He also plays for Bampton Morris and is a leader of The Rakes folk / ceilidh / Irish dance dance often working with caller Hugh Rippon at Haddenham. Someone here must have a contact for him. Subject: RE: Paddington Station song and Benny Lynch info From: Big Mick Date: 24 Dec 11 - 09:02 AM Thanks for looking in, Kevin. That background information is very interesting to me. The search continues. All are encouraged to ask around. Happy Christmas to all. |
Subject: RE: Paddington Station song and Benny Lynch info From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Dec 11 - 06:25 AM No, I've never come across it. Paddington Station was of course the place where people coming from Ireland to London would be liable to arrive, since it's where the boat trains from Fishguard ended up, and a strong Irish community grew up there. Sounds a song worth digging up. If Frank McCourt of blessed memory ever came across it you can be sure he'd have it somewhere in his archives - he was every bit as eager to collect new songs out of the tradition as old songs. |
Subject: RE: Paddington Station song and Benny Lynch info From: Big Mick Date: 23 Dec 11 - 04:15 PM I am not giving up on this, as I know someone out there can give me a clue. Here is what I know:
I am trying to track down anyone who has knowledge of Mr. Lynch, with the ultimate goal of finding either a tape of this song, or a transcription of the lyrics. Any clue to this man will give me a starting point. C'mon, Catters, I know someone in this broad audience will know something. Any little piece of info about the person, the group, the recording, or the song, will give me a starting place. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Paddington Station song and Benny Lynch info From: Big Mick Date: 22 Dec 11 - 09:46 AM Thanks for the assistance, Kenny. I know that he was part of a duo that performed in the Chicago area, and my understanding is that he was an Irish immigrant. I was hoping McGrath and others would see this and be able to shed some light on this. |
Subject: RE: Paddington Station song and Benny Lynch info From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 21 Dec 11 - 03:25 PM Mick To save todays refresh i would reckon that the song could have originated in London UK by the reference to Paddington Station . I would suggest that you pm McGrath of Harlow or someone with contacts in the then Irish immigrant population of London who might remember the song. It looks like a good song and am surprised that it is difficult to trace unless it was written and performed ony by the Benny Lynch led duo Hope this helps and keeps the thread going even if folks think the theory is wild. |
Subject: Benny Lynch info From: Big Mick Date: 21 Dec 11 - 12:33 PM Someone has to have information on this musician/performer. Apparently he was an Irish immigrant performing in the Chicago area. I not that a guest indicated he was Benny's son but left me no contact information. Help me out here, folks. I boasted as to how my Mudcatters never disappoint. Any info will be greatly received. |

Subject: RE: Paddington Station song and Benny Lynch info From: Big Mick Date: 19 Dec 11 - 07:55 PM Folks, I am still looking for information on this song and a recording. Here is the original post in this thread. Let's see if the old Mudcat mojo is still fully functional. I was on Beaver Island, playing a weekend concert series at Donegal Danny's Pub for the locals. One of the locals, an author by the name of Rob Cole, asked me if I had ever heard of an irish song with the title of Paddington Station. He could only remember a small snippet of the song. He thought it was an "Irish band working in the Chicago area". He is looking for a recording of the song. He could not remember the name of the band. He tells me he has never heard anyone else do the song. Waddya say, folks? Anyone heard of this recording, or any recording of a song by the name of Paddington Station? I seem to remember a band by that name, but not a song. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Benny Lynch and Paddington Station song info From: Big Mick Date: 12 Nov 10 - 11:38 AM C'mon folks, I know we still have it in us. I have edited the name of the thread to see if that helps. Chicago area folkies, do you remember Benny Lynch? Apparently he was an Irish immigrant singer living and working in the Chicagoland area in the 80's. How about you Irish folks? Anyone from the Auld Sod remember Benny Lynch? It is a recording of the song we are trying to track down. All the best, Mick |
Subject: Anyone remember Benny Lynch - Chicago area Irish From: Big Mick Date: 11 Nov 10 - 11:49 AM He apparently, according to above post was half of the duet that recorded Paddington Station. |
Subject: Benny Lynch and Paddington Station song info From: Big Mick Date: 10 Nov 10 - 09:39 PM I found Rob's follow up email. Here is what he sent me: Paddington Station was the title of the song as I recall, as well as the subject. I first heard it back in 1988 at a pub at the Lansing, IL airport called Shannon's Landing. The band was an Irish-born duo led by the late Benny Lynch. Some snippets of the lyrics: "At Paddington Station, I found restoration, its a story I'm...?" "When Paddy has Powers, it helps pass the hours, and I miss my wee home by the bay..." "If he suffered the loss of His son on the cross, tell me why should God save Ireland? " And that's about it. I've asked a Chicago musician friend who knew Benny Lynch about the song, and am waiting words back. Quite a mystery all these years, and a song that's never left my memory completely. Thanks, and good luck! Rob |
