I have often wondered about finding if The BBC were open to releasing local archive material. Back in the early '80s BBC Radio Sheffield recorded most of the concerts at Stainsby Folk Festival (or accessed the recording if a private firm did it, my memory is dodgy, I just recall taking shop with a man playing with a Revox B77 similar to one I had) and this included a wonderful set by Diz, followed by him and Johnny Silvo playing together.

Does anyone know of a recording made, probably early 1963 with Diz, John Barton, Mick Waldrun, Malcolm Pool and possibly a violinist - Hot Club of London. Any info appreciated.

I have come across some information that Diz made a recording, probably early 1963 with John Barton, Mick Waldrun - recording made at the Morden Studios (changed to RG Jones) Does anyone have knowledge of these recordings.

He used to introduce the Battle of Raglafart, which was Trafalgar spelt backwards.

Oh how the left one swings, those foolish things.....

Interesting that Rick says Battle of Trafalgar, as I don't remember Diz doing this. I do however, remember him doing the Battle of Hastings, many times, each time as funny as the last. He really was a master ofthe monologue.
I look forward to being able to buy a copy of the CD.

This would be great,and you could definately sell me a copy.

During the late 60's we booked Diz at many of the clubs I was involved in running in the Greater London area and I saw him up to 10 times a year over a few years. Despite the fact his songs and jokes hardly changed at all over this period I still found his performances amazingly entertaining. Sadly my failing memory prevents me from remembering all his songs but Bloody Orkney,Chastity Belt and The Battle of Hastings spring to mind. Also,when he had drunk slightly more than the he normally did
( and were talking big numbers now ) he could be persuaded to do a very rude version of These Foolish Things. Unfortunately it,s unlikely that would be included on any forthcoming C D

I, like many other people, cant think of Diz without smilling with pleasure, and with a recording I could sit grinning for hours, which is a great legecy for Diz to leave us with

I was holding this back until we had something completed, but no matter. We are all very excited about this.

Derek Sarjeant put Rick Norcross in touch with me again after 40 odd years, and it was great to reminisce about the old Surbiton days.

Several of us had been discussing this at Diz's funeral - that there was plenty of jazz stuff around but precious little of his folk act.

So, hopefully, this will see the light of day again in 2011, and show what a comic genius the man was, as well as being the great jazz guitarist.

Can't wait!

I recently received the following news fron Rick Norcross and it made me wonder if anyone else has something similar hidden away.
One of the other projects I am working on right now will be of interest to you. Back in 1967 and 1968, I owned a coffeehouse in Tampa, Florida and in February of 1968, Diz came over to Florida and played in my club over a period of a little over a month. I had a tape recorder next to the stage and I have a trunk full of recordings I made from the stage, including four tapes of Disley playing his "folk" material. An old friend from my 1965 England days, Graham Bradshaw, owns Roots Records over there and he is interested in releasing a Diz Disley CD that I am producing for release. I have about 90 minutes of very amusing and wonderful Disley songs including the "Battle of Trafalgar" recitation. I have spent maybe 10 hours reviewing the material over the past couple of weeks, transferring the songs from analogue tape format to digital for the mastering process and hope to get a finished product together during the next three or four weeks. It has been kind of spooky spending that much time with Disley again after 42 years as he is talking to me and we are introducing each other back and forth during the shows. I remember clearly the shows and it is a lot of fun "reliving" the experience once again. I'll attach some photos from the shows that we will use for the CD cover. There are many many recordings of Diz doing his jazz material but very few of his comedy/folk show and Graham is pretty excited about getting this out to folks who remember Diz. Ironic, huh?
