Subject: RE: Lazybones? From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Aug 99 - 05:03 PM Darn. I still can't beat three minutes on response time. And on this one, I had to use my edit button and go back and fix my typographical errors. Wolfgang and Alison have tied my three-minute record for a response with a (useful) clickable link - and they didn't make mistakes. I guess the incomparable Joe Offer is no longer.... -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lazybones? From: Jeri Date: 31 Aug 99 - 06:00 PM Joe, I think you've provided a higher number of links, plus you can fix other people's boo-boos. I guess the three-minute record is sort of like your own personal sound barrier! |

Subject: RE: Lazybones? From: Sourdough Date: 31 Aug 99 - 07:16 PM Animaterra and Joe Offer: By an odd coincidence, I am watching Hoagy Carmichael on AMC playing the role of Smoke in "Young Man WIth A Horn". The story originally was a retelling of the Bix Beiderbecke story. The real Bix was Hoagy's best friend in his younger years before he died at a far too young age. I always loved this movie, I read the book when I was maybe twelve and saw the movie a year or two later. I went out and bought the soundtrack (Doris Day and Harry James) and will argue that it is by far the best thing either of them ever did. I modeled myself as a fifteen year old on Hoagy Carmichael. (I guess that must have been pretty hilarious fifteen year old to watch.) The funny thing was that when I got a chance to spend several months with him, I never mentioned it. It never once came ot my mind, but I did have the chance to talk to him about several of his songs. Your mentioning Johnny Mercer reminded me of a story Hoagy told about about another lyicist. Someone mentioned to Mrs. Mitchell Parrish that Hoagy Carmichael had written 'Stardust' She answered icily, "He did not. My husband wrote 'Stardust', Carmichael just wrote "Dah dah dah dee dee dah dee dah dee dah..." I think he really loved that story. Sourdough |

Subject: RE: Lazybones? From: Escamillo Date: 01 Sep 99 - 01:15 AM I've got a CD some 3 years ago, with 20 songs by Paul Robeson, including Lazy Bones. Its name is Ol'Man River and its catalog number is REMEMBER series RMB 75024. Joe Offer brought to me the lyrics that I was not able to fully decript (thanks again). If you are in desperate need of this and don't get the CD, I can do for you a non-commercial non-profit first- aid life-or-death COPY and mail it to you. Best regards - Andres Magre escamillo@ciudad.com.ar |

Subject: RE: Lazybones? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 01 Sep 99 - 01:05 PM Thanks for the link, Joe! I did a forum search but it came up with nothing. This is a great song, and I can do without a recording (I used to have the Leon Redbone version). I'm going to teach it to my third graders, I think! Allison |
