Dick,
Do you really mean 'throughout' the UK, or do you mean places where a strong carolling tradition occurs. Your title suggests just Sheffield? The west Sheffield/Pennine tradition is probably the most famous but there are others. And in the past there have been other traditions carried out by different agegroups and different classes of people.

Ian Russell came to Australia last year, presented a paper on 'English Carolling in Australia and the USA' at the 2017 Australian folklore conference) & a couple of sessions at the National Folk Festival as well as at least one folk club (mine!)

His son lives here & is a Morris dancer & involved in Carol sessions here in Sydney.

That's a great site, but the list of dates won't print, because part of the list is obscured by that annoying message to Log In or Join Facebook. The list won't respond to highlighting or cut & paste either.

However, there's a good printer-friendly list at http://www.localcarols.org.uk/sings.php - although i'm not sure whether all the details are consistent with the list on the Facebook page.

I have fond memories of singing carols in the pub one Christmas Eve in Groombridge, Sussex between closing time and the church service at midnight.
It was one of those purely by chance things which make a deep impression.
My family still live in Barnsley and my Dad worked at Foxes steel works in Sheffield, but I moved away long ago now. The tradition of carolling seems to have come along with me.

Carols in August was my idea originally and I am really pleased that so many people have gained an insight into the tremendous work done by Ian Russell in respect of the carol singing tradition.

There is also now a Carol Singing at Easter in Sheffield.

We (the duchess and I) have always felt that local traditions are just that and should not be interfered with by incomers and especially "folkies".

Have always enjoyed playing and singing in the "Carols in August" workshops at Sidmouth and Whitby Folk Weeks, taken by Ian Russell (previously at Aberdeen University's Elphinstone Institute, now retired). Very uplifting experience, albeit not quite the same as singing in a pub at Christmas!

There are a number of pubs in Sheffield which have "traditional carols".

The best known ones are probably the Royal Hotel Dungworth and the Blue Ball at Worrall - both of which sing Sunday lunchtime. 12 noon - 2.00 pm with organ accompaniment.

The Traveller's Rest at Oughtibridge sing Saturday night, piano accompaniment.

The Black Bull at Ecclesfield sing Thursday night - unaccompanied singing led by a "striker" who chooses and pitches the carol.

For anyone determined to brave the weather - as well as the links above you may find this helpful.

http://www.yorkshire-folk-arts.com/info/carols.html

Can I respectfully draw your attention to the bit about seating the more elderly members of the local community.

Mine is the first seat after the organ and fireplace @ Dungworth on the left as you look at the window.

They were featured on Songs of praise last night with Kate Rusby talking about them.

You'd probably catch it on BBC iPlayer. It was in the latter half of the programme

Hi
Last Christmas there was a radio programme on Radio 4 about the tradition in Yorkshire, specifically Sheffield, of carols being sung in pubs. The tradition came from church congregations being told to leave because of being rowdy, or something on those lines. The only pub I can remember the presenter mentioning is the Royal pub. Does anyone have any details on where to go? I'm sure there's lots of pubs named 'Royal'!

Ta,
Greg
