Heard a song recently. As might be guessed from the title, it goes to the tune of the shanty, Seraphina.

Laughed like hell at the time but can't for the life of me remember what it was about.

I first heard it about 30 years back sung by Jim Mageean.

It starts something like :-

Some drink Whisky, Some drink wine,
I drink Paraffina (paraffina, paraffina)

Jack Edward Ashton,   attended the same school as Keith Marsden, Peel Street Juniors

A man of vivid imagination

He played in the 1920 cup final for Huddersfield Town, but during half time was transfered to their opponents Aston Villa. With no score and time running out , Villa earned a late corner. Jack took it and kicked the ball high in the air giving him enough time to run into the goal area from where he scored with a header to win the game. !

So

Maybe buying the book 'Picking Sooty Blackberries' the songs of Keith Marsden, may come in useful for the GCSE course for which it is the recommended text book forthcoming English lit exams as will be sat by Harrow and Eton schools where Jack distributed prizes in the late thirties.

Thanks for the Jack Ashton background breezy. Out here in the old colonies it's not easy to come by good songs never mind their history

Hi jacko, by my reckoning half your country's population is working in and around St Albans U K while the other half are playing rugby.
