Subject: Auction Notice: A lot of good stuff
From: EBarnacle
Date: 16 Nov 10 - 01:22 PM

A friend of mine has decided to quit Folk Music. Her entire library collection is up. It includes quite a few books which are no longer available from both sides of the pond. All of the books will be shipped as soon as they are paid for and are FOB Maine, USA. 10% Mudcut.

She also has a 20 year collection of SingOut! from 1985 through 2004. They are in 2 boxes and are available for $50 plus shipping.

PM me with any comments or questions.

Sure Joe, if I had the funds I'd buy every one. I can guarantee none would be duplicates for me!

You'll have to fight it out with someone else though; I've bid more than I should already. Good luck.

Make the bid "transparent" (like government is required to do)...

There may be a guest too... that will double the bid of you two.

A "good auctioneer" would at least throw the titles into this thread.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

For a valid evaluation, and "fair market price" there is NOTHING in print now... or the past .... that cannot be connected through "ABE Books COM"

There was a question about Oak Publications. Here are the Oak books.

Favorite French Folk Songs
Folk Songs of Peggy Seeger
Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem Songbook
Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger Songbook
Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians (Jean Ritchie)
American Folksong (Woody Guthrie)

She has switched entirely to classical.

ABE did not have some of these, including a couple which did not get listed because I snatched them up myself.

Don't get around here much, these days. What a nice surprise! I'm picturing all of us milling around the auction table @ a getaway with you all. Drop a bid, hope to win, not worth making an enemy over, we'll probably trade/sell/give these to each other over and over again. Or, our kids will.

Bon chance!

Sooo...there is a PUBLIC LISTING outside of MC? WHERE ... your client expects the highest market value?

What are the titles, dates, and publisher....

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

OK ... this will be perhaps the two-thousandth ... multiple personality to MC ... Estonia is working for me.

Garg, this is the only listing available. According to my friend, most of this stuff was put up on eBay and drew no bids. Go figure. I am doing her a favor.

Most of this stuff was published only once so date of publication, etc., is not really necessary. I gave you the information I got. When I receive a legitimate, specific question, I try to find out the answer.

No, it is not multiple personality on my part. This legitimately a posting for a friend of mine.

By the way, please put your secondary postings in a strong enough color to allow it to be easily read. Thanx.

Dear Mr. EBarnacle

I am NOT a member of Mudcat.
I Do NOT have access to the list you posted on the MC auction.

For "world-wide bidding" (and highest price) may I suggest the listing of the publications into THIS thread, with an extension of two weeks. At the moment - you have a VERY SMALL and select audience.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

The WWW "bots" do not have access...nor do I...to your "clients" bookshelf.

Well, Garg, if you want to bid, all you have to do is log in. Otherwise, perhaps it would be better if "Mr. Barnacle" ignored you. After all, it really isn't all that hard to log in - and logging in provides a level of safety that isn't otherwise available.
-Joe-

Janie, I am told it's volumes 1, 2 and 3.

Sorry, Gargoyle. For simplicity, I am keeping it to the auction site. If I have to coordinate on site and off site bidding, I will go crazier than I already am. It would also be unfair to the people who are bidding on the auction site.

The reason, as explained above, for not extending the auction is that I wish to allow people who do bid to receive their books for Christmas. 30 days should be long enough for anyone.

If you have a desire to bid and do not wish to join the 'cat after all these years, let me know what you wish to bid on and I will place the bids for you. My friend is not a member and she is able to view the auction.

There is zero interest in 20 years of "Wringing Writer Prose."

However, ... given the "right book" ... it may yeild 20 times your best offer ...from any ol' Joe. And then again ... they may not be worth the postage.

Post the list. A world wide audeince is available. Over 5,000 "used book sellers" may gild your client's pockets...while five vultures sit on the sidelines.

Your need to sell appears desperate.

Consult, "antique book emporium" AKA "abebooks" for comparison pricing....

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

On checking,it turns out that he is correct. The listing will be corrected and anyone who bid on the incorrect listing can withdraw his or her bid by contacting Joe.

If someone wishes to post the names of the new items I've added to the auction for me, I would appreciate it. I'm beat, there are quite a few.

After consulting with a couple of people, I am thinking of moving the closing date for the stuff I added today to December 15, to match the earlier material.

I will decide by December 1, based on comments on this thread. The general commentary thus far is that, after about 2 weeks, auctions tend to bog down and go no further. Please comment. I will listen and, if appropriate, respond.

Even Mudcat auctions are prone to snipers. People don't bid till the very end.

It makes no difference to me. You (or the owner) might find it easier to deal with different closing dates when it is time to ship out a boatload of parcels, however.

I've put a comment on one of the auctions, but I'll repeat it here.

The auction listings don't appear to have the capacity to add a 'Trace'
In view of the number of items currently on offer, it would help to have this available. Otherwise I have to remember which items I've bid on, and re-check them periodically.

Auctions may become better contested (more cut-throat) if either you could trace the individual items, or, if an automated PM was sent if you get outbid.

Cheers

Nigel

There was one listing misspelled when I entered it. When I went back to correct it, it created a corrected, almost duplicate listing. At my repuest, Joe removed the incorrect listing. It is also possible that the book is simply hard to find because there are so many books up. Which book is it? Good to hear from you Jay.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice - computers and I have, at best, an adversarial relationship.

And EB, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that we can all convene for a chantey sing in NYC on December 17 if the gods smile on us!

PS: She also sent me a copy of the 1 volume Bronson, heh, heh, heh. Happy Chanukah to me.

It has been brought to my attention that the Burl Ives Sea Songs can be gotten for significantly less at some other sites. I have asked Joe to lower the starting price to $8. It is still a rarity.

Thanks for the opportunity to bid on such an extensive collection, I can't wait to figure out which one to read first.

I would prefer checks, but will take PayPal if you are overseas or on a case by case basis. Please be sure include your Mudcat handle so I know what books you have won.

My list is correct too, as are the prices.
If it wasn't for all those other people bidding, my list would have been even longer. Still not sure whether that was a good or a bad thing.
Ah well! like Joe Said, that was a lot of fun.
Maybe I should hold off shipping until January and just hire a Shipping Container :)
JohnB.

Almost forgot, Susan of the DT is correct, a lot of these books are available at other inet locations. They are however at many different booksellers and localities, if you look at the shipping costs you have saved by this method you are still way ahead.
I also think these books have been well looked after.

John, now that you have a substantial songbook collection, I think we should name you an Official Mudcat Song Geek and put you to work posting lyrics.....

It will go along with the other 6 to 10 feet or whatever that is here already. Heck it could have been a good 3 feet more if only!
I have two friends with even bigger collections than mine, just trying to keep up.
A few are for gifts too.

I can hardly believe that we'll again have a little stack of music books of our own! I am grateful to those who have made that possible.

For bidders in foreign countries: Your books will be shipped next week, as both post offices and UPS stores will be crazy between now and Christmas.

I just spoke with Jennifer. Everyone who has purchased an item is in the process of being contacted. Mary Katherine, Jennifer says you may have fallen through the cracks and she will follow up immediately with you.

Thank you all, it has been a fun auction. There will be a few new items next month including at least one REALLY desireable item. Maeve is looking at the dulcimers and, if she decides she wants them, will have preempted the postings on those. She also has arranged for a friend to receive the SingOuts that Jennifer wants to move. Should that fall through, they will be posted on a year by year basis in the auction.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this auction. I think I have replied to everyone. If you have still not sent a payment, you can use PayPal to jlcaven@comcast.net or send a check or money order in US funds to Jennifer Caven, 25 Staples Point Road, Freeport, ME 04032. We're about to get a blizzard (a foot of snow tonight and another foot tomorrow) so shipments may be delayed a day or so. More books will be posted in January, along with two dulcimers and a psaltery. If you want more information about the instruments, please email me at jlcaven@comcast.net.

Best,

Jennifer

Our business is all wrapped except for the mailing. Jennifer said she would do it tomorrow, but I just e-mailed her to tell her there is no hurry. She's in the path of this storm, too.

I picked up my books from Jennifer this morning. I enjoyed meeting her. A heartfelt thank you to Jennifer for selling her books here on Mudcat, to EBarnacle for listing and running so many auctions at once, and to all of my benefactors who have given me hours of delight in these beautiful books.

Maeve
