Subject: Your best Christmas song: What is it? From: mauvepink Date: 12 Dec 10 - 08:34 AM What is your favourite folk song at this time of year? One you sing, one you listen to, one you love... whichever FRom folkish roots I listen to "Fairytale in New York" (The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl) throughout the year but it does have special meanings to this time. I also like hearing Mark Dowding singing "Christmas 1914" (by Mike Harding) I have lots of other genres of songs I love too. What are yours? ... and Merry Christmas one and all while I write this :-) mp |
Subject: RE: Your best Christmas song: What is it? From: Tim Chesterton Date: 12 Dec 10 - 10:01 AM It varies every year, but this year I think it's the Falcon Carol/Corpus Christi Carol/Down in Yon Forest family of traditional songs. I'm also doing 'Past Three O'Clock' and 'The Holly and the Ivy' quite a bit. And in other genres, I find this one quite apropos. |

Subject: RE: Your best Christmas song: What is it? From: GUEST,Jane Ann Liston Date: 12 Dec 10 - 01:12 PM 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer'. Can't remember who performed it, though I noticed the American Tea Party were using the tune for one of their ditties. I also like Bill Barclay's 'Twelve Days of Christmas' - that's the one which goes from 'a Wee Heavy and a half pint' to 'Twelve Alkaseltzers'. |

Subject: RE: Your best Christmas song: What is it? From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 12 Dec 10 - 08:27 PM Well, currently, I've just found a recording of Chris Woods accapella setting of Robert Sutherlands poem "The Burning Babe" Just astonishing. Don't think it's ever been released sadly. Well worth asking him to sing it, if you ever go to one of his gigs though. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE BURNING BABE (Robert Southwell) From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 12 Dec 10 - 08:34 PM That should read "Robert Southwell" sorry. FROM St. Peter's Complaint, 1595 THE BURNING BABE. By Robert Southwell As I in hoary winter's night stood shivering in the snow, Surprised I was with sudden heat which made my heart to glow ; And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near, A pretty babe all burning bright did in the air appear ; Who, scorchëd with excessive heat, such floods of tears did shed As though his floods should quench his flames which with his tears were fed. Alas, quoth he, but newly born in fiery heats I fry, Yet none approach to warm their hearts or feel my fire but I ! My faultless breast the furnace is, the fuel wounding thorns, Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke, the ashes shame and scorns ; The fuel justice layeth on, and mercy blows the coals, The metal in this furnace wrought are men's defilëd souls, For which, as now on fire I am to work them to their good, So will I melt into a bath to wash them in my blood. With this he vanished out of sight and swiftly shrunk away, And straight I callëd unto mind that it was Christmas day. |
Subject: RE: Your best Christmas song: What is it? From: Dan Schatz Date: 12 Dec 10 - 09:28 PM For traditional songs it's probably "Leaping and Dancing," an Iberian carol, and for modern it's a tossup between John McCurcheon's "Christmas in the Trenches," which everyone knows, and Magpie's "No Room for You at the Inn," which not everyone knows, but they should. AMAZINGLY good song. Dan |

Subject: Lyr Add: ME AND SANTA, WE'VE GOT AN UNDERSTANDIN' From: reggie miles Date: 14 Dec 10 - 02:03 AM ME AND SANTA, WE'VE GOT AN UNDERSTANDIN' by Reggie Miles © 2008 Me and Santa we've got an understandin' While he's workin' in his toy shop, all year long I'll be hangin' round here, just a singin' this song Can havin' this much fun really be so wrong? Yep, me and Santa we've got an understandin' As he packs up his sleigh, full of all sorts of toys For all those good little girls and boys I'll be strummin' my guitar 'n' makin' some noise Cuz me and Santa we've got an understandin' Me and Santa we've got an understandin' Santa understands I'm too busy to lend a hand Each year as Christmas time draws near He and the elves will have to fill the toy shelves themselves Besides, I think I'm allergic to reindeer Then on Christmas Eve, late at night When Santa and his reindeer take to the sky in flight I'll be safe on the ground, hopin' everything goes alright Cuz me and Santa we've got an understandin' And while he's surfing the clouds on his midnight ride With my warm cup of cocoa I'll stay inside And sit by the fire and rock and glide Cuz me and Santa we've got an understandin' Me and Santa we've got an understandin' Santa understands I'm too busy to lend a hand Each year as Christmas time draws near He knows I'm all thumbs when it comes to tyin' ribbon bows And besides, I think that I'm allergic to reindeer (Ah-choo!) While he's out there freezin' off his big behind Slippin' on every icy roof line I'll be chuggin' mugs of eggnog and feelin' real fine Cuz me and Santa we've got an understandin' When he's slidin' along on the snow and ice Makin' his list and checkin' it twice I'll be tryin' to remember if I was more naughty or nice Cuz me and Santa we've got an understandin' Me and Santa we've got an understandin' Santa understands that makin' sleigh ride flight plans Makes me weak in the knees I'm no good with heights and untanglin' Christmas lights And reindeer make me sneeze (Ahchoo!) And as he streaks through the heavens, his cheeks all rosy red I'll be nestled all toasty tucked away in my bed With visions of sugar plum fairies dancin' round my head Cuz me and Santa we've got an understandin' As he's stuffin' his big belly down all those chimney flues And scarfin' up his milk and cookie dues I'll be pickin' and singin' these ol' Yuletide blues Cuz me and Santa we've got an understandin' Me and Santa we've got an understandin' |

Subject: RE: Your best Christmas song: What is it? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 14 Dec 10 - 03:39 AM Fairytale in New York" by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is always going to be my all time favourite I never tire of it unlike many of the others. Jethro Tull's Christmas song is another that I never tire of so much. Harry Belafonte's Mary's Boy Child still makes me cry and Nina and Frederick's 'Little Donkey.' |
Subject: RE: Your best Christmas song: What is it? From: Phil Edwards Date: 14 Dec 10 - 04:02 AM Another vote for the Boar's Head Carol. Jon Boden's A Folk Song A Day blog has featured some magnificent carols over the last few days; today's (as I write) is the Holly and the Ivy. I like to sing Shepherds Arise if I get the chance, and A Maid That Is Makeles (although I change the last word to 'matchless', as that's what it means). And the Moving On Song, although it's as much as I can do to get through the 'seasonal' verse* without choking up. It's a good season for religious slumming - indulging my inner believer! *The winter sky was hung with stars And one shone brighter than the rest... |
