I have just got the lyrics and worked out the chords for 'Whenever you're lonesome, just telephone me' which I will use for our uke club but I always like to give credit to a song's writer(s) and I am not having much luck finding who they were. Any ideas?

The song was played in the New Orleans jazz era around 1920s

Albums of Sweet Emma and Paquette et al. (New Orleans Reunion) credit 'traditional'.

The album "New Orleans 1922" credits Max Kortlander and Wendling.
Max Kortlander, a pianist and composer who made many piano rolls, recorded "Whenever You're Lonesome, Just Telephone Me" in 1922.

Haven't seen the George Lewis re-issue.

Tulane University Library has the sheet music, described thus:

WHENEVER YOU'RE LONESOME : (JUST TELEPHONE ME) : Fox-Trot
by Pete Wendling & Max Kortlander; scored by Lee Terry.
New York: Edw. B. Marks Music Co., c1922.

Anyone willing to post these lyrics? I have the Sweet Emma version, but there is an unclear section... nowhere to be found on the internet as far as I can see.

Terry

The lyrics are generally as follows. Emma Barrett alters the wording slightly from verse to verse:

If ever you're lonesome, just telephone me.
Whenever you're by your ownsome and want company.
If blues overtake you, I'll never forsake you.
You know your heart will be waiting for you.
Now this world may divide us from 'Frisco to Maine.
But I'd walk a million miles to see your sweet smile again.
Your kisses and your laughter are worth running after.
If ever you get lonesome, telephone me.

Hope that helps!

I'm just like a bird
that loves the red red rose
just to wake up one morn
and find out the rose is gone

(need rest)
