Kelly's Mountain is a song from Cape Breton. I can't remember who wrote it, but it is definitely about Kelly's Mountain just outside of Sydney on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia in Canada.

I've loaned out my Cape Breton Songbook, so I can't look up the lyrics for you right now.

Got the words, as I thought, the words were Lillian Crewe Walsh, who wrote GHOST OF BRAS D'OR and other songs and was adapted by Charlie MacKinnon.

(THE LEGEND OF) KELLY'S MOUNTAIN

Kelly was an Irishman, there is no doubt of that.
His mother's name was Bridget. his father's name was Pat.
Now Kelly came from Ireland then was lured back home again.
He left us Kelly's Mountain to perpetuate the name.

CHORUS: Oh, that green and lofty mountain by the waters of Bras d'Or
Has stood for many, many years and will stand for many more.
It was the home of Kelly and beside its waters blue,
Because he was so lonely, Kelly made his Irish brew.

One day the wily Devil climbed to the mountain top.
Said he to Mr. Kelly, "I would like a little drop."
"And begorra, sir you'll get it!" Kelly opened wide the door.
He dropped the poor old Devil in the waters of Bras d'Or. CHORUS

Kelly dearly loved the Highlands but he couldn't live alone,
For the breezes used to whisper, "Kelly, boy, you must come home."
The breezes kept a-callin', kept a-callin' night and day,
Till from the lofty mountain they lured him far away. CHORUS

Now the government is building a causeway o'er Bras d'Or.
The top of Kelly's Mountain will make a splendid floor.
The rock and gravel are so good and very handy too.
They are blasting down the mountain where old Kelly made his brew. CHORUS

Try the second album by J.P. Cormier a Cape Breton singer-songwriter (on the Borealis label) who writes in his tradition. There is a reference to Kelly's Mountain in a song on the album "If I could only fly" (I think that's the title).

Skarpi, the McGinty guys are a great group!

Coincidentally, I met a young couple who were tourists in Halifax who were from Iceland!

Yes, JP wrote a wonderful song and that "I'll fly..." is definitely part of the chorus.

There are LOTS of songs about the Nova Scoti, Cape Breton region. Actually all over the Maritime region and Newfoundland as well.

Anything in particular you are interested in, Skarpi?

Song For the Mira is by Allister MacGillvary. It was a big pop hit for Anne Murray, and is widely known. Have you checked the Mudcat bank for the lyrics? Sometimes might appear as Out on the Mira.

The JP Cormier song is actually titled "Kelly's Mountain". It's sort of a Cape Breton bluegrass variant of "El Paso" (Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, I met a girl then I got shot and died").

It gets a great audience response, especially when JP does it--he plays the most incredible flatpicking solo in the original recorded version. He has also recorded an arrangement of it that starts real slow and hymn-like and gets faster n faster n faster; bit of a showoff really--all the tempo and instrument changes distract from the song, which is very strong on its own merits.

Found this site while browsing
to find out if anyone can give
me the any info on when and of
which Kelly the mountain was named.
I have many ancestors in the Cape
Breton area but have never been able
to trace this info.

Well the Kelly in the song is a fictional character, I believe. He lived alone and returned to Ireland according to the song, so probably left no descendants here. At sometime there must have been a real Kelly though.
