It's the fact that Brittany is so good that keeps me searching for other places and other old music. It clearly exists but seems hard to track down

fell by accident into the traditional music festival of Brittany last year, middle of September at Gourin. Great weekend with real beer on hand pumps!

I get the impression theres something afoot over there, but I guess its like their film and drama world - the language means that they ain't looking outside the country. That is to say it imposes isolation, but it adds strength.

Rather like the German film industry produced the genius Rainer Werner Fassbender - because it was German language and not really looking for a stateside release.

Does anybody over there know the work of a guitarist called Chris Lancry. I first heard his work accompanying a documentary film late at night on TV. I e-mailed him, but i haven't heard much of him since.

Thanks John, that's just what I was looking for. The existence of this kind of festival suggests a 'Folk Scene' of some size and sophistication. Does anyone else know of other similar events or ways of finding out about smaaller local events?

Thanks to JHW for the link to the French Trad magazine. My French is basically non-existant. But I will find a way arond that.

Might I suggest you get hold of a copy of this years, "Folk Music Journal" Somehow. A subscription to EFDSS would do the job.

In it you will find at the back (page 157)a rather excellently written review of a 10 CD set on French music. "Anthologie des musiques traditionelles" From all areas of France and beyond.

I imagine THERE is. But my trouble with the French is they have a different word for so many things it is hard for me to understand THEIR songs.

Consider the word French. Notice it has an invisible "T" in it's spelling but it is hinted at as it is pronounced. Which leads me to wonder why we don't spell pants as pance. The "T" is visible but silent. And don't get me started on soldier and the invisible "G".

Puzzling, n'cest pas?

There is a Putamayo CD "Acoustic France" and another "Paris Cafe`" that seem to indicate some sort of a scene.
There is also a Putamayo radio hours that highlights different venues arouond the world and according to Dan Storpher and Rosalie Howard (owners of Putamayo series) there is a thriving acoustic scene in Paris as well as a thriving World Music scene:
Again, I am relying on secondary scources but many of the West African/ Conglese Rumba performers: Amadou Y Mariam, Papa Wemba, Ayo and Koffi Otimude are well received in France.
Perhaps someone living in France or has recently visited can verify this

A question I have asked in other ways but ................

Is their a French Folk / Traditional / Old Music 'scene', what ever that means?

I know a bit about Brittany and have been to a number of events and enjoyed them.

Do other areas of France have Folk Clubs, Folk Nights, Sessions, Concerts,Festivals long or short, music in bars, etc.

If so how does one find it?
