Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Girl Friday Date: 05 Dec 10 - 11:57 AM Rob - you poor man - but you have told it like it was. It snowed for 3 whole days in Orpington, the really heavy big flakes all day and night Tuesaday, then the small stuff Wednesday and Thursday. I cancelled Friday Folk, but Crayside qwent ahead as it wasn't nearly so bad. Raffles Bear had to come and dig a path for me to get outyesterday afternoon, by which time a thaw had set in. Lidl's car park though, has ice 3 inches thick. More snow is forecast for Wednesday, but Monday looks like being reasonable. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rob Naylor Date: 05 Dec 10 - 04:57 AM Sorry I didn't make it! I was just psychologically put off going back to the area having spent 20 hours trapped in my car from 0845 Tuesday morning to 0500 Wednesday, most of it around Foots Cray/ Orpington. Was supposed to help my son move stuff from his old flat in Dalston Tuesday, and when I set off the roads didn't look too bad, until I got to the A2 off the M25, which was virtually static. So I came off at the next exit thinking to work my way over to Foots Cray and then on the A224 to pick up the M25 at Orpington, as by that time the radio was saying that Junctions 3 and 2 on the M25 were solid. Big mistake. Virtual gridlock. From being able to see the Foots Cray traffic lights to actually turning left at them took me over 3 hours! The roads weren't that slippery as it was cold. I have a rear wheel drive and I was having no real problems with traction, but people were revving like crazy everywhere and just wheel spinning/ slewing sideways. The only high point was a couple of ladies (mum and daughter) walking the queue between Orpington and Chelsfield at 0100 in the gusting wind and snow, handing out mugs of tea to drivers. Wish I could find out who they were as I still have their mug! |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rafflesbear Date: 04 Dec 10 - 06:59 PM Just back - I was expecting a brilliant evening but that was above expectations. Andy Smythe Trio / Band I would recommend to anyone, plus a superb traditional set from Linda Smith and Alan Austen. Thanks to Dave the guest MC - a wonderful, wonderful evening. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Girl Friday Date: 04 Dec 10 - 08:45 AM The thaw is happening. Car will hopefully be freed up soon. It will be the icy patches that worry me, and I still have a bit of chestiness. We are going to try to do a bit of shopping this afternoon and could drop the raffrle stuff and a c d for Dave's competition into the pub. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rafflesbear Date: 04 Dec 10 - 06:02 AM Full scale thaw today but watch out for the icy patches. See you all tonight |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Girl Friday Date: 03 Dec 10 - 08:41 AM This is all good news. People are digging out their cars outside, and a slow thaw appears to have started. It seems so silly that we were snowed in, and Foots Cray is relatively clear, just a couple of miles down the road. It's a lot lower there, and I live in a high part of Orpington. A snow plough came here late last night, and piled the snow off the roads by the kerbside. The road looks very icy, but with rising temperatures I hope for the best. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rafflesbear Date: 03 Dec 10 - 05:50 AM Temperature forecast for tomorrow is plus 5 degrees. No more snow forecast before then. Our hardy guests have confirmed they are coming (our thanks to all of them) The Seven Stars has hot food available as well as the guest beer The buses are running The Open Mike is waiting for you performers All is set for a brilliant evening - shake off the winter blues, come and enjoy yourselves at Foots Cray!! |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rafflesbear Date: 02 Dec 10 - 02:28 PM Buses still running ok, main roads slushy but traffic moving quite well. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Girl Friday Date: 02 Dec 10 - 01:57 PM Please check the web for travel conditions before you travel by train. There are no trains in or out of Orpington at present, but that could change of course. We'll be keeping you informed of developments. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rafflesbear Date: 01 Dec 10 - 04:34 PM Message in from Barry Targett - The Andy Smythe Trio are definitely coming on Saturday unless conditions get dramatically worse !! Great news - all is right with the world. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Girl Friday Date: 01 Dec 10 - 12:27 PM Well done Mr Bear. We are hoping to make it down , though I tend to err on the side of caution where icy pavements are concerned. I'm very glad that Dave, the M.C. par excellance of Folk Mob is running the evening. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rafflesbear Date: 01 Dec 10 - 12:08 PM I have just been out to the Seven Stars to test the conditions. The bus routes are clear and there were quite a number of buses about, looked like a 'normal' service but the sample wasn't large enough to say with certainty. Pavements needed care but there were places (eg alongside Lidl) where there were clear lengths. The car park was in use although there were a few cars in there that obviously had not moved since before the last snowfall - they could however be residents. There were quite a number of regulars in the Seven Stars. So, on the basis of this alone there appears no reason at the moment to call it off unless the weather deteriorates. On the other hand we have to accept that the guests may have difficulty coming from distance but the open mike should be on whatever. The hot food sounds good as well !! |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Girl Friday Date: 01 Dec 10 - 11:58 AM We have a foot of snow in Orpington. My next door neighbour walked to the high street for some essentials, and kindly got me some stuff. It's at times like this when you appreciate friends, and a well stocked food cupboard! We are grounded until there is a thaw, or the roads clear enough. |
Subject: RE: Andy Smythe Trio in Sidcup, December 4th From: Rafflesbear Date: 01 Dec 10 - 09:38 AM There is a lot of snow around at the moment so we are keeping an eye on the weather, but as it stands this is still on. If the guests were to get snowed in we still have the open mike. |
