For some reason there are breaks in long URLs and Clickys are not working.

If you're the one making them, and it's here, un-click "Automatic line breaks".

Hmmmm. We've had a problem with that in personal messages for a long time, and I've wondered why they work in the forum. This Dan & Dan "Requiem for a Wardrobe" Video at YouTube may be a good test.....

Seems to work for me. Sawzaw, can you point us to an example?

A fixed line break in a text editor (as opposed to HTML!) is a sequence of two bytes (or a single byte, depending on the OS) whose visible consequence is that the line is always broken there, no matter how much space is left. Such a line break is typically produced by pressing the return button while typing. Normally, you can delete it by setting the cursor to the end of the first part and press "Delete", or to the beginning of the second part and press "Backspace". This ought to work in the text entry field of your browser. Inspect the preview to check your success.

An URL will be rendered invalid if a line break is inserted, as you observed. The clicky text, however, can consist of as many lines as you wish.

There shouldn't be a problem if the URL for the link is copied from the address bar of your browser with the site open, and pasted directly into the link you're making.

With "tabbed windows" in all current browsers, you should be able to open the site you want to link to in a separate tab, copy the URL, go back to the tab where you want to make the link and paste into the link. Attempting to "type in" a long URL is an invitation to failure, and should NEVER be needed if you can copy and paste. And if you can't open what you want to link to, why post a link?

In IE at least, a very long URL may not display fully, but the "first click" on the address bar should highlight the entire URL, and Ctl-C should copy the complete URL even if you can't see it all.

A common cause of link failure here is from the apparently random tendency of the "mudcat link maker" to attach a "mudcat.org" bit on the front of what you insert. (At least it did several years ago, the last time I tried to use it.)

Attempting to guess what problem someone is having is useless without a sample of what was done that didn't work.

If you post one of your broken links here, any of a number of people can look at the page code to see what the problem is. Without a sample, we're all just farting in a stiff wind. (A tiny little noise, but no noticeable result.)

AND ... Mr. John .... Sawzawl and Joe...

Have you tried the "PREVIEW" before posting below?

Well, I've never had a problem with links in the Forum....I can do them in my sleep. BUT the problem does seem to occur consistently in Personal Messages, and I'm sure I'm making the links correctly. Somehow, Mudcat puts a <br> line break in the middle of long links, thereby making them non-functional.

At How to prevent long URL wrapping in most email apps it is implied that this is a "well known problem" for Mac browsers/email apps, but I haven't seen it in my Windows ones. The note mentions an extraneous inserted space at line wraps. This was a built-in "feature" of very old word processors, and may have remained in macish applications. (Recent Microsoft Word versions could be set to "emulate Wordstar line breaks" but I never figured out why anyone would want to.)

I didn't see any other even potentially applicable comments in the first few Google hits on my query.

Note that I just typed the link:

<a href="http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070112124954101">How to prevent long URL wrapping in most email apps</a>

While some find that the "Make a link" function works okay, I've found that I have to check it, especially when it doesn't work in Preview. In order to check it it's necessary to know what the link code is supposed to look like, and if I know what the code is supposed to be it's easier to type it than to mess with another "gimmick" that I haven't really decoded so that I understand how it works.

But others may stroke differently-handed or some such.

John

My previous post should have included that I put the link into a PM to Joe, and it worked fine in the PM Preview. It was so pretty I didn't bother to send the PM.

There is an add-on for Firefox that allows you to right click on a tab and see "Copy Tab Url" which is then easily pasted into the Mudcat Link Maker... now I have so many add-ons, I could be in error.... I think it is "Tab Mix Plus"... which provides a lot of cute Tab control stuff anyway and is recommended.
