I know Bill D is a wonderful woodturner. I am a novice but find that this is just one more way to express my creativity. I would think that other 'Catters might also be so inclined. Especially in the UK, as well as Australia, where there are so many Masters.

Well, I'm fiddling around the edges. I'll be doing some woodcarving and such this Winter, but it's hard to do woodturning without a lathe. (I do have two routers, though.)

I only had a brief go at woodturning during high-school in Australia, but I enjoyed it much more than metalturning.

i just found someone to re-produce a spinning wheel bobbin for my wheel
I was looking for a wood turner...and did not think to post a request on here...finally found someone in Wisconsin who was willing to make several bobbins if i would send the original one.

I do a bit now and then. Mostly 'poppadum' bowls; using unseasoned, spalted wood, turnig a thin, flattish bowl, then weight the centre for about 6 months and let the edges 'move' as the wood dries. Results are variable, but the best ones are beautiful flat bowls with wavy edges. I usually wax finish them.

I would love to learn to turn bowls etc. Where do I learn though? I would need to know how to do it, and what would suit my needs, before I went out and spent money on a lathe.
I have been caught out before on buying things like this, I bought a table saw, when what I really needed was a compound mitre saw. I won't do that again, too expensive a mistake.

John...there's far more turners per capita in the UK than in the US. Many give demos. You be surprised how easy it is to start and do 'easy' stuff. There are lathes of all sizes...(I started on a small $89 thing that sat on a table!) One 'ought' to have a bandsaw to make use of 'found wood', but http://www.craft-supplies.co.uk/> will sell you wood already trimmed...and everything else you'd even need.

Does anyone want a treetrunk? I had a tree taken down in my backyard. The fellow who did it took away all the branches but left the trunk. If you need firewood or wood to work, it's there, all you need to do is come and pick it up. Agreed it's a bit of a trip from Australia, and they probably wouldn't let it on the plane. But if y ou live in Western Pennsylvain, or know someone who does, let me know, I'll tell you where to pick it up.
