Message from Jude: "We have decided to give the traditional singers' sessions… a rest for a couple of months. Although those who come enjoy the sessions and we have a great sing, numbers have been small for some time.

Due to personal circumstances, I don't have time at the moment to promote and advertise the sessions and do the things that would be needed to bring people in, and can't commit to co-ordinating the sessions for a bit. There won't therefore be a session… until further notice (hopefully a couple of months).

And if there's someone out there who feels like taking it on, let me know.

Apologies to any regulars who weren't at the last session when we discussed this - I will let you know when we start again. Many thanks to all who have contributed to the sessions and shared songs with us over the past year - hope to see you again shortly. Best wishes, Jude."

Due to the superfluity of Thursdays in March the next meeting is NOT this Thursday, but next week Thurs 14th.

Pitch pipes are Accepted (Accepted is not the same as Welcomed) but only to pitch an unaccompanied song correctly. Attempts to play a tune on pitch pipes will be vigourously rebuffed - however interesting a project that might be thought to be.

I'm intrigued, seriously, though I fear I've lost my ability to sing in tune without a drone at least! How about pitch pipes - or would that be seen as the thin end of the wedge?

"Might I make so bold as to enquire how such draconian measures came about?"

The founding fathers and mothers of the group declared at the first meeting that the right of the people to keep and bear instruments shall definitely be infringed.

Hi Derek - We're having Herefordshire saunter at some point in June but not sure when; a day in Bristol is on the itinerary. Nae instruments? Nae bother, though might I make so bold as to enquire how such draconian measures came about?

Just trying to drum up a bit more attendance for this week's session. Not sure whether the assurance of my attendance is working in my favour in this regard, but you have my assurance none the less.

Barney.

Hi Sean. Long time no see.
Should be 9th and 23rd.
You and Rachel would be very welcome. But you'll need to leave all your instruments with the Sheriff at the door!

Derek

It's a singaround.
No instruments are allowed.
A strong tendency towards British/Irish traditional, but we are happy for people to try out whatever material they are comfortable with - and they often do.
Attendance is rather irregular. Last time was very sparse - so we welcome any new blood.
Discussion about songs is welcomed as well.

I'm afraid it's me again, because Jude is tied up this week - but if we get enough to pay the ransom, we'll get her back in March!

Next session this Thursday (27th). Jude can't make it so I will MC; however since I am lobbying Bristol Council at 6 o'clock to try to keep my school open I may not be there dead on 8. But I'll definitely be there! Anyone there early can start singing 'Why are we waiting?'

In spite of the heading, can I point out: there is no traditional singers' session this Thursday Nov 25th because someone else is using the room.
The next session will be on Thursday Dec. 9th, usual time and place.

by a free improvisation group

Time was I'd split my time equally between folk club singarounds & free improv sessions. Not many of the latter around these days, alas - least not in these parts anyway, though we do have at least one good trad sesh within 20 miles and any amount of folk clubs. Bristol, eh? Nice to know on both counts...

The next Traditional Singers' session will be this Thursday, Nov. 11th, upstairs at the Miners' Arms, Mina Road, St. Werburghs, 8.00 pm.

All welcome, whatever level of experience - if you only know one song, this is the place to bring it and to get advice from our regulars about where to find some more. Or if you know lots we'd love to hear them. Many of us sing British and American traditional material ( we operate a very loose definition of 'traditional' ) but all unaccompanied singers from any tradition are welcome - only rule is no instruments (except pitch pipes).

Apologies to anyone who turned up for the last session and found it cancelled - there was a misunderstanding about booking the room (our fault not the pub) and it was in use by a free improvisation group. This Thursday we are definitely booked in, and there are heaters in the room.

Please note there will be no session on Nov. 25th, but there will be one on Dec. 9th.

If you'd like more info, PM me please.

Cheers
Sue
