FROM THE FIELD TO THE FOUNDRY

A Journey with Magic Lantern & Concertinas
Friday 19th. November 8.00 p.m. Doors open 7.30 p.m. Licensed bar
Michelham Priory Great Barn, Arlington, E. Sussex BN27 3QS UK
Tickets £6 on the door or from 01323 844224 (Chris Tuckett)

Images, traditional songs and readings about life on the land in Sussex at the time the Lewes Phoenix Foundry opened in 1832 and the changes it brought to working people's lives. Images from Allan and Rene Marriott's Magic Lantern, the Victorian ancestor of the slide projector. Music from Spare Parts Concertina Band.

The magic lantern, the foundry and the concertina were all at their peak at about the same time. To add to the atmosphere, the performers dress appropriately. The Great Barn provides a wonderful setting for the show.

In aid of the Sussex Archaeological Soiety .

I thought for one moment Taffy Thomas & pals were doing a revival. Ah fond memories of Magic Lantern.
Cheers

Sorry, LesB, I had no intention of passing us off as Taffy Thomas's historic outfit - the magic lantern here is a solid Victorian object, not a band. We've done the show in several places now and it seems popular. As well as being an illustrated piece of local history, it takes traditional music to people who wouldn't otherwise hear it.

Jim Mageean - magic lantern?
Magic lantern - Jim Mageean

Sorry Jim Mageean will win every time and he's on at Seaford Folk Club the same night with Graham Knights.

A choice of two good events for different tastes, Mary. We're lucky in Sussex to have so much music going on.
