Subject: Mudcat Radio - Episode I Wed. Night
From: Max
Date: 27 Aug 99 - 03:29 PM

Introducing Mudcat Radio, Episode I "Feet First" Wednesdays 7pm to 8pm EST in Real Audio here at the Mudcat, hosted by Max and Bert.

Episode I "Feet First" is going to be one heck of an experiment. We decided not to do a dry run or an experiment without an audience, and just make it the theme of the show. Anyhow, we're going to expect anything and have fun with it.

The hopeful itinerary of Episode I will be as follows:

  • Theme Song Intro (more about this later)
  • Mudcat Radio and Episode I Introduction
  • What's On (A look around the globe about what's going on out there with Traditional Music - Submissions not only welcome, but necessary)

  • Interview (Episode I - Sandy Paton by Phone Pending)
  • Songs and Mudcatter Song of the Week (Whatever Bert and I want to play live or spin off of CD)
  • Possom Sitings (...make your own witty remark here...)
  • Mudcat Talk (Max and Bert talk about what's going on in the forum)
  • On the Phone 1-888-488-9050 (call ins are welcome throughout the show, but this is possible a planned or organized section... who knows)
  • Folk Talk (whatever we want to talk about)
  • Record Review (Episode I, maybe Guy Wolff's Music From Wolff Pottery)
  • World News (News from Mudcatters around the globe - Australia, Iceland, Canada, etc.)
  • Theme Song Out

We are going to be having a Theme Song Contest for two songs, an intro song at the beginning and a goodbye song at the end.  We can have multiple winners for each and will rotate all the entries.  Send your entries on CD or tape or email them, anything.  The winners will receive Mudcat Music, which could be a copy of Art Thieme's "On the Wilderness Road" (Vinyl) or any number of albums that have been contributed to the Mudcat.

As mentioned above, we will take calls throughout the show, and will also be in the chat, so be sure to put your two cents in one way or another.  We are really interested in a very interactive experience.

We have no expectations really, we're just going to try to have some fun with this.  Feel free to contribute stuff for us to do and talk about.  And be sure to tune in Wednesdays 7-8pm Eastern Standard Time.

Anything to add Bert?

Just joshin', Max. I thought you'd done something to allow "flagging" urgent or important threads, until I opened it up and the subject reads font color=red.....

Sounds like the radio show will be great....wish I wasn't behind a content filter that doesn't allow streaming audio....

Kat has another thread started on this too.........So what IS the procedure? For those of us who are complete computer dimbulbs, tell us early!!! It seems that "CHAT" will be up then...or is it now and I missed it? Are these supposed to be "Home Grown" type theme songs or are things off albums included too?

############################ ########################### and Cleigh asks:

Dear Mr. Max,

I'm very excited about the new Mudcat program. Catspaw says that if I want, I can sit here with him and listen in. Of course, I want to, so if it's OK with you, since I'm not really a member, I'LL be right here with Catspaw. I wanted to ask you two other things.

First, could you tell me what the "Possum Sitings" part is about. Since I'm a little, clay possum, I was wondering. And second Mr.Max, Sir, I'd like to know if you will blow up my derriere in Washington this October. Catspaw says he will make a $20. donation for the picture and I think some others will too.

Thank you for your consideration of these requests.

Best Regards,
Cleigh O'Possum

Keep us both posted Max and Bert!

I went to the "real audio" site, but I can't tell what to download. It says the download is free, but then it talks about $39.95 and $29.95 and asks for my credit card number. And... I am just not certain what I need to get. I'd rather go the free route, if possible.

Anyone? Anyone?

WyoWoman--
There are several versions of real audio, but all you'll need is the basic one that's available for free. When you go to download it, you'll be asked a few questions about what operating system you want it for (Mac, Windows, DOS, Unix, etc.) , and how fast your modem works--these will help make sure you get the version that works on your system, but as I mentioned, the baic system is free. They also ask for a batch of personal information, which I filled out with so many typos that I didn't bother to correct that it's useless to anyone.

Skarpi--
Programs put on real audio can be heard anywhere in the world, providing of course, the the originating broadcaster has enough bandwidth to feed all the RealAudio listeneres simultaneously (But, Max, you have taken that into consideration--right?) So you can listen in Iceland, although it may be rather late in the evening considering what time zone you're in. (What is the timezone for Iceland, anyway?) And Skarpi, do send news of the folk scene in Iceland. Even if no one else among us gets to experience it first hand, it will be interesting to all of us.

If you go to the Mudcat Quick Links and click on Mudcat Radio, then scroll to the bottom, Max has very kindly included a link to a Real Audio download site.

I went there looking for a link to click on for the live show, but I guess Max is going to spring that on us the day of, since he's being mum about it at the moment!*BG*

Who is thie "Phone Pending" character that is supposed to interview Sandy Paton? Is it an unknown sidekick of Max's or somebody Bert drug in? Does he/she/it have an older brother named Pat? If the correspondant is any good perhaps he/she/it could take over the Possum Sitings feature. "Possium Sitings by Phone Pending" has a nice ring to it.

Alan, in the US, right now, we are on stupid ole' daylight savings time, so it's EDT, until sometime in October, when we fall back to what my dad always referred to as "gawd's time". Hope this helps some. Now where is Max to tell us how to link up with the broadcast??? And, yes, I'd like to know about this Phone Pending person spying possums, too!

Gosh, can't leave for a weekend without anarchy going down. And where was Bert? no help...

OK, It seems you all now know how to get the Real Audio Player, good.

How do you log on? There will be a page, clearly marked in a day or so. You'll just go to that page and there will be a thorough explanation and links and options etc.

What is a Possum siting? We thought we would take calls and emails etc, reporting sitings of the elusive possum. For instance, I saw him in a Burger King in Kalamazoo Michigan asking for directions to Big Mick's house. It cause quite a panic, but the Possum left without incident. Turns out though most got exited thinking that Big Mick lived near there, rather than a talking Possum asking for directions.

I would like you folks that live in interesting places like Iceland and Australia, and Cleveland, well anywhere really, to email me with what's going on in your local areas. My email is contibute@mudcat.org. Say what you like, I will not edit much out. The goal is to get a feel for what life and an average day is in your area, but make it what you want.

The chat was expected this week, but there are issues around it now. We're going to try like hell to have it up in the nick of time for Wednesdays show, but there is no guarantee at this point.

Yes, Charlie, I have taken that into consideration. We have lots-o-bandwidth on our side. We will be learning new tricks and such as we go and will not have an accurate analysis of performance till we do it so we're using this great new method of crossing fingers.

For the comedians out there, it should read: Interview (Episode I - Sandy Paton by Phone - Pending)

Sandy was not sure he would be available at that time, so he's gonna get back to me. The backup plan is perhaps Possum Pending.

Oh, and Cleigh... the price is now $200.

Is Possum Pending a relation to Cleigh? Does he have a big buddy named "Pat" too? Will the interview be called "Pat & Pending?"

Jeri, (smartass comments about the price of possum puffing are foregone (is the past tense "forewent?") due to my respect for Max's ability to do something nasty to my cookie.)

Bert hasn't been much help at all yet has he.

I was off work Friday and I don't get time to play with Mudcat on Weekends. So I didn't see this thread, or get the voice mail message that Max left me on Friday, until this morning.

Jeri, what Max will do to YOUR cookie is nothing compared with what he is going to do with Cleigh's.

The title of 'Feet First' is going to be very appropriate, so all you professional reporters out there will need to cut us a bit of slack. We are going to need all the help we can get 'cos we're just nerds at heart and don't know doodely squat about broadcasting.

Just join us and have fun.

Bert, (BTW, I just saw the Possum at the Exton Mall)

I would note here that Cleigh doesn't have a cookie and although he does have a picture page, I wouldn't want the boy to get too Mudcat crazy because he can't type and I get tired of doing it for him, even occasionally.

However, you must be seeing some relatives. Cleigh couldn't possibly have been seen in the places you mention since he hasn't left his shelf in days. He's been very distraught over Leej's comment that he isn't real. I don't know how to tell him that Max has upped the ante to 200 which Ol' Spaw ain't got!!! He was hoping for a little better response to his request for donations for a picture, but I guess I'll have to break the news to him somehow. Maybe the "Seaweed Shaker" will have some ideas. They've gotten very close.

He does want to listen in with me on Wednesday and that's good, but I hope this latest news doesn't put him into an even deeper funk.

Spaw

No Bert....Sorry, I guess Cleigh should have been clearer. He was hoping that some other 'Catters besides me would kick in for a picture of Max doing the do, but he didn't get much response, so he's a sad little clay possum now.....especially after I just told him about the additional bucks. I'll let him alone for awhile and hope he's doing better later. Schlong, the seaweed shaker, says he'll keep an eye on him for me.

Report from ole' Wyomin': a herd of jackalope were spotted, ranging around the small-sized Cleigh O'Possum, the other night near Chugwater, Wyoming. It is thought that Mr. O'Possum mistook the name of the town for a watering hole for thirsty marsupials, when it really just was an old Native American name describing the sound of water running through a "crick".

It is believed, by animal behaviorists, that the jackalopes, with their horned heads, were trying to protect their diminutive relative from guard dogs from nearby ranches.

Like St. Nicholas, Mr. O'Possum seems to have the ability to appear in many places at the same time. How this is possible is open for speculation. Theories abound, including teleportation, cloning, and astral travel. Perhaps the only one who can clarify this mystery, besides Mr. O'Possum, is his adopted father, 'Spaw, who apparently is just as in the dark as everyone else on this issue.

This just in: it seems Mr. O'Possum, with the aid of the jackalope herd, was able to quench his thirst at the Dew Drop Inn in Powder River, Wyoming and is continuing on his travels. As nocturnal as he is, these sitings are considered phenonmenal in their clarity and there can be no doubt of the personage seen.

His ability to appear in so many places simultaneously is due to the fact that he is related to Elvis. (I've heard that he also sings better than Elvis.)

Some time ago I saw a couple of elderly ladies at the Satellite Hotel in Colorado Springs. They were looking at a postcard of a jackalope and one asks "What sort of animal is that?" The other looked at the card and in a very puzzled voice said slowly "jack - a - lope"
I had to leave in a hurry otherwise they'd have heard me laughing.

Alan in Oz--

The US spans a batch of time zones. From East to West, they are Eastern Time [GMT-500] (ET), Central Time (CT), Mountain Time (MT) and Pacific Time [GMT-800] (PT), and then Alaska Time (AT?) and Hawaii Time (HT), each one hour apart. The time zones come in standard time (EST, CST, MST and PST) from the last weekend in October through the Northern Hemisphere winter until the first weekend in April. Daylight time (EDT, CDT, MDT and PDT) is observed from April through October, except in Arizona, Hawaii, and parts of Indiana.

The Mudcat is in the Eastern Time Zone, and we're on Daylight time until the last weekend in October (Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m. local time).

So I guess no one heard us live. We also lost the first part of the archive but have most of the good stuff.

Well I got there all keen and ready for the start but my Real Player didn't like the format so I downloaded and installed the Real Player G2. When I had installed this and tried to get back to have another attempt at listneng, I couldn't get into any of Mudcat - Bandwith problems? - Maybe it was more popular than expected.

Anyway, I hope it went well for those involved and those that did manage to connect.

Watched the last half hour of the pre-show, listening to Art's CD (Terrific!). It came in loud and clear. A couple after 4pm (pdt) a finger (Max's?) pointed out...suddenly...net congestion. Gone was the program; I then tried in vain for over 1/2 hr to get either the broadcast or the homepage, both in vain. Tried again about 5:15 to get to the discussion forum, but still couldn't get through.

Max, I trust the show went well for those who could get it; I'll look for the archived edition. Normally, I would not have had the opportunity to listen live, but a short hospital stay, and recupe at home gave me a missed opportunity.---John

For what it's worth -- I got on to RealAudio and into the chat just before 7:00. Even managed to send and receive a couple of chat messages. (Could not connect via mIRC at all). Shortly after 7:00 the RealAudio video changed from a 'static' picture of Art's CD cover to some jerky video and then I lost the connection. Chat kept accepting input but did not echo it back. I shut down Netscape but when I tried to restart it the window never appeared. I shutdown Windoze and restarted the computer. Re-established communications but could not contact any Mudcat site. (Netscape told me the server was down or not responding). Gave up about 8:00 and just came back now.

Better luck next week.

Max, Bert & Howie: Just got done listening to the archive. It is far-phucking out!! You did good, guys! I loved the video; so neat to see where the Muducat actually "lives" and to put voices with the faces. Thank you, thank you. Max Headroom eat your heart out....the Mudder's in town!!!

Bert, thanks for mentioning my granddad's poem, Home Range. Your song was hilarious and well-done. I'd love to hear more of yours. Max, you are a great bluesman. Love your voice.

Sandy and Caroline...you sound just as kind and dear and full of folk-wisdom/stories as I've some to know through Sandy's postings. The little bird must've been precious and an otter in your pond? What magic your music must weave. I am sure your place is like heaven, blessed by the Green Man.

I am just sitting here in amazement at the Mudcat, you guys, all the Mudders and the wonderment we call the WWW. Wondering how in the world we all got along before knowing each other through this incredible medium.

Maybe someday, we can set it up for live feeds from around the world and see various bunches of us, on the show, singing and playing our hearts out. I've a great broadcast engineer who'll help out.

Thank the gawds and gawdesses. It was wonderful!

I loved the program. Thank you guys. I know I could have waited until tomorrow but I wanted to hear the program. ("Seeing" the program was a lagniappe.) I have produced radio and television and I know that even what seems to be the simplest production is often overtaken by the tyranny of technology. *You* prevailed. Just for that, you get an extra twenty points.

I had the very pleasant experience of playing along with much of th emusic. I really enjoyed Bert's "Size Doesn't Matter". By the third chorus, I felt I owned the song. I might have woken my wife because I was getting a little carried away - it is a fine chorus.

I wish Sandy and Caroline had been on long enough to talk about the pleasures of collecting. I often fantasized what it would be like to discover a song and then, listening to some of the Library of Congress recordings I wondered if I would recognize a treasure. Most songs, it seems to me, don't present themselves all smoothed out. I would think you have to develop a sense of what a song could sound like as well as the very necessary appreciation for what the song is. I would like very much to hear what the Warners had to say about that, too.

As a part of my work, over the past ten years or more, I have done a lot of oral history recordings and have met a variety of people. By my standards, many of these people are close-minded and wrong-headed about what I think are important life topics but there are other parts of these same people that are warm, charming and caring. I have always had trouble integrating my real affection for these people with my disappointment about their close-mindedness. It sounds as though a number of people around Mudcat have dealt with this problem in collecting songs. Maybe I should start a thread. Anyway, thanks for the program and I was astonished at the quality of the sound.
