Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 13 Sep 99 - 11:43 AM The majority of the accompaniment for Patrick Spencer is comprised of two descending bass runs. They're both really quite simple. The first is from the C note on the 5th string and runs down to the G note on the 6th string. The bass run is: C plus two down strums (2,3) remember it's in waltz time, B (2,3), A (2,3), G (2,3) The second run starts on the G note (3rd string open) and comes down F(2,3),E(2,3), D(2,3). The key to making these runs sound smooth is what chords you're strumming on the "2,3". So, back to the first run: C (strum C chord during the "2,3". B (strum Em), A (strum Am), G..I use an Am7 (index finger on 2nd string, 1st fret. middle finger on 4th string, 2nd fret, and ring finger on 6th string, 3rd fret.) Second Run plus chords: G (just strum top 3 strings open), F (same thing), E (ditto), D (yup, same again)

When I asked him to do that AND make the print REALLY large, I never thought it would expand the booklet to a VERY substantial 39 pages! The booklet with the Borealis album is also quite extensive, and I had the choice of either going with a couple of pages of pictures of everyone involved, or bigger print and chords. I chose somewhat bigger print (I can read it without the specs) and the pics with a short blurb. Figured since most folks are computerised now I could post the chords on my web-site - which I'm trying to do now. Rick |

Like "Lifeline", "This one's the dreamer" has a nice mix of music, w/ vocal & instrumental all very well-done. I loved "Catspaw's Rag" already. Others that struck my fancy, 1st time through, were "Fa Sol La," "Sing w/ the Angels," (I'm humming that one!), & "When We Gather Once More." Tell him I'm sure glad he recorded "Sing With the Angels!" I'm gonna try to slip that one into the Paton songbag as quickly as I can. Ask him to send me the chords he uses (Borealis didn't put the chords into the booklet as Folk-Legacy did with "Lifeline"). Just kidding. (see Cheap guitar thread) I erroniously told a couple of people that Borealis Records didn't have an 800 number. Of course they do..it's an "877" number. Their website is up near the top of this thread. Tony, thanks for the nice words about the CD. And Sandy and Caroline thank you so much for your support in the U.S. Without you guys I'd still be playing the Royal Hotel in Kapuskasing Ontario, or doing the half-time show at the Chuck-Wagon races in Elk's Crotch Alberta! Here's the correct info: Mike Angelo painted God, Curly Boy Stubbs took the picture of the guitar and played the "St. Louis Tickle" on it, and L. D. Vinci made the ham sandwiches. C. F. Vinci guy is some kind of painter. With a bit of luck he could go places". Then I thought about that C.F. Martin guy, and figured he could use a plug to help sell some of those 0-18 guitars. Well when neither one was lookin, I asked Mudcatter Paul Mills (album designer, hot picker, engineer, and ham sandwich maker) to grab one of those guitars and stick it in God's hand. I figured after buggin' Him with a million questions all these years, He'd understand. After all, even though I'm still pretty confused about religions in general, I DO sing a lot of Gospel songs! Rick performed a number of the songs from the new CD at his recent concert in Washington, DC, for the Folklore Society, and I can tell you this is going to be one heckuva recording.
