Johnny Cope

Johnny Cope is possibly better known as a song written in 1745 celebrating the defeat of the Government forces under Gen. Sir John Cope by the Jacobite Army of Bonny Prince Charlie at the battle of Prestonpans.

The tune has also been widely used a basis for sets of fiddle variations in Scotland and the North of England and there are several manuscripts with such sets of variations. It has also made its way to Ireland where it is played as a six strain hornpipe.

My own effort, played on Tenor Recorder, is based on a four strain set from a Manuscript from Co. Durham dated about 1850 to which I have added two variations of my own to make a six strain set.

How about a Playford tune?

Here is Westmoreland from the 1686 edition of the Dancing Master.

Played on a wooden flute with a shruti box providing a drone accompaniment.

Wav
"The "wondrous cross" is a lovely song.   I think you do a fine job when you play the recorder as I cannot play a note on one and envy anyone that can play anything on one of them. Just as a gentle suggestion, maybe a little work on your phrasing with the vocals. You drop a bit here and there ok. Sometime it is just simple timing .. I think it could make the songs much stronger. These are just simple suggestions as I am no expert by any means. I appreciate you putting your music out there. Thank you as I have not heard any of these songs before

Dan

"Cleveland Hills and Down Along the Tees"

Yes, thanks for those Tootler. Enjoyed watching the images depicting first the staid dignity of the hills and then the nomadic sporting of the river. Especially nice to see you putting your work celebrating your local landscape into the collective commons. Reminded me what this folk lark is all about.
