Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 Dec 10 - 10:41 AM Great, though abbreviated session. I'll post a set list when I get home from work (as well as a list of attendees). Did see some other old friends we haven't seen in awhile when they came to cheer on their grandchildren in the youth band event upstairs. Mike and Diane Dibble, visiting their daughter from England, who came to the Friday session, were able to get back to yesterday's singaround -- after watching THEIR grandchild perform upstairs. Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bupkes Date: 18 Dec 10 - 03:05 PM So that was me as "Guest" earlier; I guess I wasn't logged in when I groused. Don't mean to hide behind anonymity. The Press Room often doesn't treat its regular singers, who come there almost ever week for Friday sessions and once a month for shanty sessions, as if they cared for us. When it's good, it's great, and the individual wait staff treat us really well. But often it's too noisy to hear anyone and the bands warm up upstairs too early, cutting into our regular time. Here's a link to that wonderful thread about the Dec. Shanty Session@the PressRoom that looked like such a good one. People are busier this year with other shows and places to sing. I'll head over soon, in a good mood, and looking forward to singing later. Marty |
Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Dec 10 - 12:10 PM Don't blame you, Charley -- you've got quite a hike for an abbreviated session and your loyalty the rest of the year is to be commended. Have a happy Christmas and we'll see you in January! Linn |
Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: GUEST Date: 18 Dec 10 - 10:36 AM Geez, sorry to hear about the 'yoot' band interference! No sense showing up until 4:30 or 5 then, or I'll just be grousing about how little respect the Press Room management shows us regulars, when they book conflicts like this! And I was just getting inspired from perusing the notes from the December '07 session, before my time here but what a good time it sounded! Barry Finn's inimitable descriptions are gems of colorful comment & good-natured goading. Charlie's good list of the songs & singers have me wide-eyed with envy & nostalgia. Well, all the more time to think up what to sing. See you ... later! |
Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: KathyW Date: 18 Dec 10 - 12:16 AM We too will be having a shanty sing in Chicago tomorrow, and around the same time of day. Too bad we can't all join in together, I'll be thinking of you guys. |
Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: SINSULL Date: 17 Dec 10 - 10:26 PM My big yellow dog on loan is snoring away on the futon. I will be keeping to home tomorrow. Enjoy, guys! Mary |
Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Dec 10 - 09:06 PM Oh lord! And I do remember that they went well past 5 pm last year. I'm thinking that I'd rather do Christmas cards or maybe even set up the tree, or maybe even shop for presents, much as I'd love to be supportive. Will it be safe to come back in January? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: curmudgeon Date: 17 Dec 10 - 11:58 AM Interference alert!!! Got this notice this AM, with apologies "... this Sat, PMAC Youth bands will be playing upstairs until 4:30 -5pm..again sorry about the late notice" We survived this last year and will do so tomorrow. If I recall correctly, we may be able to get some songs in as the bands are setting up. See you tomorrow - Tom |

Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Dec 10 - 08:22 AM Nice to hear from you again, Uncle Jacque. Come to think of it, where I live in Richmond is almost as far to the Press Room as where you live in Monmouth. Good thing I enjoy singing to myself in the van! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Dec.Shanty+Session@The Press Room-NH From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 13 Dec 10 - 08:50 PM Ahoy all! It's been a while eh? Was just in the cat to dig up some lyrics and thought Id check in. If we didn't make the press room from Yarmouth we probably ain't gonna make it from up here in Monmouth (about half way between Lewiston & Augusta) where me relocated about 5 years ago. Love it up here, but there ain't much goin' on in the way of folk or sea music that I have been able to determine yet. Have been kinda lazy with the music and letting it slip, but between being asked to do a Civil War period music gig for the local Historical society this fall and play a piece at a friend's funeral in August I had to dust off a couple of instruments - including the voice - and remembered how much I missed it. Recently been digging out my collection of 19th century music and going through it, and investigating some Maine shape note singers. Sounds like a few keels have been dragging over the bar down there - hope everybody is on the mend. How's ol' Kendall doing these days? Miss you all, and wish the most abundant blessings of the season to you and your Beloved. Strike the bell one time for me, won't ya? |
