Subject: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: GUEST,Ray Date: 12 Nov 10 - 08:21 AM It appears to have gone largely un-noticed that Brian Brocklehurst passed away on 26th October. Brian was something of an institution in folk circles during the 1970's and played with more people than you can shake a stick at. RIP Brian Ray |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: Will Fly Date: 12 Nov 10 - 08:26 AM Well I'll be damned - I was reminiscing with Leadfingers about Brian on another thread only the other day. We both remembered him cycling around London wearing a short-sleeved check shire in all weathers, pipe clamped between his teeth - and double bass strapped around his back. A jazz institution - and also a weekly stalwart as the regular bass player on Country Meets Folk - recorded at the Players' Theatre. He lived just round the corner from me in Sussex Gardens - must have been around 80 when he died, then. RIP - a wonderful musician. |

Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: tritoneman Date: 12 Nov 10 - 09:43 AM What a sad piece of news. His fabulous sense of humour, kindness and laid back attitude always took the scariness out of doing live Country Meets Folk performances at the Playhouse. Yes, a wonderful musician too. |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: The Sandman Date: 12 Nov 10 - 10:08 AM did he play with the spinners? |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: The Sandman Date: 12 Nov 10 - 10:15 AM srory i was thinking of john mccormick |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: Will Fly Date: 12 Nov 10 - 10:20 AM Tritoneman - thanks for correcting an ageing memory. It was indeed the Playhouse Theatre. I was running the BBC Folk Club for a spell in the late 1960s and used to get a weekly batch of tickets for club members to see Country Meets Folk. Brock was a lovely man and, as you say, very laid back. |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: John MacKenzie Date: 12 Nov 10 - 10:26 AM Yes he did play with the Spinners, in his guise as resident bass player on Country Swamps Folk, as mentioned above. In fact after one Saturday lunchtime we all adjourned to a local hostelry, for a little light refreshment. I used to go most Saturdays to the recording, in the Playhouse Theatre, near Charing Cross station. |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 12 Nov 10 - 11:37 AM If my memory serves me correctly the local hostelry was the Sherlock Holmes. Hoot |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: GUEST Date: 12 Nov 10 - 11:45 AM Yes Hootenanny. That was the place- In Craven St if I remember rightly... |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: Will Fly Date: 12 Nov 10 - 12:19 PM The Sherlock Holmes was, and is, in Northumberland Avenue. We also used to repair there after watching CMF at the theatre. |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: John MacKenzie Date: 12 Nov 10 - 12:21 PM There was another wee place too, It was a sort of drinking club, first floor, and not that far away from the Sherlock |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: Jim McLean Date: 12 Nov 10 - 12:31 PM That's a sad bit of news, quite a shock. I produced many LPs and alsways used Brian for his incredible sympathetic bass playing. My wife once asked him why he wore the same shirt and he said he'd bought a gross of the same pattern! |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: tritoneman Date: 12 Nov 10 - 12:48 PM Thanks Will. My fading memory...... |
Subject: RE: Brian Brocklehurst - RIP From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 12 Nov 10 - 12:58 PM Me too Will, normally in the company of Malcolm Price. Hoot |

Subject: RE: Obit: Brian Brocklehurst (UK-26 Oct 2010) From: GUEST,Roy Herbert, ex.B,B,C, Prod. R2 Date: 16 Nov 10 - 10:51 AM A stalwart in the studio, very tolerant of lesser talents and amateurs. A good friend and companion he knew all the best pubs.in Maida Vale. He is missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Brian Brocklehurst (UK-26 Oct 2010) From: GUEST,Roger Knowles Date: 16 Nov 10 - 11:47 AM He played bass for Nick Strutt and I on CMF many times. Also Pete Stanley & I. Rest in Peace, Brock, Roger |
Subject: RE: Obit: Brian Brocklehurst (UK-26 Oct 2010) From: GUEST Date: 17 Nov 10 - 09:02 AM Finally some mention of the sad news of "Brock" a wonderful character who became a good friend and will be missed dearly. He was very proud of his contributions to Country Meets Folk which would appear to be only a fraction of the huge number of sessions and people he worked with over the years. He also had his own small group "Brocade" which featured on Radio 2 (and Capitol I believe) for many years playing short segments in various programmes. Let's hope that more of his achievements finally come to light for all to enjoy. Heres to you Brock - Rest in Peace. D |
Subject: RE: Obit: Brian Brocklehurst (UK-26 Oct 2010) From: Old Vermin Date: 17 Nov 10 - 09:57 AM And he certainly seemed ubiquitous as bass-player The passing of an era. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Brian Brocklehurst (UK-26 Oct 2010) From: Old Vermin Date: 17 Nov 10 - 09:59 AM And the italics should off course have come off again. Any obits in the broadsheets? Was at Witney melodeoning, so haven't seen papers. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Brian Brocklehurst (UK-26 Oct 2010) From: GUEST,Alastair Hendrie Date: 30 Nov 10 - 06:52 PM I've just finished watching a BBC Scotland programme about Jimmy MacGregor at 80, which had some old B&W footage of him performing with Robin Hall, and there were some shots featuring Brock, pipe clenched between teeth, playing bass. I remember working as a cameraman on various TV programmmes such as The McCalmans in the BBC's Glasgow studios when he was the bass player, the butt of Ian McCalman's wry sense of humour, but happy to chat with the crew during rehearsals. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Brian Brocklehurst (UK-26 Oct 2010) From: GUEST,Phil Bond Date: 01 Jun 11 - 01:01 AM Phil Bond...It was only yesterday I called his number then found that Brian had sadly left us...In the mid 80's I first worked with Brian and the Soho Jazz festivals...Always a pleasure to work with him and would often end up at his place for coffee.Brian would relate stories of his past jazz world...A great player...You'll be sadly missed, Brian |
