Enjoy.

Thank you, Santa! I will curb my instinct to rip open the packaging and wait for the right day to see what's inside.

Yours, somewhat impatiently,

Oh, I am a contented, though still singularly squirrely, Santa!

Severn's nuts have been gathered, wrapped, packed, and consigned to the tender ministrations of my local Village Postmistress. Soon (within a week or so) his parcel should have completed its perilous journey to Severn's neck of the woods.

Will he wait 'til Christmas to unwrap it, I wonder, or will the intriguing odours of the nuts pervade his being until he simply must open his parcel? No matter: Even if he does, he will still have a layer of wrapping paper and string to get through before the nature of his gift is revealed.

As to when he opens it, Severn may wait until his chosen Midwinter Holiday or not, as far as I'm concerned. I am a squirrel, after all, and we are not troubled by such details -- though I myself would certainly never open any gift sent to ME before its appointed time. One word of caution, though: If--

(As it turns out, one word of caution is rather less than adequate, isn't it? One SENTENCE of caution, then:) If Severn doesn't wish to know what manner of thing lurks inside the wrapping paper, he should not only not open the wrapped gift before his chosen Midwinter Holiday, but he should in addition not read the accompanying note until The Day has dawned.

Whenever and however he chooses to unwrap it, it is my fondest hope that he will enjoy his gift at least half as much as I have enjoyed being his own, his very own

Hi Art!

Sorry I haven't been here to torment you! Somehow it just hasn't happened. Maybe I'm just not creative enough. Do you suppose that's a clue in itself? I hope not....

Anyhow, rest assured that at least some of the time I might have spent thinking up clever clues has instead been spent acquiring, assembling, packing and mailing your PRESENT! It is now officially on its way, complete with a "Do not open till Christmas" sticker. You can ignore that if you like, of course, but that would be the easy way, not the Cowboy Way. In any case, I hope you'll like it!

Have a wonderful holiday!

Near disaster averted, you'll be relieved to hear. Two of the reindeer suffering from frostbitten antlers after doing some errands in Scotland, two more with hypothermia after visiting Yorkshire. You'd think they'd be used to cold weather, living here in the North Pole, but the UK seems to have beaten all records recently for shivering temperatures. But all is not lost - your package has been entrusted to the mail services, who seem confident of making a delivery (with any luck before December 25th), so you won't need to leave out refreshments in the traditional way but you should be assured of your goodies.
It goes without saying, my dear, that if your package should arrive well in advance of the right date you must wait patiently before opening it, or all might turn to dust and ashes as you watch.
Have a most merry and jolly Christmas tide!

Thank you Santa. You may need to make a watery landing. We're not flooded out yet but it's a long way from a sunburnt country here just now. Makes a nice change from drought. Your co-pilot will be treated well, senior moments are common place in out household.
Hmmm so you have a "Ye Olde Poste Office". Sounds like Ye Olde England. Maybe not though. Also bilzzards are happening here in Aus too this year. Have to be patient.
Looking forward to your sleigh arrival.

Ah! Knowing it's coming is a relief ('tho I haven't had a lot of time to think about such things).

Shortly after Christmas is fine...just remember, I work on Sundays (but not on Saturdays or Wednesdays).

Hmmm...that means I'll throw some red and green tartan tarps over everything except Tom, the tree and the cats, see that there's a chair without a pile of books and papers, and make space for single malt and Russian tea cakes and Berlinerkranzer.

I hope you don't mind but your present from me will be arriving just a short while after Christmas. Mrs Claus has persauded me to deliver it in person [ish] to you just after Christmas. One of my elves is coming your way and has offered to hand it to you personally. So, please don't be disappointed if your parcel is not with you for Christmas Day, it will be with you just as soon after as is possible.
Respectfully yours

Fret not Dan. Your prezzie is still under construction but due to the fact I have spent the last week building igloos, stables and small shelters for the dwarves it hasn't got any further.

I KNOW I am supposed to know all the words for snow but I've been here 27 years and never had it so deep - about 15" by my bird table! Trying to keep them fed is difficult enough. There is no post around here at the moment either.

Please remember I use the OLD Christmas for my celebrations - and don't give up on me yet.

Warm hugs from a chilly place.

G'day my little chickadee!

Looking at the weather I am hoping that the number one elf makes it through. It's a determined little bugger so I reckon there's a good chance, especially if there's a nice reward at the end of its journey. anyway, all that nasty white stuff might have cleared by the time it sets off. Let us hope that is the case.

I have been giving a lot of thought to your gift selection. Maybe something for the summer, to match what you have for colder times. I've taken account of one, at least, of your hobbies, just a little something for you to work on. Something spicy and something sweet. Something to listen to as well. It's all in the bag and ready to go.

Allo. I'm one of Santa's elves and I look like being well overworked this year. Not one, not two, not three, but four packages to deliver in time for you lot to pull 'em out from under that tree on Christmas morning. I tell yer - that Santa gets all the credit but who do you think does all the work? Yours truly of course.

And do I get to enjoy a mince pie and a glass of sherry? Not on your nelly mate. I have to stay off the stuff to watch me figure and Rudolph's the only one allowed to have a red nose this time of year.

I can tell yer - I am well looking forward to Boxing Day when I can put me feet up and 'ave a nice glass of plonk, although I think that there might still be stuff to deliver after that. Ah well, life's a wotsit, ain't it?

Down in yond forest free
One evening you could see
A squirrely Santa digging
Underneath the Christmas tree, and singing...

"Oh, I've got a lovely bunch of ho-ho-nuts.
There they are all lying in a heap.
Big ones, small ones, done in paper and string.
Give 'em away, no need to delay," so did that squirrel sing.

"Oi! I've got a lovely bunch of ho-ho-nuts.
I've dug 'em up from all around the woods.
Wrap 'em, tag 'em, seal 'em up in a crate
Then ship the lot to Severn's cot, for Santa can't be late!"

...

My goodness, but squirrels are daft!

The elves have done it again! Every year I worry about whether they'll get the sleigh packed in time, and most years they manage it in the nick (get it? Nick!) of time.

This year the Down Under Express has pulled out of the North Pole in good time, I hope!
Expect it when you see it, but a package is winging its way to you right now!

The sleigh has left and there are no parcels left behind on the cold cold ground, that's a good sign......in a while or so an elf should be trudging through the snow to your mail box with a package. You may open it before The Big Day if you so choose, or put it under the tree (any tree will do) for as long as you can wait.

My Sweetie DOES like chocolate and would, I am sure, be willing to take any off my hands.

Just checking in to see how you are behaving, and the reports I have so far are encouraging. You have been kind to animals and small children, and are helping little old ladies to cross the road, all of which is good. But reports about a break-in at a chocolate shop, in which eye-witnesses reported a person running away who looked somewhat like your good self....not so sure about that. Before the sleigh is loaded do you have anything to say in your defence? Perhaps someone else was the guilty party, and you were trying to catch them before any more mischief was perpetrated?

Because, you know, we wouldn't want to see the sleigh drive off and then notice one forlorn package left behind in the snow........that would be very sad.......
