I played a one man band from 1982 till '1990. From Soho, Leicester Square, Portobello Road Market, Petticoat Lane Market,Camden Lock,Kingston, Paris, South of France, Switzerland, Italy , Holland,Denmark,Sweden, Belgium, all over Germany,Sydney Australia, etc. Some called me "Crazy Eddy" some "Fast Eddy". I've got some pics on my Myspace and Facebook. To connect go to my home page. www.fasteddysblueband.de                      Go on myspace link and look at "Old busking photos" I knew many of the one man bands who were alive and kicking on the busking road in England and Europe during the years 1970 and 1990.If you need any info ,let me know. Cheers Eddy

Also, John Lowe is probably the most outrageous OMB out there... He actually holds his drum st5ick with his strumming/pickin' hand and can play a drum with it!!! No shit!!!

Okay, John sometimes just get overwhelmed with it all but when he's got it going, it's going...

BTW, he is also the inventor of the Lowebow, a cigar box cross between a fretless geetar and a diddly-bow... I have one of his and can play the hound out of it...

Hey Bobert, I have Ben and Richard in my list, good entries done, very familiar with both, thanks. You're right, they are both excellent. I don't try to say who is best. That's too subjective for me. There are many very different and excellent OMBs out there. However thanks for your comments. Can you send more about your own OMB act? Send to daveharrisonemanband@gmail.com Thanks!

Thanks Jack for your advice concerning photos. I'm pulling my hair out about this. Almost to the point of giving up on getting vintage photos into the book at all. I have lots of modern shots so it makes it that much more important to get the earlier ones too. I'll figure it out, one way or another.

Tongue Tied Twin, yes you're in, but send a photo to the above email and a few basic details, I'll improve my entry. Thanks!

Hey Mark, Glad to see Erik Fingers Ray get a mention. Yes, I have him and he's another favorite, we've shared info and a good entry done.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in, it does help!

But the two best OMBs in the US are Ben Prestage and Richard Johnston... Look 'um up... They are the shits when it comes to OMB... Hey, not that I can't get it goin' but these two guys have set the bar!!!

Google 'um up and see for yourself...

Talk to a publisher. You won't sort all this out on your own, it's insanely complicated. Published photos and unpublished ones in archives and personal collections have completely different rules, for a start.

Are all photos copyrighted? Do copyrights expire ie what about old photos? I know that photos get sold to others ie buy up the copyright. How does one trace the copyrights? I have lots of questions about this whole area. Can't really afford a copyright lawyer, please help, if you know. Thanks!

If you use a photograph or piece of artwork from a book or album sleeve or wherever. Then the copyright is owned by the photographer or artist or the company that might have commissioned the original work. Copying the work without permission or payment is theft.

Not quite a one man band but just as impressive a feat of coordination - a guy who used to busk in Argyle St precinct in Glasgow in the 1990s, playing the uillean pipes along with a dancing marionette hanging off a stick (I think he worked it with a string attached to his foot). Anybody else remember him?

Thanks Jack, I'll check those out. I have a decent piece on Codona and a photo. The clarinet OMB is Arthur Griffiths. I'm not sure whether I have a photo I can use of him. Some of the older photos could be beyond copyright, I'm not an expert about this.

Have you seen this discussion about John Codona from Edinburgh?

http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.music.folk/2008-01/msg00157.html

http://solwaynotes.blogspot.com/2008/01/john-codona-edinburghs-one-man-band.html

I think the book about the Codona family (Scotland's leading family of circus and fairground people) is now out but I can't find a reference to it on the web.

(And can I find that Rodger image? No, but I did discover the Magnum page gives you an extraordinary bunch of pictures if you just type "clarinet" in the search box).

Okay, more sleuthing turns up the fact that Lonesome Gillette is Eric Royer, great Boston area OMB with his Guitarmachine; have good piece on him.
New Zealand John was also known as Little John according to Jimmy Jimmy.
Google search for Chester the OMB just brought me back to mudcat. It's hard finding info on these characters that just have nicknames and busk for a living!!! Oh well, they'll just get mentions and I guess I shouldn't complain as the book is getting enormous!

Wow! This is great, really great! Alanabit, can you contact me at my email and let me know your real name so I can credit you. I'd like to use several of your quotes.

I do have Alan Woodham, he's Woody The OMB, as opposed to Woody's OMB. Jimmy Jimmy gave me a lot of my info about several of the names, as did Slippery Mike. I do mention Phil Free.

Don't know Jim Pizza's real name but what I have about him is: started in late 70's/early 80's, drum on the back, American (?) busks Norway in summer, Australia in winter, featured in Norwegian doc Feel Free, still going best I know. I'd love more on him if this the guy you know alanabit.

Anyway thanks to all responses! Keep em coming!

There is a famous photo by George Rodger, for Magnum, of a man playing a metal clarinet with a drum on his back in London in the 1940s. I presume you could licence that from Magnum.

Starting from photo agencies might give you different leads - any social documentary photographer will have seen the potential of a one-man band, and their archives are pretty well organized.

Big John, of The Bootleg Band, died back in the eighites of a heroin overdose. The bass player in that band, himself a very good OMB, was New Zealand John. A little misunderstanding with the Thailand authorities over the use of recreational substances caused him to spend a prolonged stay in that country. The last I heard of him he had become a disc jockey in Wellington. I have not seen Nick the One Man Band (Nick Cox) for years. The last time was back in the nineties, but he was travelling with his girls (girlfriend and young daughter) in Austria at the time. My guess is that he probably had to come off the road when his daughter reached school age. His timing as a one man band was a bit unusual, but he was a great bloke and a good entertainer.

Hi Joachim - this is a different book about One Man Bands in general by a guy called Dave Harris - see thread start. I was doing one with your late dad and Pat Keene about how we all started out busking and Don's rise to fame (and return to the streets). Pat and I are still going on with it. I'm hoping to see Stewart when he arrives in the UK in December. Any stories about Don would be very welcome... you can mail me at rodwarner@hotmail.com

Pretty Richard retired years ago. He had a daughter with a young Norwegian girl, who left him soon after. He raised the daughter and stayed in Norway, I hear, as a successful artist. When I saw him last, his voice was on its last legs - the same fate which overtook Miller Davidson, who was every bit as good in my book. We lost Miller, who was a personal friend, back in the nineties. I still miss him.
Little Joe died back in the mid eighties, I can't recall when. The first time I met him was in Dusseldorf Altstadt, when he played mandoline in a very loud and very effective duo with Moti. Moti is still around and you can easily locate him via Facebook.
Hermann the German is said to have died in the mid eighties. I knew him, but not well.
Mississippi Mike is one tough son of a gun. He always moans, always says he is going to pack it in, but he is always out there in all weathers giving his best. He plays superb slide guitar - and does not actually come from Mississippi - though his music certainly does. I mean tough. He had a run in with cancer a few years back - and it was the cancer that had to die. I will look back over the list and see if there is anyone else whose paths have crossed with mine. I did not notice Mike from Darmstadt on your list. He was one of the most successful. Even if your book is mainly about one man bands, there should at least be a mention of "The Buskers' Pope" - Phil Free - probably the greatest comedian ever to work the streets.

Thanks. Yeah I've got Mike Whellans, Ray Stubbs, Eddie Martin, Jet Martin, Dollar Bill...the UK blues scene is fairly well in hand, I think...but one never really knows either, so thanks. I have a list (a bit out of date but not too bad) at myspace.com/daveharrisonemanband
In fact I'll go try to update it right now!

Subject: One Man Band Book
From: DHonemanband

I've been working on a one man band book for a year and a half now. It's been going quite well and I have over 700 OMBs being mentioned or written about. I've posted on several relevant threads here and have found quite a few interesting posts and comments relating to the genre. I just thought maybe I'd try starting a thread specific to the genre as it relates to the book and see if I got any new names, interesting stories, info about guys I've been having a hard time finding stuff on etc.

Here are several names I'm short on info on: Kenny Sorensen, Jim Pizza, St Tropez Pete, Uncle Ray, Jim Franklin, Dog Man (UK OMB busks with his singing dog), Caroline Francis, Phil De Glass and Pete McGettigen or Maginigan (spelling?) and Cat Weasel to name but a few.

Does anyone have access to recordings by Joe Barrick, Panhandle Pete, Arthur Griffiths, Albert Bergerault, to name a few?

Any good stories are welcomed about any OMBs.

I desperately need photos of OMBs, especially the vintage ones. I can't just go online and use anything I find, I need permission and photographer credit. I say this because a lot of people say "Just go on google, there are lots there". It's a legal issue. So private photos are best, from people's private collections, whatever.
The main artists I'm concerned with are: Jesse Fuller, Dr Ross, Joe Hill Louis, Drifting Slim, Papa Lightfoot, Juke Boy Bonner, Wilbert Harrison, Duster Bennett, J.D. Short, Blind Joe Hill, Frank Frost, Abner Jay, Hasil Adkins, Arthur Griffiths, Don Partridge, Des Bader, Shaky Jake (British OMB, not American blues guy), Alan Young, mostly earlier guys. However any photos are welcomed and will be credited appropriately.

Okay, I guess I've made my pleas! Please do help, if you can. I hope to finish this in the new year so don't wait. Thanks a lot. I hope to hear from lots of you. Let's face it, we've all seen a one man band or two, right?

My email (for photos) is slimchance@shaw.ca Thanks!
