I just checked on line. Minstrelsy of Maine is available on line at reasonable prices, all less than $100.

There is also a collection [single volume] called the Minstrelsy of Maine by Eckstrom [and, I believe, Hyde] which is also unobtaineum.

I have a set of the Flanders books as mentioned above by Steve G.

Very good they are too. One day I may even find time to sing one or two of them!!

I think the 4 vol set you are thinking of is
Helen Hartness Flanders
Ancient Ballads Traditionally Sung in New England.
University of Pennsylvania Press 1960
Tristram P Coffin and Bruno Nettl were involved.

Child's own ESPB mentioned above is mainly those collected in England and Scotland.

can anyone identify the book I had as a teenager. Four (5?) volume set of Child Ballads collected in N America (Canada I think, and I think Edith Fowke the collator, though I know Helen Creighton did similar work) Title and publisher?
