Subject: Lyr Add: I PUTS THE LIGHTIE ON (Tommy Steele)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 05 Nov 10 - 03:32 PM

Tommy Steele's recording of I PUTS THE LIGHTIE ON is on 2 albums: "The Decca Years" (1999), and "Singing the Blues" (2009).

It's also on YouTube. from which I transcribed this:

I PUTS THE LIGHTIE ON
Sung by Tommy Steele

1. Man, I couldn't get to sleep the other night.
I was tossin' an' a-turnin' in my bed.
I remembered that I hadn't had a bite,
So my tummy rumbled up to me and said:
"Grab a sandwich, from the fridge,
In the kitchen, downstairs."

2. I decided it was quite a good idea,
So I tottered to the kitchen half asleep.
When I opened up the fridge, a light appeared,
So I opened up an eye and took a peep,
And do you know what I saw
In the kitchen, downstairs?

CHORUS: There's a little man in the fridge
Livin' with the ham and the butter.
He just has to stand in the fridge,
Wait until you open a shutter,
Funny little man with a nightie on.
When I asked him what he did,
He said, "I put the lightie on."

3. Well, I tell you this was really some surprise.
What an interesting thing to think upon!
There must be twenty million other little guys
Turning twenty million little lighties on,
Like the fellow, in the fridge,
In the kitchen, downstairs.

4. Well, he spoke to me and he was very wild.
Said, "You woke me in the middle of a dream."
And I felt just like a misbehaving child
When he told me, "I'm so angry I could scream.
Put the lightie, on yourself,
In the kitchen, downstairs."

CHORUS: Said the little man....

5. In the morning when I finally awoke,
I decided that I should apologize,
But I'm really very sorry that I spoke
'Cause apart from all the eggs and apple pies,
There was nothin' in the fridge
In the kitchen, downstairs.

6. People tell me that I must be going mad,
Or they say I must be having crazy dreams,
Others have a lot of pity on the lad,
But I'm sure it ain't as crazy as it seems,
But there's something turns the light on
In the kitchen downstairs.

CHORUS: There's a little man....

"And as far as I'm concerned, you can ... [the voice accelerates into gibberish.]

I have one of those little guys in my fridge too.

His cousin sounds the beeper that beeps when you get out of the car with the keys still in the ignition.

Dreadful! I remember it well.

Isn't it creepy that I can remember something as appalling as that, and can't remember what I walked out to the shed for!

Earlier than the 70s. Atleast as far back as the early 60s, possibly late 50s. One of the songs from my childhood.

That link's dead, here's another one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Bs21_EprWM

In the comments, it states 'no description available'

Very apt, it's indescribable!!

WOW... there is a blast from the past.

Here on the other side of the pond, I've only seen him in the film Finian's Rainbow... talk about the 99 percenters in that one....

and a small film, name long forgotten, where he was the screwup kid brother.

It was a little easier to find Dirk Bogarde films on the local channel movie slots, but not much.

I used to keep a tally of the different films I got to see of my favorite actors... this was LONG before even VHS came out... by going through the list I refreshed my memory of the films. How times have changed!

Amazing to recall it now, but in the mid-50's, Tommy Steele was at the cutting edge of UK rock 'n roll - on a par with Elvis for those of us who didn't know any better. Then the film 'The Tommy Steele Story' came out, and his reputation was secure for all time. That lasted until 'The Duke Wore Jeans' and 'Tommy The Toreador' were released, which left me feeling like Monty Python's lumberjacks: something had changed, our hero had feet of clay, and there was no way back.

Anyway, I got my first guitar - a blue, plastic four-stringer with Tommy Steele stickers on the front. Now I know several chords and read the Mudcat each day.
