Slightly less than a week to go before the next monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session at The Press Room in Portsmouth NH, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM on 20 November.

Whether or not I'll be able to speak at all next month is yet to be determined. Bur for now I've got the hoarse whisper. Hoping for a good turnout - Tom

Tom-

Looking forward to your rendition of "Poor Old Hoarse"!

I'll be there for sure. Maybe I can get a few more folks to come down with me.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, temporarily resident in NYC

Good session! More later -- nice to see some of the Gloucester crew again. New singer, Mike, with a never heard before song from Cape Breton, I think.

The rest room switcheroo caused a bit of confusion and commentary. Tom says the old mens' room has the best acoustics by far.

Linn-

I think you have the best list of songs and who lead them this time around.

There was a great turnout and at least one new strong woman singer with the Gloucester gang.

And about the renovated bathrooms, the men's toilet is now the woman's toilet and the former woman's toilet is now the men's. All even men and women were filing into whatever they thought was the usual place, some emerging abruptly with puzzled expressions on their faces, and greeted with laughter from the assembled crowd. No doubt some intrepid men made use of the sink where the urinal used to be. Lord only knows!

Some times sessions go by very fast. This one seemed to go on forever, maybe because of the plethora of dirges! I plead guilty to contributing one myself, my tribute to the derelict fishing fleet of Fleetwood, UK.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Decent crowd, too -- besides Tom and me, in attendance were Carol Coronis, Jeri, Charley Noble, Mark Ryer, Chris Maden with a friend whose name I don't know, Bill & Carol Lehman from Boston, Pete & Joanne Souza, Barry O'Brien, Don Hale, Justine, Marty Stock, and Audi Lane, a woman with a wonderful voice who is a friend of Joanne's son. Oh, and a singer I've seen around the The Press Room, etc. off and on for some time whose name is Mike, and came up with some wonderful songs including at least one never heard by anyone before. And Barbara Benn came in late after the open studios in Rollinsford (where a great portrait of Tom is on display).

Here's my list -- (I might have to do this in several sessions; I twisted my already damaged knee and I'm in a bit of pain. I'd really like to eat supper and go upstairs and put the leg up and hope for the best.)

It started slow and picked up speed. I could have stayed for a lot longer, but I needed to stop singing sometime.

Linn-

You did a great job of keeping the song list. Wow, sixty songs! Here's a couple of clarifications for two of mine:

24. "Storm Along Stormy" Based on J. Smith of White's Serenaders at the Melodeon, New York City, from White's New Ethiopian Song Book, published by T.B. Peterson & Bros., Philadelphia, US, © 1854, p. 71.
Adapted by Charles Ipcar 3/29/10
Tune: after "Sail Away, Ladies, Sail Away"

49. "Tramps (Chantey for Steam), words by Ron Baxter and tune by Chris Lock, © 2009

Charley Noble

If I'd had my wits together yesterday, I'd have sealed the UPS box and left it on the counter for the UPS man. Looks like I have to have Tom drive me to work (the knee pain won't let me drive and I can barely hobble) and wait for me while I do what needs to be done first thing. THEN I can go to Lee Urgent Care.

This is worse pain than the kidney stone I had 20 years ago or my broken arm (during which I was either in shock or drugged).

Speaking of drugs, two Darvocet barely touched it last night. I did sleep until midnight, then woke up every hour until 3 when I had trouble getting back to sleep. But I did after changing from sleeping on my back to sitting up in bed with two pillows supporting the knee.

One of my dreams was of my having some man by his forelock, shaking him and screaming, "I don't have any patience! I'm in pain!" No, it didn't look like my boss...

I note that Linn has posted some nice images of this session in Facebook. Here's a link for those who are Facebook members: Click here for PIXS!

A really nice session! I have missed the Gloucester crowd the last few sessions.

Charley Noble

From the "7 Old Ladies" thread --
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ladies in the Lavatory...
From: Jeri - PM
Date: 25 Nov 10 - 11:31 AM

Oh dear, what can the matter be
Ladies are using the gentlemen's lavat'ry
The go through the door from Sunday to Saturday
And everyone knew they went there

Oh dear, what can the matter be
Gentlemen using the ladies lavat'ry...

One to go there, almost it was Jeri
But she'd heard the news, and so she was wary
But I'm sure she'll go in when she gets too merry
And everyone knew she went there
