Subject: Tech: New BLUE PLATE SPECIALs Series 2
From: bradfordian
Date: 20 Nov 10 - 01:47 PM

Don't know if this has been aired recently. If not read on.

11 years ago, we were discussing what should be on the MUDCAT CDs. 8 years ago the CDs stated appearing -- five in the series; and another, the children's songs was added later.

In the past decade, many catters have joined the fold some of whom may wish to get involved with another such project. Other catters missed an opportunity due to technological restrictions. So time and technology has moved on, as has the membership.

I have no doubt that there may have been many issues to overcome in that first project, and many many hours of behind the scenes of unpaid labour of love. But, hell, it's what we do!

Is it time to consider doing another series of Mudcat CDs? -- I say CDs, but perhaps, in keeping with technological advances ( and keeping production costs to a minimum, we might be thinking of downloadable albums (with perhaps a later option of actually making CDs. Downloadable albums may be good for personal use, but I''m not convinced they make good presents.

However I am thinking of all those who may like to make a contribution to the community who did not do so last time (but not excluding the ones who did!)

Or is it not likely to be economically not worth while?--I don't know how financially beneficial the CD project was. Perhaps someone with a finger on the Blue Plate Special finances could advise if it is worth while having another shot.

Any observations?????

brad

Brad:

The gathering, editing and grouping the tracks was the largest part of the work last time. Once that was done, the tracks could be sold on-line or as a CD entire as the first batch were.

It is hard to believe it's been eight years!!

It might be advantageous to name the collections using ames related to the previous series to make the continuity evident. There are so many fruits and vegetables out there!

If you intend to anchor this effort, which would be highly commendable, let me know if I can help with questions, etc.

If enough interest develops over the next few days, with some more pledges to contribute material (9 so far), I'll run with it. (Did I really say this????) I know there are some who will do it if and when a boot is heading for their backsides, so lets start kicking butt!

If Dick and MichaelR would like to join Amos as "Consultants" (fee neg.) that would be kuel!
I'm aware that there would be loads of admin, managing, delegating (hopefully) and CHASING, but being a busy and retired techy (sort of),

I think it is a timely thing to do. Could be ready for next years stocking fillers! (really????? --nah!)

I've been dabbling with recordings and editing recently, so I'm getting the hang of it.

brad

PS AMOS, how about   APRICOT, CINNAMON, LAVENDER, OLIVE, TANGERINE

I'd be happy to be involved, working on graphics (as before), and contributing content.

However, I must say that continuing the previous series' horticultural concept strikes me as a little unimaginative.

And I second Brad's original query -- how successful was the Blue Plate Special CD series in raising funds for Mudcat? We need to know before we can decide whether it's a good idea to do it again. Dick Greenhaus and/or Max would probably have the answer.

I would be glad to send in a tune or song...
it would be like a benefit concert...where
the musicians donate time and "ticket sales"
go toward a good cause. the previous c.d.
names were:
Orchid, rose, violet, strawberry and plum

red ---
orange---
Yellow---
green---
blue---
indigo--
violet---

hmm...to use the plate concept,
maybe each disc could have the name of a dish..
disc=dish

apetizer, soup, salad, main course, dessert, beverage,

who is Mr. Mike, and is Roy G. Biv gay?
how can someone hold a claim on all the colors of the rainbow?

strawberry, rose, orchid, violet and plum
were the names of our first 5 discs.
and this covers only a small portion of
the color wheel..the reds and the purples

I was just saying that the orange, yellow, green and blue
parts of the spectrum had not been utilized yet as names
for our c.d.'s

these tasty ideas were submitted by Bradford
APRICOT, CINNAMON, LAVENDER, OLIVE, TANGERINE
and i was just adding to the menu...these
all have added fragrance value!

Those are great names, Bradfordian!

I would be happy to add a cut.

As I recall there were several major phases. The first was demanding content, beating the bushes, tracking down reluctant stars, and reminding people relentlessly until they sent in their tapes, disks, microdisks, CDs, or whatever they had.

The second was choosing the inclusions out of all the candidates. This was hard because so many excellent songs were sent in. My policy was that anyone who tool the trouble to send in material should be represented--which is why there were so many CDs in the series.

Then, sorting them into sequence for the five disks and normalizing or optimizing the recordings as best I could with the tools and skills I had, which were somewhat limited.

Anyway, I also made a point of also continuously letting people know where we stood, what the deadlines were.

There was a huge amount of work done by other folks--graphics, and tracking down what was legal to use, and generating the liner notes for each disk. Mostly serving as a clearing house and facilitator for a lot of very bright people.

We might consider contributing material.

There was a long list of threads under the tag "Mudcat CDs" during the development which covered all questions at that time. We took anything the 'Catter wanted to send in as representative of his art, his heart, his preferences in music, or his momentary impulse.

Depending on quantity we expect to sell, it may be more cost effective to have them duplicated or replicated and. 100 duplicated CD-rs in four panel wallets are a little over $3.50 a piece (about $2.30 a piece in simple printed sleeves), and 300 properly replicated ones are 2.62 each, $2 each in sleeves. Doing it on one's own printer always seems cheaper, when when you add the cost of toner, labels, blanks CD-rs, etc., it starts getting pricey. Just a thought.

And Maeve, I'm sure we can find a way to get you recorded. Amongst other things, I'm expecting there will be more than one volume and they won't all be made right away - right?

Dan

"There are so many fruits and vegetables out there!" (Amos)

Yes - and some of us are Mudcatters too!

I think it would be great if the next batch included a lot of 'new talent' -- i.e., artists not on the first batch.    But I'm wondering how flexible the 'quota' of songs is, with each CD holding ~ 20 songs.

Also, as one of the main people involved in putting together liner notes for the first batch of CDs -- retroactively -- I'd like to suggest that people submit full liner note info WITH the submission of their mp3s.   Ideally, this would include songwriter and performer credits, copyright info, and lyrics.    This would greatly cut down on the time involved in putting together the liner notes, among other considerations.

Mp3s? Somehow i missed that - probably no point in going with glass mastering then.

I easily have the quality facility to record someone in mp3 quality portably. Professional CD quality is a different story. Hint hint, for you folks wondering how you're going to get recorded.

Looks like interest has taken off.
Amos, dick greenhaus, & michaelr are all on board.

If we are gonna get this out for next Christmas, better get cracking.

I am now prepared to set this in motion.

Send your material electronically to

barriemathers@ntlworld.com

uncompressed files are preferred eg WAVs (I'll clear my mailbox regularly)

will also take videos and extract the sound.(copies of originals please -- don't send stuff from u-toob)

Any MEMBER can send in more than 1 item, but each should be accompanied by details ie performer (as before, Mudcat names will be used) author (lyrics) composer (tune)

I am happy to take items from existing CDs where ownership is demonstrated.

You need to have copyright, or copyright holders permission, or it can of course be public domain.

I will consult with colleagues from Mudcat regarding content for each CD, and indeed all aspects of this project will be a team effort.

PS. email or PM me for any further queries

bradfordian, do you have any preference as to audio format - e.g., AIFF, mp3, wav, etc?

I'm also wondering if those of you who will be compiling the CDs have any way of removing distortion from audio files. Or is there some affordable software for tweaking audio quality after the fact on audio or video files?

Dan, it would be great if everyone's songs were recorded in professional CD quality, but that might leave out many good songs/performances.   The first set of Blueplate Special CDs contained songs with a wide range of audio quality, but I still find the CDs a treasure because of the songs and performers themselves.

The technology has advanced a lot in the last few years, when it comes to the toys and tools most of us peons have. Maybe it will be feasible to tweak things so, for instance, all the songs on a CD come out at roughly the same volume.

Another question/suggestion:

How about having one CD that is all Christmas-Hanukkah-Solstice-New-Year's (etc.) music? I.e., songs usually done in December.

A lot of "Christmas" or "holiday" songs probably wouldn't be included on a 'regular' mix CD but may still be very good songs. And if we're shooting for the CD(s) to be available for next Christmas, I think a holiday season CD would be nice as one of the options.

WAV files preferred
would prefer to NOT have MP3, MP4, WMA ie compressed files, tho I won't totally exclude them if there is no other choice.

It is possible to clean up recordings in some cases.(but we still can't make a silk purse....) Technological advances have given us some handy tools to tweak issues.

And yes we are also more aware of quality and audio levels (normalisation)

I don't think it would be in our interests to specialise, or theme the CDs. The variety of the previous set was IMHO a great assett to the series.
If it came to choosing between two artists, one of whom was on the first series and one not, then the newcomer would get my vote.

Well how about some of you folks getting together and doing a Mudcat collaboration for the CD?

It could be as simple as a number of people singing one line of a trad song! Then if we could also have a different one for each of the CDs!!!
I'm sure this could be done with the technology we have around us.

Way to go, Bradfordian!! Delighted to see a real project schedule laid out. Good start.

Many of the first series arrived in MP3. Others came in AIFF, some on cassettes which I streamed into SoundStudio. Some came on microdiskettes which I fortunately had a player for and could stream into SoundStudio.

SoundStudio and its PC counterparts have many filters for adjusting sound. I am fond of SoundSoap for cleaning up hums and crackles.

Here's to great start!

mp3 files can be sent by email as they're a reasonable size. Some email clients can't handle WAV files - too large.

Is there an address where a CD containing WAV file(s) could be sent? Or can your mailbox cope with these?

OK, looks like its gonna be easier to handle MP3s in e-mails.
I did a test and sent a 16MB WAV file from Hotmail. Took 5 mins to upload, but I received straight away. I got bags of room in my mailbox - 7GB.
The max size of attachment for hotmail, yahoo & gmail is 25MB, so this may be too small for some songs in WAV format.
Note that also your email provider has a limit of the size it can receive which may smaller, ie my virgin media says 20MB.
So anything over 20MB is gonna be problematical.

Be happy to send out my address by PM for CDs but please note, I am UK based. Do we need a base each side of the pond?

It has been suggested that we also run with a BLUE BOTTLE SPECIAL 2 and a seasonal CD (which is something which might not be done otherwise, and Christmas songs would not be selected for the main CDs anyway)in conjunction with the Blue Plates. I'm happy to receive submissions for these on the basis that while the iron is hot..... I can always delegate those tasks if necessary.

I'm satisfied I can import and decompress MP3s & other compressed files, so when emailing, send compressed files.

Any of you techy guys want to suggest how we can get a collaborative effort going?
One suggestion for a song could be RAGLAN ROAD, but there are hundreds of other songs too!

You can upload audio and video files to sites like MediaFire.com, free, and then send bradfordian the links so he can download them. This works really well for files that are too large for email.

I think the files uploaded to MediaFire can be in AIFF, wav, mp3 or other formats too.

I can dub a second track onto any file I receive, to add a voice or instrument to it.

Anyone can do this if they can listen to one while recording the other, even if they are using cassette equipment. Synchronizing them into a combined file may be a bit of work, though.

Now I need to sort some files out.

Changing the subject,

Uploading in FLAC might be an idea. Lossless compression and file size about 60% that of WAV.

I just did a comparison. Exporting a file from Audacity to 16 bit WAV produced a file of 34MB, the same file in FLAC was 20MB. A significant saving.

I'm using Audacity which can import and export FLAC files, which can then be turned into WAV files. The files are bigger than MP3 but smaller than WAV (so should fit within a 20MB email attachment limit) but the quality is better than MP3. Sounds good to me!

I'm in, though it will have to be MP3 which I can email.

How practicable is the "first come first served" policy? It sounds like the size-limit has already been exeeded, or soon will be - is there pressure on us to rush a submission to you? If so, does that mean not to bother if the quota has been filled? If not, how on earth do you choose? A chronological queue might be the most logical, but does this give the best musical results? (Pull-names-out-of-a-hat would be the most fair, but ditto.) I had wondered about recording something especially for this, but if there's time-pressure I can't.

How will all this work in practice? But it's a brilliant, brilliant idea.

The only quota we have is for 5 albums (max) tho it may well be less depending on the submissions. All material of suitable quality submitted by end March will be considered. Just don't everybody wait until March!!!!

For series 1 (5 CDs) we had 70 contributors and approx 100 songs.

Barbara, you could consider uploading the songs as wav files to www.mediafire.com (no membership required) and PM me the links.

Material is now arriving by e-mail, & by post. Thanks to those on the ball.

Thanks for peoples pledges, I will be following these up!

Barbara,

See my earlier post. If you have Audacity (and it's available as a free download) you can save your song as a FLAC. On the basis of my trial, your 33MB WAV file should save as about 20MB. FLAC is a lossless compression so no data is lost.

Tootler, I do have Audacity but it doesn't have the option to save as a FLAC that I can find. I opened the wav file and tried to save it but the only options were to export it as mp3, ogg vorbis (what is that?) and wav. I looked into mediafire.com and will upload files there, but I would like to know how to save as FLAC in Audacity.

Barbara, only specialist hardware/software can play FLAC files. These files are primarily used to send and receive over the airwaves cos they are compressed -but better compressed (tho not smaller)than MP3s because they (supposedly) dont loose any of the original quality.

So once you receive a Flac file, you decompress it (import) to so that you can then "play" with it. Or if finished, turn it into MP3 or WMA to put onto a portable player or Wav for CDs. I think the main claim of compressed FLAC files is that they are "loseless" whereas MP3s canot claim that feature, and quality may suffer.

Hope this helps

Yes but using compressed formats makes it easier for transferring the data across the Internet. Of course there is then a trade off between quality and file size, especially with lossy compression so there is then the matter of what is an acceptable trade off.

Mediafire.com was very easy and works well to upload wav files. Compression not needed. Just put it out there and bradfordian can download it. Seems to be secure enough: only people to whom you send the link can download the file because searches are not possible and therefore no one can find it except the intended recipient. In fact you can also make it "private" with a password so even the link is more secure.

You can upload files to Sound Cloud: http://soundcloud.com/ and make them downloadable.

They will accept files in any common audio format, mp3, wav, aiff, Flac & Ogg.

There is a limit on how much you can upload but it is defined in playing time not file size. The free version gives you 120 minutes. As long as you make your file downloadable then it can be downloaded in the format it was uploaded.

I've not been poking around the Cafe much lately. I'm glad that I dropped by today and found this thread.

One of my songs, "The Girl With The Shimmy In Her Pants", was included in the first set. I would be delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of this new project as well.

Some of my songs would never have been written had it not been for my time spent here. "Drunk" and "A Dilly Of A Tale", are two examples of songs that came into being due to my postings here. Though, I can't imagine what song or songs that I'd offer from among the selection of songs that I now have available.

I'm in the midst of developing the songs that will fill my next three recordings but I have few recorded as yet. With the deadline for submissions that far off, perhaps I'll be able to offer some of my newest work to this effort.

This is going to sound a little naive, but can someone explain this 'copyright' thing in words of one syllable to me please?

For instance, the stuff I've recorded is from my live 'gigs' and is usually just me singing. My homemade CD's are just giveaways amongst friends and fellow song-lovers.

Do I need to get in touch with the songwriter of a contemporary song for permission?

If so, perhaps I should just send a 'trad' song, but I think I know which song people would prefer...

In simple words.

Suppose I wrote a song that you wish to perform. IF I have released that song to the general public, you can do it--record it--without my permission. HOWEVER, you would `owe` me about $100 if you then released it for sale to the public in a CD run of 1000.

IF I had never released that song you wish to record, you would require written permission from me to do so because I automatically have what`s called first recording rights.

At present, there`s a fellow in Brazil who wants to do a song I released a few years back. He ain`t rich. I told him to go ahead and if he sells a million copies to send me some money. Otherwise, not to worry about fees to me.

It becomes a different animal if there is a recording company involved. The above still applies, BUT, I may have signed a deal whereby the recording--publishing--company owns some of my rights, and therefore you`d have to deal with them, not me.

Hope that`s clear.

Further, the use of the word "copyright" can be confusing because a song we have long considered traditional can be copyrighted, but the copyright applies to the arrangement of the song rather than the song itself. E.g., a version of "Lorena" or "Sally Gardens". The song itself is trad and you are free to perform it. You can record and copyright your recording of it.

In general a song used in the original Mudcat CDs had to be one we could safely identify as traditional, or one you had written, or one you had already published on a CD elsewhere. The last thing we wanted in the project was to run up against some barbarian OCD from Foxx.

Thank you John MacKenzie, I received the CD "HALCYON DAYS" this morning. This is a lovely trad/contempory mix. I'm interested in tracks 9/16/17.

Did you compose the instrumental HALCYON DAYS?

Yes the Halcyon Days instrumental is mine, and can be used FOC for Mudcat purposes, if you wish.

Mr Kennedy sir, Thank you very much for your selection of material which I received this morning, about 6am. Although I'd only retired to bed at about 2am, I was glad to be able to help the articulated truck reverse up my cul-de-sac in order to off load the pallets. Such choice!!!!

I have to declare that your album "Seamus Kennedy Gets On Everybodies Nerves" did seem to strike a chord somewhere deep down in my sub-conscious sleep walking like trance (from pallet no 3). So I'm wondering about the possibility of inflicting -- sorry, gracing the series with "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly" or the even more appealling "Dont stick your finger up your nose" Perhaps I should put it up for public vote!

Fellow 'catters, I beg your attention for a few moments.

I'm getting a feeling that some of you are thinking that this project is more for experinced / semi-pros, or even pros.

This could NOT be further from the truth. The charm and appeal of the first series lay in its grass root level involvement, although there was some input from a couple of professionals.

I would like to reiterate that this is for US the members to partake in a community project, be part of it, oh, and by the way, raise a few bucks for Mudcat -- which after all has costs which are NOT met by member subscriptions.

If you play an instrument, sing in a singaround/house concert/folk club/ in the bathroom, we would like to hear from YOU.

More info higher up the thread.

Loads of impassioned comments in the "end of Folkwaves" thread.

I'm wondering if that passion can be turned to supporting our own community folk project.
Folk music, it's what we do, it's worthy of making use of every opportunity to promote and disseminate. Let's demonstrate what we got, what we can do.

C'mon dudes, get your name down here for a track on the Blue Plate Special 2. Its called being pro-active.

bradfordian

PS Maybe someone might be minded to come up with a "save folkwaves" protest song.

Guest 999, no need to take that phrase as being prescriptive. Of course we do folk, and so much more.... We ARE a very "broard church" here at Mudcat, we DO have an eclectic range of styles among our number. --Someone wanted to do some Jake Thackeray, --but I think there was an issue over copyright.

We are not into rejecting any stuff that comes along on account of style.

The new CDs will be in the vein of the first series, tempered by what you dudes send along!

There are many people who would be delighted to hear your contribution on the CDs.

Being laid up with the dreaded flu these past few days, I got the opportunity to listen to some of the material I got coming in for the BPS2 CDs. Very encouraging to see stuff from catters who were not on BPS1, but also some great stuff from a couple of the "veterans" too! One I've just heard for the first time has really BLOWN ME AWAY!!!! WOW, you guys are in for a real treat when this gets out. Now, just between you and me, you know I can't give too much away at this stage but what I can tell you is, it is beautiful. . I do have to keep the contributors name secret at this time until things get confirmed etc, so no guessing now. Right? But I did have to blow a little volcanic ash off before it would play!

It is lovely to see people dropping by and picking up on this project and I NEED MORE OF YOU to still keep on coming with your contributions as it will give it a broader feel and appeal.
We have members in many countries including Germany and there could be a German song in the pipeline. (We did have a french song on BPS1). On having an international membership,......... HOW ABOUT A BIT MORE INTEREST FROM THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE?
and you 'catters still thinking about it, JUST DO IT!!!!!   remember it IS about US getting together and doing what we do.      DEADLINE       31 MARCH 2011 PM or EMAIL barriemathers@ntlworld.com

We got a new Mudcatters Sampler CD set on the go again and anyone who wants to donate a song/tune can either PM me or declare it publically right here on the thread. A song/tune in the public domain, or your copyright, closes end March, but really you should make that end of Feb -- I know some of you are already working on contributions and I look forward to seeing those drop thru the electronic letterbox in the next few weeks. Songs from CDs & youtube accepted.

It has been an eerily quiet 3 weeks since Christmas. A couple of songs dropped thru my mailbox just enough to prevent me thinking that you had all gone into hibernation. But of course, I know that in reality, you are all busy polishing up those promised contributions--and so close to dispatching them to me!!!!! So I thought I would just give you a gentle nod that time is marching relentlessly on.

Actually, the main thrust of this post is to announce that I have received permission to include a song from BARRY FINN. That is in addition to the LonesomeEJ / David Coffin "SONG FOR BARRY"

I am also in negotiation to include a song from THERESA TOOLEY.

I do hope that this meets with your approval, as these two people have had a significant presence in aspects of our music either side of "the pond"

I have also been trying to encourage some of "the management" to participate in this project, but as of yet, my endeavours have still to bear fruit!!!!! (oh, was that a HINT!!!!)

Anyway, while things are quiet.........

For those wonderful folk who have already sent me songs, I am now sending out requests for the lyrics for those submitted songs, AND for notes/comments for sleeve/liner notes.
Please check your PMs.

For those who are about to send songs thru (as opposed to CDs) it would be appreciated if you could either send the lyrics and notes when you send the song or have them ready if you prefer to wait to see if the song will indeed be used on the CDs

I have 3 CDs which are well on their way to being completed, they all just need a few songs from women of which there seems to be a bit of a dearth ("songs from women"!--you know THAT'S what I meant!) ---and maybe another instrumental. ANY OFFERS???? (before this wall cracks!)

Barrie, I hope to be sending 2 songs from me & 1 from Duane D. We haven't been heard except at the first Get-Away attended by Mudcatters & at Lee Haggerty's memorial (except for an open mike at Chocolate Church in Maine, with Charley Noble, Naemanson, & Kendall!), so it would be fun to be included. One of my two is from the memorial session for Sandy Paton at last spring's NEFFA, hosted by Caroline & Katy Westra. Duane is working on them now. Thanks so much for doing this!
