Subject: Music for song The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Jan in Oz Date: 01 Sep 99 - 12:40 AM I have the lyrics to the song The Tinkerman's Daughter but I don't know how the melody goes. I heard someone sing it at an Irish session once in Sydney and really liked it. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to how I could find the music for it? |
Subject: RE: Music for song The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Charlie Baum Date: 01 Sep 99 - 01:15 AM Rick Lee recorded it--twice. One version is on his album "Natick" and a second is on his album "There's Talk about a Fence." Both albums are on the Waterbug label (www.waterbug.com). The second version has a more complete story. The disturbing news I must present to you is that each version uses a different tune. But if you get both of Rick Lee's CD's, you'll have two tunes for the Tinkerman's Daughter. When he and Bob Zentz were in Washington, DC earlier in August doing a concert for the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, Rick put together an interesting hybrid--singing the first version, which has an abbreviated story but a tune that I find more interesting, and then segueing into the second version with its different tune, but picking up where the first version's story left off. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Music for song The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Barbara Date: 01 Sep 99 - 04:13 AM I've a transcription of the longer song's tune. (As sung by Rick Lee on Talk about a Fence). Do you want that one? Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Music for song The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Meg Date: 01 Sep 99 - 05:50 PM THE TINKERMAN'S DAUGHTER is included on Niamh Parson's album "Loosely Connected", which available from Green Linnet. The liner notes list the composer as M. McConnell and the publisher as Elm Grove Music. As I understand it, this is a modern song written in a traditional format. I only know of this one tune for it which is quite haunting. I hope this information is of help. Best, Meg |

Subject: RE: Music for song The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Jan Date: 13 Sep 99 - 12:47 AM Thank very much to everyone who replied. Sorry it's taken so long for me to get back but I've been sick since I posted the thread and have only just got back to work today. Thanks to Charlie, Meg and Bill for the info re recordings - I'll try to get as many as possible. That's interesting about the two tunes, Charlie - I wonder which one it is that I heard. Also intersting that it's a modern song - I got the impression it was a real oldie - thanks Meg. And Bill and Allison, what does it mean when it says "Shop - Houston/Voices"? Does it mean you have/work in a music shop? Yes Barbara, I'd LOVE to have that transcription of the longer song's tune, whenever you get a chance. Blessings to you too! And thank you Alison for your version. It's very tantalising cos I'm still a novice at this computer/internet stuff and it'll take me a while to get it sorted out. It's so exciting to be able to do this, isn't it? Just to put a question out there and find a bunch of people from so many different, far away places who know about it and share your interest - what a buzz! Lovely to meet you all. Jan |

Great CD, BTW. I particularly like "The Rose of Saigon." Very powerful, & done in flawless taste & voice. Really something Cheers, BK |

Subject: Tune Add: THE TINKERMAN'S DAUGHTER From: Barbara Date: 19 Sep 99 - 03:48 AM Here's the tune for the long version; tho a friend tells me that the end of each line is 5/4 (one beat more). This is past the ability of the program to transcribe, I believe. That is to say, the first line is "When rooks ripped down at eventide" and the word 'eventide' is held for one extra count. Clear as mud? Then buy the CD. Blessings, Barbara MIDI file: tnkrmd1.mid Timebase: 240 TimeSig: 4/4 24 8 This program is worth the effort of learning it. Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Jack Campin Date: 31 Jan 11 - 08:18 PM I think this may be something like what the MidiText98 garble actually meant: X:1 T:The Red Headed Anne M:4/4 Q:1/4=100 K:F A|A2B2 A3G |F2A,2 C3C|D2E2 F2ED|C3B, B,3 B|A3B B3G |F2A,2 C3C|D3D E2F2|GE3 F3 c|A2B2 c2B2|G2E2 F3A|A2B2 c2B2|B3B G3 B|A2B2 c2B2|G2F2 D3C|A3A B3G |F2E2 F3|] Not a tune I recognize - sounds like a hymn. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Barbara Date: 31 Jan 11 - 09:06 PM Jack, the clever little translation device that I used at the time failed to recognize the difference between the keys of C and F which resulted in a very odd melody. If you would like a midi or the dots, PM me, and I'll ship it off to you. The version I have is the long one with words by Sigerson Clifford and tune by Mike Dennehy. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Tinkerman's Daughter From: Silas Date: 01 Feb 11 - 01:12 PM Is this 'The Red Headed Anne' song? If it is, Ian Bruce does a cracking job of it. |
