I'm desperate to find a song that will fit the theme of balancing the feminine and masculine sides of our personalities. Anybody have an idea?

Had you considered The Female Drummer ? Or is it too basic for what you're after?

Sounds a bit esoteric for our site!

Jack Sprat could eat no fat,
His wife could eat no lean.
And so between the two of them,
They licked the platter clean.

Best I could do...... definitely balanced

How serious is this event? Could you get away with a funny song that might, possibly, at a str-e-e-e-tch, sorta-kinda-almost be on-topic?

If so, try The I.P.D. (the male equivalent of the I.U.D.) or Mark Graham's I CAN SEE YOUR AURA, AND IT'S UGLY.

If you need to keep it serious...
Do you live in the US? Are you familiar with Rise Up Singing?

If you have a copy, (or if you have a friend who has a copy) check the "Men" section; it has quite a few songs that look like they might well be suitable.

If you don't have access to a copy & don't have time/money to order one (you don't mention how soon you need this song), here is a link to Peter Alsop's website, and another to the lyrics for his song LET THE WOMAN IN YOU COME THROUGH.

Sorry, don't know the tune, but I expect you can prolly purchase it from Amazon or iTunes as a download, or even buy the cassette it is on ("Asleep at the Helm" along with a load of other suitable songs; see below), here .

Here's the "blurb":

CASSETTE - Asleep At The Helm - Fun Gender Songs!
[MS034]        $5.00

INVESTIGATES OUR SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS BY LOOKING AT OURSELVES

Includes:
Asleep At The Helm - a man waking up to his shortcomings
Doin' It For You - male chauvinist explains his behavior
Good Time - the sexual chase, the score, the emptiness of the game
You Make Me Stand In The Corner - male codependent who needs a female fix
Ghosts - the sadness of breaking-up because of missed communications
Let The Woman In You Come Through - exploring our androgyny
When You Ask Me First - a man losing control in the bedroom
The One About The Bird In The Cage - Ruthie Taubb's song about a woman breaking free
The Young Woman Disco - a woman learns options she was never taught
Lists - uninhibited, non-sexist love song

*** most of these songs can be found in digital format on Peter's double CD - SONGS ON SEX & SEXUALITY ***

======

His website seems to have the lyrics for all of his songs, so you can prolly find lyrics to all the songs listed above (and dozens more) pretty easily...

Also in the R.U.S. "Men" section are a 2-3 of suitable songs by Geof Morgan, who is another fellow who writes a fair few songs on this (& similar) subjects. I did a quick Google on him and didn't find anything that looked particularly helpful, but (depending how desperate you are), you might well find something I missed.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

YY

ARTIST: Dar Williams
TITLE: When I Was a Boy
Lyrics and Chords

[Grossly simplified chords - original was in an alternate
tuning with an overabundance of sus2s.]

I won't forget when Peter Pan
Came to my house, took my hand
I said I was a boy, I'm glad he didn't check
I learned to fly, I learned to fight
I lived a whole life in one night
We saved each other's lives out on the pirate's deck

/ G - / G/B - / C - G/B D - /

And I remember that night
When I'm leaving a late night with some friends
And I hear somebody tell me it's not safe
Someone should help me
I need to find a nice man to walk me home

/ C - / G/B - C - / G/B - / D - / / (G)

When I was a boy, I scared the pants off of my mom
Climbed what I could climb upon
And I don't know how I survived
I guess I knew the tricks that all boys knew
And you can walk me home, but I was a boy, too

/ G - G/B - / C - G/B D - / C - G/B - /
    / C - G/B D - / C - G/B - D - - - / G - G/B - C - G/B D - /

I was a kid that you would like
Just a small boy on her bike
Riding topless, yeah, I never cared who saw
My neighbor come outside to say
"Get your shirt," I said "No way
It's the last time I'm not breaking any law"

And now I'm in a clothing store
And the sign says, "Less is More"
More that's tight means more to see
More for them, not more for me
That can't help me climb a tree in ten seconds flat

When I was a boy, see that picture, that was me
Grass-stained shirt and dusty knees
And I know things have gotta change
They got pills to sell, they've got implants to put in
They've got implants to remove
But I am not forgetting
That I was a boy too

And like the woods where I would creep
It's a secret I can keep
Except when I'm tired, except when I'm being caught off guard
I've had a lonesome awful day
The conversation finds its way
To catching fire-flies out in the backyard

And I tell the man I'm with
About the other life I lived
And I say now you're top gun
I have lost and you have won
And he says, "Oh no, no, can't you see

When I was a girl, my mom and I we always talked
And I picked flowers everywhere that I walked
And I could always cry, now even when I'm alone I seldom do
And I have lost some kindness
But I was a girl too
And you were just like me, and I was just like you"
