Heard a song recently. As might be guessed from the title, it goes to the tune of the shanty, Seraphina.

Laughed like hell at the time but can't for the life of me remember what it was about.

Help, anyone

Jack

I first heard it about 30 years back sung by Jim Mageean.

It starts something like :-

Some drink Whisky, Some drink wine,
I drink Paraffina (paraffina, paraffina)

Quack!
GtD.

And ends in having to sell his Ford Cortina....

Jim certainly did sing this, and at least one Herga member learnt it from him... I will e-mail them the link to this thread!

That's the one, Geoff. Now can anyone take it further. As I recall it was quite an epic.

If so,I'm still looking for my Sooty Blackberries book to give you the background to Jack Ashton
Have more time later

Hi Tim

Please excuse this inter-rupture , but being in possession of said book I extract this short taster

Jack Edward Ashton,   attended the same school as Keith Marsden, Peel Street Juniors

A man of vivid imagination

He played in the 1920 cup final for Huddersfield Town, but during half time was transfered to their opponents Aston Villa. With no score and time running out , Villa earned a late corner. Jack took it and kicked the ball high in the air giving him enough time to run into the goal area from where he scored with a header to win the game. !

And there's more, much more, then even some more.

So

Maybe buying the book 'Picking Sooty Blackberries' the songs of Keith Marsden, may come in useful for the GCSE course for which it is the recommended text book forthcoming English lit exams as will be sat by Harrow and Eton schools where Jack distributed prizes in the late thirties.

Available from Cockersdale members,

Yes Tim, it's me. That was a grand night at Biddys, thanks to Graham and yourself.

Can't get the damned song out of my mind.

Thanks for the Jack Ashton background breezy. Out here in the old colonies it's not easy to come by good songs never mind their history

Jack

Hi jacko, by my reckoning half your country's population is working in and around St Albans U K while the other half are playing rugby.

The rest are grazing happily awaiting the mint sauce :-]

If I can sing a Marcus Turner song you can make more of an effort.

Contact Graham Pirt on here, see a cocker's thread

Oh btw , Tim

Its not me, got mine from John O'Hagan, after some bugger nicked me 1st one.

It now stays under Lock n Key, which also happens to be the name of my duo.
