I've watched the tv show, listened to Kate Rusby on the radio, and sung Sweet Chiming Bells, so I'm hoping that we may be able to organize pub carol sings for next year in Portland, OR. I also found that these great carols have been recorded by Smithsonian/Folkways -
smithsonian recording and booklet
The booklet is free to download!
Thanks to you all here and on Folk Song a Day for all this info.
The stores start their Christmas sales the first week in November, so why not start the pub sings then too?

I'll second what Noreen has said above. The South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire traditions of pub carols are the strongest I've come across, and they have made their carols available in book and recorded form. There's another dozen or so tunes for 'While Shepherds', so you can get lots of singing out of one set of words - including the Ilkley Moor tune (a 'While Shepherds' tune long before the Ilkley Moor song was written). I hope you have lots of fun with it.

Its worth producing a few carol sheets with words if you've got the time and facilities. Most people can get to the end of verse 2 OK but then --.
We do a few do's with carols and inclued Boars head, Ding dong, we wish you a merry, 12 days of Xmas and jingle bells. This suits the non religous amoung us.
Does anyone do wassails in the group?

We were chatting at Morris practice about the gig next Thursday - another side is dancing at a pub we dance at and invited us. This is the pub's Advent gig. So someone said 'we could do some pub carols.'

In deepest Surrey, said by some to be the stockbroker belt, we do have some obvious local sources: http://www.guildfordvox.org.uk/lyrics.htm for the Christmassy bit and half-way down the page at http://www.pilgrimmorrismen.org.uk/diary.php for the half-a-dozen links to their 12th Night song-sheets.

Shepherds to the Ilkley Moor tune is standard, of course, and some of us know Shepherds Rejoice from William Seal in Leicestershire via Lester Simpson. Try saying that fast....

I have seen some individual pub carols mentioned in Mudcat threads and of course many references to pub dates in and around Sheffield.

What would be nice to find would be a collection - or just suggestions for carols we might absorb from elsewhere. Can't find this as such, so I think a new thread may be in order.

Any ideas, please?
