Subject: Hello, all you North Easteners!
From: Magic Gillian
Date: 25 Nov 10 - 02:04 AM

Eh up, it's Gillian who used to be in the Wiches of Elswick here, just wanting to let you know that I am running a session at the Alum House pub in South Shields, by the ferry landing on the first Sunday of every month starting from 1pm so you all have time to go to church - tee hee. Next one will be the 5th Dec. All are welcome (no bodhran jokes!) A free pint for playing or singing from the establishment, which doesn't happen too often these days.
Hope you can make it, Lots of love to all of the lovely people I haven't seen for ages. xxx MG

Well it could confuse folks when you say North east. Kendall will take it as New England, people frae Aiberrdeeen will think it's fur thaim, an folks frae Sooth Shields, will thing it takkin' oboot them boonny lads.
It certainly confuses me, all the UK ones, are way south of me.

In NEW England we are usually referred to as living in the Northeast (that's one word) -- of the United States. "Northeast" can cover more states than true "New England" (of which there are several schools of thought -- or it can cover fewer (just Maine and New Hampshire).

Some people (usually those from southern US or western US) throw New York and maybe even Pennsylvania into "Northeast", but that's just WRONG.

Good Luck with your venture Gillian.
It reminds me of my years in South Shields when there used to be a music session on a Sunday dinner time in The Turks Head - just about ten minutes walk from the Alum House (We ran South Tyne Folk and Blues out of the Turks Head for a few years too). If your session is half as vibrant as that one was then you will be onto a winner. Unfortunately the club that I am now involved with also meets on the first Sunday in each month so it is not often that I am in the North East on that particular day; but if I am I'll look forward to it.

All this geographical discussion is very confusing to me. The North East (Note the capitals) was always understood to be the North East of England and was that before America was discovered and before the Union of England and Scotland (Which is only recognised by some as the union of Scottish and Newcastle Breweries!). So - Well done Gillian.

I'll take my tongue out of my cheek now all mudcatters out there, before I'm swamped by abuse!

Gan canny y'aal wherever you may be
