Subject: Tech: Long Threads Soaking Up Data Allowance From: ChrisJBrady Date: 16 Dec 10 - 11:13 AM I mainly use a 3 mobile dongle for my broadband connection. I have a 5GB monthly allowance. It serves me well even on trains. However there is one irritation with Mudcat especially when viewing long threads. Every time someone appends a post to a long thread, and I try and view this, Mudcat insists on downloading all of the previous posts too. This has reached ridiculous proportions with the "Licensing consultation announced!" thread which now runs to 830+ posts all of which appear to get downloaded whenever I want read the latest addition. This continual downloading of entire threads each and every time I visit them is soaking up my data allowance. CJB. P.S. I would hate to try and visit the "BS: The Mother of all BS threads" which has 38,800+ posts. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Long Threads Soaking Up Data Allowance From: maeve Date: 16 Dec 10 - 11:23 AM CJB- From one of several earlier threads pondering this issue: " Click on the linked "Messages" numbers to view the thread split into pages (click "d" for chronologically descending)." Works a treat, even on my earlier, painfully slow, connection. Maeve |
Subject: RE: Tech: Long Threads Soaking Up Data Allowance From: DMcG Date: 16 Dec 10 - 11:23 AM Next to the titles is a column headed 'Messages'. When this gets to 50 (I think) , it becomes a link, with a 'd' next to it. These allow you to look at the thread as a set of pages, only downloading at most 50 at a time. Of course, if an individual post is huge, it could still take up a fair amount of your allowance. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Long Threads Soaking Up Data Allowance From: Arthur_itus Date: 16 Dec 10 - 11:33 AM The obvious answer is not to open large threads whilst you only pay for 5gb a month download. I pay the money and have a 100gb download at a decent ISP for my PC. I am very careful on my mobile and use wifi when I am at home to downlaod apps etc to it. That way, they do not form part of the mobile download. I have 15 gb per month on the mobile. However I don't go onto mudcat with my mobile. You can't have it all. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Long Threads Soaking Up Data Allowance From: Little Robyn Date: 16 Dec 10 - 01:59 PM As DMcG has said, look for the number that comes after the name of the thread. At the moment this one reads 4 but it will change after I submit this message. When it gets annoyingly high, it will have a * and a little d beside it. Just click the d and you'll see the last one first and only a portion of the whole thread. It's much easier to follow the big threads that way. Robyn |
