Intrestin Sean, still think your holding on to the possibility of SC/FC. I think throwing in fake evidence is dodgy but they all do it.

We visited the Church of St Nicholas in Turkey earlier this year, Intrestin for sure. batted along for a thousand odd years as an Orthodox St of no particular standing until Czar Nicholas visited and kicked all sorts off. Throw in some present giving from holland and that red coat from Coca Cola and Turkey is forgotten (! get that?)

Putting Out for Santa (there must be better term for this) is simply to give kids another level of evidence for his visit than presents. As kids we would leave out cake and glass of sherry which, come morning, would be an empty glass and crumbs on the plate. There was always that moment of hushed reverence and wonderment to think that Santa had actually been.

Here's something though, can anybody recall being traumatised or otherwise feeling let down upon discovering that Santa didn't, in fact, exist? I never did, and even now might play with notions of Father Xmas and other such folklore which provides a rather absurd counterpoint to the religious stuff. People still bang on about the real meaning of Xmas (as WAV did recently) but what is more real - Santa Claus or Jesus Christ? Personally I can live quite happily with both but I don't think anyone was ever put to death for not believing in Father Xmas.

I don't know how accurate THIS ARTICLE IS, but it does give some "folklore" about the traditions from which it may have stemmed.

In the memory gained in my long life (my experience of folklore, if you will), I have ONE meaning assigned to the words "puts out", and it doesn't have to do with the charitable donation of snacks to a midnight gift-bringer!

"Charitable", yes, possibly. But not calorific.

I know for a fact that Santa doesn't drink when he's working. And he never gets tired of milk and cookies. He has a special DNA makeup that makes him able to consume large quantities of them. So skim milk is not necessary.

When I was little I used to leave out a glass of sherry a mince pie a Quality Street chocolate, some nuts and a carrot for the reindeer. One Christmas morning I howled the place down because everything else was gone but mean Santa hadn't picked up the carrot for Rudolf. Shame on him!

Yes, a mince pie and a glass of sherry for Father Christmas, and a carrot for his reindeer (principally Rudolf). My African husband half believes it's all true, especially when he sees all the things are consumed by morning.

I do. I put out salami, cheese and French bread -- or sometimes lasagne -- and (always) a glass of red wine. I figure Santa is probably pretty sick of cookies by the time he hits California.
