Subject: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,Eoin O'Buadhaigh Date: 03 Jan 11 - 11:42 AM I have been searching for the words to 'Easter Snow' it's to the air collected by Seamus Ennis, I hope someone can direct me to them. Many thanks. Eoin |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,Eoin O'Buadhaigh Date: 03 Jan 11 - 11:52 AM Sorry, I should have added, not the Christy Moore version. The first lines of the first verse are: In the twilight of the morning as I roved out upon the dew, With my morning cloak around me, intending all of my flocks to view. Thanks Eoin |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,^&* Date: 03 Jan 11 - 12:03 PM There's a set from Brigid/Paddy Tunney in THIS THREAD with a link to the Ballad Index entry. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 03 Jan 11 - 12:40 PM Another version from Bridget Tunney (with three more verses than the one in the other thread) appears in Peter Kennedy's Folksongs of Britain and Ireland. Song 128, p304 The air given with it doesn't really matches Ennis', which he got from Johnny Doherty, without words. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,Eoin O'Buadhaigh Date: 03 Jan 11 - 02:49 PM Guest,^&* (wow, that is some handle)That was a perfect link! Thank you very much, that song has been haunting me for ages. It's like a weight of my shoulders getting the words, now I can learn it! Actually, Easter Snow is a name given to the blossom of the Black-thorn, that is why Seamus Ennis called his house after it. (so I am told) I know of a poem called 'Easter Snow' and it tells of the wife of the poet having died lies beneath the Easter Snow (meaning the blossom covering her grave. Thanks again. Eoin |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 03 Jan 11 - 03:04 PM Well, there are different explanations for the title but the one most accepted is the one that it refers to Diséart Nuadhain, St. Nuadha's Hermitage, in Roscommon. Ennis named his mobile home after it because of his fondness for the air. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,^&* Date: 03 Jan 11 - 03:09 PM Eastersnow, Co. Roscommon Should probably be "knowe" as in "The maid of the Sweet Brown ..."! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 03 Jan 11 - 03:36 PM If I recall correctly Johnny Doherty had a woman in mind for the air, Esther Snow, not sure any of it really matters, they're good stories though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req 'Easter Snow' From: GUEST,^&* Date: 03 Jan 11 - 04:37 PM Esther Snow? Her father was probably Alfred D.! |
