The ancient seafaring song "Heart of Oak" has a couple more verses than that reflected on the old DT. Please would someone share the other verses?

I just did a search, a quick one grant you, but including sites of the Sea Scouts and the Royal Navy - and no one shows more verses then listed in the DT. Just the two verses and the chorus.

This is Heart of Oak, by David Garrick - published 1759, tune by Dr. William Boyce, correct?

Correct MMario. It's in Garrick's play Harlequin's Invasion'. See C. M. Simpson's The British Broadside Ballad and Its Music for that and other early publications of song and tune.

There are 5 (five) stanzas in William Chappell's "Popular Music of the Olden Time", p. 715 or so, the first = #1 in the DT; where Burl Ives got the 2nd I know not--it sounds somewhat American to me (i.e. sung by a descendant). The others in Chappell are:

We ne'er see our foes but we wish them to stay;
They never see us but they wish us away:
If they run, why, we follow, and run them ashore,
For, if they won't fight us, we cannot do more.
[Cho.]

They swear they'll invade us, these terrible foes;
They frighten our women, our children and beaus;
But, should their flat bottoms in darkness get o'er,
Still Britons they'll find to receive them on shore.
[Cho.]

We'll still make them fear, and we'll still make them flee,
And drum 'em on shore, as we've drubb'd 'em at sea:

John Townley started singing the song at the South St. Seaport and we added it to our second album for Folkways, called "Heart Of Oak."

When I was a kid I learned the chorus:
Heart of oak are our ships, jolly tars are our men, etc.

But printed versions including the DT, and some recordings, have:
Heart of oak are our ships, heart of oak are our men…

Anyone know where or how this changed?

This Bodleian Broadside of the song ... The Island of Britain .... Printed in 1803 and sung to the tune "Hearts of Oak" has the Heart of oak are our ships, heart of oak are our men chorus.

I'm sure there will be other versions as well as this was a very popular tune

Can anyone tell me how and where to get hold of a CD that has Heart of Oak on it as my very dear friend (ex Royal Navy) has passed away and his wife would like it played at his funeral.
