The Correct Expression is:

"I Matched the man behind the bar for the jukebox!"
[or barmaid, which ever the case might be]

The practice was the same for cafes and restaurants with
jukeboxes.

[at least it was in my home town in the late 40s & early 50s]

the proprietors got back all the quarters they lost and half of
the ones the customers lost.

The coins usually had a 'DAB' of fingernail polish on them
[or some other means of identifying them] and when the jukebox serviceman came to ROB the coin collection box, he divided the
remaining LOOT...

Some jukeboxes had remote controls, and some jukeboxes would play 'management funded' requests. Asking for a request was not unusual, depending on management policy.

Also, apart from being a good line in a song, such concepts as 'management control' of the jukebox have occurred in other songs. Eg. 'I asked the man to turn the jukebox way down low'.

I seem to remember a very good duet version - think it was Dean Martin and maybe Sammy Davis Junior.

According to The BMI Repertoire, the legal title is LITTLE OLE WINEDRINKER ME and the authors are Dick Jennings and Hank Mills.

I don't know where Sam Garrett fits in.

In various recordings, the spelling varies, i.e. OLE/OLD/OL' and WINEDRINKER/WINE DRINKER.

It has been recorded by Dave Dudley, Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, Sleepy LaBeef, The Lurkers (a British punk band), Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum, Mel Tillis, and others.

It's a coin flip gambling game - he flips and you try to match it - heads/ heads or tails/ tails. match, you win, don't match, he wins. Bartenders used to occasionally play it with customers. In this case, loser pays for the jukebox.

Not a lyric request as such as I know the words but a question on what they mean! In 'Little old wine drinker, Me', both the original Robert Mitchum and the more popular Dean Martin versions they sing 'I matched the man behind the bar for the jukebox...'. I had always though before it was asked the man... Which still didn't make perfect sense but made a lot more to me!

What does 'matched the man' mean here?

For some alternative chords, here's the way I play it (same melody, slightly different phrasing, a country-swing feel):

In E, The key Dean Martin started it out in (the song went up a tone for the second verse)

When playing the E chord, vamp on and off the E6th (0221200) for a nice feel. With the A chord, do the same with an A6th (002222).

At the end of the middle line in the chorus (after Tennessee) you might like to run the chords on each beat back down to the E for the next line: B A G#m F#m E

You might want to throw a C#m chord in on the 5th line above, on the word "make".

Yep. Dino did a cool version of this too. Back in that late 60s period when he was doing a lot of country covers, like "Houston", "King of the Road", "Welcome To My World" and "My Shoes Keep Walkin' Back To You". I still think DM could sing circles around Sinatra.

I've never heard the Robert Mitchum version but would like to. I always thought he was a pretty good singer too. (Even though he DID NOT sing the theme song to "River of No Return" like a lot of people think--they even claimed that on an A&E Biography of Robert Mitchum. That was Tennesee Ernie Ford).

(p.s. Mitchum was even cooler than Dean Martin, IMO)
