Dual Layer or Double sided?
All four possible combinations of (SL or DL) and (SS or DS) exist, apparently.

Instructions with some Dual Layer DVDs that I picked up say that you have to turn the disk over to burn the second layer.

Do you have to turn the disk over in the middle to play both layers? (And if you don't, how come the second layer doesn't play backwards?)

If you do have to flip the disk, why would a dual layer CD be an improvement over just burning two CDs?

(Obviously I could try one of my DVDs out, but for today I'm pretty lazy - and I don't quite have 9GB of data ready to burn at the moment.)

I would never convert to a lossy format, the ipod generation are clearly oblivious to the fact that what they listen to on their ipods is a universe away from CD quality.

I would add... it's bad enough trying to find one CD player that will cope with all the current CD formats...!!

Even some of the latest models don't handle MP3s, but there is a recent Teac model which even has USB and iPod interfaces (even controls the iPod via the remote - neat touch). I can't recall the model, but will check when I'm back in work in the morning, as we've already sold a couple.

Hybrid SACD is a sort of dual-layer with a CD layer and a SACD layer which is DVD density.

As for the original question: the capacity of DVD was needed for video, for which there is a huge market and therefore reason for investing in development, whereas there was no commercial incentive to develop a two layer CD that would be incompatible with single layer CD players and hot have sufficient extra capacity to be useful.

CD capacity is 650MB (data) and 750MB (audio)
Dual CD would be 1.3GB / 1.5GB
DVD is 4.7GB (basic 12cm single side single layer)

Yes but they would be good for burning a 2 hour set. Are their CD players capable of reading FLAC files? That could be a solution,

Simply because there is no need. Had DVD-burning technology been a lot more expensive, I'm sure dual layer CDs would have turned up. With the price breaks where they are its cheaper to go to a single layer DVD.
