Subject: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Nov 10 - 05:00 AM I now have a completely redesigned home page om MySpace. Can somebody tell me where my music tracks have gone? |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: GUEST,Banjiman Date: 16 Nov 10 - 05:01 AM ......same place as ours I guess! |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: RTim Date: 16 Nov 10 - 07:43 AM I hate the new MySpace ....!!! Tim Radford |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: GUEST,BBP at work Date: 16 Nov 10 - 08:09 AM Oh good, it's not just me. I logged onto it this morning for the first time in ages and thought I'd gone off into spamland. I'm not impressed at all. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: RTim Date: 16 Nov 10 - 09:44 AM Another thing about the new MySpace - It doesn't work properly!!! Tim Radford |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Nov 10 - 11:19 AM So that's unanimous then, we all think it's rubbish? :) |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: GUEST,Mad spaniel Date: 16 Nov 10 - 11:21 AM Yep awful, can't get a thing to work |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: bobad Date: 16 Nov 10 - 11:27 AM It looks okay and plays okay for me - maybe some of your settings need to be tweaked. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Maryrrf Date: 16 Nov 10 - 11:27 AM Mine seems to be working now, but I agree - MySpace is crap. What's a better alternative for making your music samples available to the public? |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Tootler Date: 16 Nov 10 - 11:43 AM Mine seems to be OK, but I find My Space limited. I am tending to use You Tube more as there is no limit on how many tracks you can post. If you don't want to make a video, just include a photo or something, I usually include a slide show of photos I've taken round the region I live in. That way I can show something of where I live. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: GUEST,Banjiman Date: 16 Nov 10 - 11:46 AM "Mine seems to be working now, but I agree - MySpace is crap. What's a better alternative for making your music samples available to the public?" Reverbnation is another option. Pretty artist friendly as well once you get your head around it. Paul |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Nobodys bard Date: 16 Nov 10 - 12:02 PM Or Soundclick |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: olddude Date: 16 Nov 10 - 12:09 PM Soundclick for sure. I also use reverbnation but I get tired of their endless emails. I shut down my myspace because I got sick of this stuff |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: olddude Date: 16 Nov 10 - 12:10 PM Bard where is your music on soundclick, I want to give a listen? |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: treewind Date: 16 Nov 10 - 12:12 PM Or onmvoice, Popular at melodeon.net for anyone who wants to post audio instead of You Tube videos. I use YouTube for videos and my own web site for audio. (and a somewhat neglected MySpace, but I'd better check in and see what the fuss is all about) Anahata |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: treewind Date: 16 Nov 10 - 12:15 PM "I'd better check in and see what the fuss is all about" Done that...Looks OK to me. Maybe there was a bit of teething trouble for the first days or two... Is anyone who had problems still having problems? |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Stewart Date: 16 Nov 10 - 12:31 PM I just converted mine to the new format. What a mess! don't like the appearance. The right hand column with embedded youtube videos is too narrow for the videos and no way I can figure out how to either remove the youtube videos or widen the column. There's no way to delete unwanted comments (spam - pictures of scantily clad women with suggestive comments). And it seems difficult to edit and work with. Why take something that was easy to work with (well, after I had figured it out) and make it more difficult. Arrrrgghh!!! S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Nobodys bard Date: 16 Nov 10 - 02:33 PM old dude .... there you go : Nobodys bard but i warn you - I'm not called nobodys bard for nowt! |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Nov 10 - 03:10 PM Well I found my tracks, but if I navigate away from the page, I can't discover how to get back to it, apart from using my browser back button. There must be a link on the page somewhere. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Suegorgeous Date: 17 Nov 10 - 07:16 PM John - where were your tracks? I've just checked and my songs are all missing! are they moved somewhere else, or have I got to upload them all over again?! |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Maryrrf Date: 17 Nov 10 - 08:06 PM My tracks have disappeared from my MySpace page too! What's up???? |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: ragdall Date: 17 Nov 10 - 08:22 PM It looks as if they are trying to cater to the 10 to 16 year old crowd? I can't find anything except "news" about things in which I have no interest. rags |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: open mike Date: 17 Nov 10 - 09:28 PM try looking under the my stuff link above... the effect is interesting if you roll you rmouse over the |___| symbol near the left hand side. i do get tired of all the spam, gossip, "MOVIE STAR" CRAP... the place does not seem to be designed for those who make their own music (except that there now seems to be a feature to sell or buy a music clip) but seems to be made for those who download others' music and add to their playlist.. videos are still there, though...and also my videos uploaded to you tube show up on myspace.. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Fidjit Date: 18 Nov 10 - 03:43 AM Seems to be a bit slow coming up. But it's all there. If all in a different place to where it used to be. Was a pain though. Music was very slow to run. I didn't bother waiting. Chas |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Darowyn Date: 18 Nov 10 - 03:54 AM My songs and video did come up eventually. After a much longer time, I discovered how to turn off the two tracks of somebody else's Rock band which started playing without any by-your-leave. It's not good! Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Suegorgeous Date: 18 Nov 10 - 03:57 AM Well, my songs have reappeared now, as have those of a friend which had also vanished. What an appalling mess they've made of it, it's very ugly and spammy-looking... and they're obviously trying to turn it into MyBook... Well, they're gonna lose people like us - not that they care, probably! |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 18 Nov 10 - 04:33 AM It's all thanks to excessive use of Flash ... and there is a net petition to put it back,,,, I just go there to play a game.... |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Nov 10 - 05:27 AM Well I found that I was looking at my original account, which I tried to modify to add my tracks to, and couldn't. So I opened another account, and left the old one there. So having found my second account, I deleted the first one, [I found out how to do this] Now I have no account at all! So sod them, they can stuff their silly site where the sun don't shine |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Suegorgeous Date: 18 Nov 10 - 05:59 AM I've always found Myspace very useful for me and my songs, and fairly user-friendly on the whole. So I find it very sad and annoying that they've turned it into this garish clumsy mess. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 18 Nov 10 - 07:15 AM Looks like my experiment with Bandcamp is well timed! Robin |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Nov 10 - 07:28 AM Bloody weird I found myself again. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Suegorgeous Date: 18 Nov 10 - 12:57 PM ...or Facespace.... :( |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: JHW Date: 18 Nov 10 - 02:01 PM My tracks hadn't disappeared but the track pics had turned into grey semiquavers. A billion FA-Qs later I emailed them and to my amazement my pics returned. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 18 Nov 10 - 11:27 PM OK - this explains a lot http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/18/hell-freezes-over-as-myspace-fully-surrenders-to-facebook/ |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: RamblinStu Date: 19 Nov 10 - 02:30 AM Thanks Foolestroupe, that does explain everything Shame, I did like the old Myspace, but hey, things move on Stuart Pendrill |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: GUEST,CS Date: 19 Nov 10 - 02:52 AM As a hobbyist I'm tempted to try a Blog a la Jon Boden. I really like the simple linear format. I don't know if the same format would be as useful as MySpace is/was to pro/semi-pro performers wishing to promote their work though? |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Suegorgeous Date: 19 Nov 10 - 04:27 AM I knew it! Myspace is doomed.... CS - and even some of us non-pros.... :) |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: John MacKenzie Date: 19 Nov 10 - 05:10 AM Even before the new pages, I had taken to checking my page once a day, and then logging off, because of the amount of bandwith taken up by all the activity on the MySpace pages. Now it's even worse, it's like animation city! Why MySpace should even try to compete with Facebook is a mystery to me. Surely they have a totally different raison d'etre ? |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: treewind Date: 19 Nov 10 - 05:45 AM Thanks for that link - does indeed explain what's happened, and hardly surprising. I deleted my Facebook account (they still send me emails saying I have updates pending and such crap) and I think I'll delete my MySpace account too. I don't use it enough to keep things up to date anyway, so it isn't much practical use, and as others have mentioned, YouTube and the sound-only equivalents like onmvoice.com are still reasonable ways of getting one's music online, together with a conventional web page which I've always had for the ordinary text-and-pictures stuff. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Suegorgeous Date: 19 Nov 10 - 09:16 PM If you want to protest: Bring back Myspace |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: JohnInKansas Date: 20 Nov 10 - 02:42 AM Those using MySpace may want to look for news on a recent agreement with FaceBook that allows FB registration to be automatically recognized on MySpace. Since I don't use either, I didn't save the notices, but it was mentioned in a couple of the tech newsletters I've seen within the past week or so. A slight handicap for FB users whose purose is to publicize their interests is that everyone who wants to look at anything has to register. Any one not willing to sign over their soul to FB's schitzophrenic vacillations will not see your page. MySpace still - the last time I looked - allows "anonymous search and view" and registration is required only if you want to post something. One of the articles I saw suggested that the "agreement" may portend further merging of things, possibly including a members only policy at MySpace. None of the other postings mentioned this possibility (but none denied it either). Just something else to watch for(?). John |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: JohnInKansas Date: 20 Nov 10 - 02:47 AM OK, so Foolestroupe already linked an article. I didn't recognize it for what it was, since the title resembled other recent releases in my newmails on a slightly different subject. Hell Freezes Over John |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: open mike Date: 20 Nov 10 - 12:15 PM there are 2 threads discussing this... http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=133698&messages=13 |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Girl Friday Date: 20 Nov 10 - 12:19 PM Perhaps one of the elves should associate these two Myspace gripe threads ? New Myspace is awful. |
Subject: RE: Tech: My Space, what happened? From: Tootler Date: 21 Nov 10 - 10:38 AM As I said on the other thread, I have cancelled my MySpace account. I didn't find it exactly user friendly, it was almost impossible to customise - in spite of what they said and the number of tracks you can upload is severely limited. Most of the tracks I had on MySpace are also on You Tube. CS, I like your blog idea - or you could use twitter. Upload to You Tube or other hosting site, then include a link. Like you I am a hobbyist. I write tunes and online hosting sites are one way of getting them out there. |
