Hunt and I are doing a lecture at Boston U later this month, ("Dance music, sedition and maple syrup- the musical roots of Old New England" and we're looking for the tune and more lyrics to the following song:

Rally, Mohawks, bring out your axes,
And tell King George we'll pay no taxes
On his foreign tea;
His threats are vain, and vain to think
To force our wives and girls to drink
His vile Bohea!
Then rally boys and hasten on
To meet our chiefs at the Green Dragon.

Our Warren's there and bold Revere,
With hands to do and words to cheer,
For liberty and laws;
Our country's "braves" and firm defenders
Shall ne'er be left by true North-Enders
Fighting Freedom's cause!
Then rally boys and hasten on
To meet our chiefs at the Green Dragon.

Anyone?

In doing research for truly seditions songs of the time period, I came across this site: ThinkQuest
I then Googled the words provided and found the lyrics all over the place. But no tune, alas. I wonder if some other early American tune would fit the bill?

When I first read this I thought it said, "Rally, Mohawks, bring out your exes." That would really scare 'em.

Those Boston hotheads who started up the American Revolution did a lot of yakking about "freedom", but what they were really concerned about, in my opinion, was money. And it's still like that today. It's not really about freedom at all in the USA (or most other places)...it's about money. Every move made is done for and on account of money.

And as Bob Dylan once said, "While money doesn't talk, it swears...obscenity, who really cares? Propaganda, all is phony."

***

I'll also remind you that it was real Mohawks who helped loyal British-Canadian forces in British North America turn back the American invasion in 1812 at the Battle of Queenston Heights. Hurrah for the Mohawks! (the real ones, I mean...) They didn't do it for money.

Been digging around the internet because of this thread. Learned I had the date wrong in my memory for when The Iroquois Confederacy which until 1721 had been composed of the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga and Mohawk was joined in 1722 by the Tuscarora. Anyway, I tripped over this paragraph in a Wikipedia article, which seems to be well researched and well written.

"In 1721 and 1722, Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia concluded a new Treaty at Albany with the Iroquois, renewing the Covenant Chain and agreeing to recognize the Blue Ridge as the demarcation between Virginia Colony and the Iroquois. But, as European settlers began to move beyond the Blue Ridge and into the Shenandoah Valley in the 1730s, the Iroquois objected. Virginia officials told them that the demarcation was to prevent the Iroquois from trespassing east of the Blue Ridge, but it did not prevent English from expanding west of them. The Iroquois were on the verge of going to war with the Virginia Colony, when in 1743, Governor Gooch paid them the sum of 100 pounds sterling for any settled land in the Valley that was claimed by the Iroquois. The following year at the Treaty of Lancaster, the Iroquois sold Virginia all their remaining claims on the Shenandoah Valley for 200 pounds in gold.[32]"

I am a bit nutso over the song Shenandoah in its variant forms and uses. That's why that caught my eye.

999 - Shenandoah is a superb song. I've worked up an arrangement of it in dropped "D" with some partially new lyrics, and I play it frequently. I hope we get a chance to jam on it at some point.
