Just stumbled upon this on the web. This link has a great photo of the instrument, wonderful wav files, and written history. There are less than 200 nykleharpa players in America, but there is a graph that shows how much of an improvement this is. It is a really neat sounding instrument, kind of like a hurdy-gurdy/dulcimer type looking thing. Ah, heck, just go see it and listen! Maybe one of you plays one or will want to?? At any rate enjoy and Skarpi...if you see this, have you ever played one? Really neat. I like it a lot!

Thanks,

kat

Yeah......that's great......Just spent about 10 minutes there..................

I really like the little keys and the rear view mirror is a nice touch, but I had to enlarge the picture to identify the turn signal switch and the emergency flashers...

JESUS KAT----WHERE DO YOU GET THIS STUFF???!!!???!!!

The one saving grace here is at least the website author had the class to identify it correctly as a form of fiddle, as it bears no similarity to any form of true harp or lyre. Once again though, "HARP" sounds so much nicer and god knows we identify everything we like the sound of as a harp. I've said it before, but how many people would buy an "Autozither?" It just sounds too freakin' weird to say it. Sounds like some form of corset attachment.

I think that there are those creative souls out there who feel compelled to "refine" the simplistic beauty of many instruments and more power to them. The autoharp is a wonderful example of the good that may come out of such an inventive process. There are others however.......

But it's one more reason why I luvya Katmyluv!!! Keep us posted on your next find because I DO love instrument history and the many cultural variants, even when they're a "bit" strange.......What was the thing on the tiple thread? As if a tiple isn't strange enough!!!

HEY!!!! I just looked at the picture again and when the tears of laughter cleared from my eyes, I was able to get a better view. Look closely down in the lower left soundbox section..........Isn't that a gas cap? (:+))))

Rog is in his birthday suit? Sounds like a promising evening! Just had to go check back on the tiple thread and after reading your post and messages, and now knowing Rog is nekkid................

Why not share a ronroco filled with ronrico and let nature take it's course. 18 holes if you likOf course anymore the only time I think about playing a second hole is just before I tee off on the first.

Well, 'Spaw, if ya didn't spend so much energy on moving things and running 40 yard dashes, ya might have some left over for those second holes and then some!

I'll tell ya later whether the evening held any truth behind the promise, but he was just getting ready for a shower. We moved a lot of stuff around, cleaning up this weekend, too, so who knows......LOL!

This whole "harp" business may have a plus side. If we can call damn near anything we choose a "Harp" then why not use the name for "cleaning up" all those "No-No" words (that we all use) and give a little beauty to the names at the same time. For instance a man might return from the restroom and say:

"I was out tuning my Schlongarharp."

Or wouldn't it be so much nicer for a woman to hear:

You have a lovely Desiraharp. May I play it a for awhile?"

And why say "ass"----Why not "Flatulharp?"

Just a thought......

You're welcome, Malcolm. Don't mind 'Spaw, he's got this whole Lenny Bruce fixation, stream of consciousness thing going that just can't be stopped sometimes, plus he's a hell of a luthier!

Now, 'Spaw.....tell me you DID read the info at this site which explains why they use the word harp! If you're not careful, those jackalope who were guarding Cleigh may just turn on 'im and take him hostage, 'til you've listened to and read everything the Nykleharpa site has to offer!**BG** Such a purist! And, really quite good a "harping", aren't you?*g*

As to your idea of using harp as a part of an euphemism, let's see....Harp you! Naw.....Your mother wears harpboots! Naw....look at that set of knoharpers...maybe. He's got harps? Tell ya what....I like my niece's idea that she uses around her 3 year old, no naughty "f" word around him, we all just say "Bucket!"

Now.....go listen and learn, you harper you!

What is your problem woman? I DID read it and I already conceded that the website author did his/her duty by saying it was a fiddle and not a harp.....I know, harp and lyra are often subbed for instrument etc...........I READ IT........No Foolin'..............Now let's get down to a bass clef here.......................

Did you and Rog make beautiful music with your "Desiraharp" and was his "Schlongarharp" in tune? No string breakage or anything like that? Or did the sympathetic harmonics of your/his "Flatulharps" ruin the evening? Inquiring minds and all that.............

LMAOWROTF!!!!!!! There was a little fine-tuning neither of us really wanted to invest the energy into, if ya get my drift. Strings intact and all, though.

The harmonics were silent, thankfully! I've often wondered why bedrooms don't come equipped with those exhaust hoses all the garages have nowadays. It would be bliss...just attach it, stuff it out the window and let 'im toot all he wants, I'm just smelling roses!

And...I knew you did the homework...I'se jist pullin' yer legaharp! I do LOVE the Desiraharp and Schlongarharp, clever and pithy!
