This was a nonsense song my grandfather used to sing back in the 1950s. Does anyone know its "pedigree"?
Oh, it was a lovely September morn
In November, last July.
The sun was shining brightly
And the moon was in the sky.
It was evening, and the golden sun
Was rising in the West.
The little fishies in the trees
Were snuggled in their nests.
Oh, the air was clear and balmy
And the sky was all aglow;
The barefoot boy with shoes on
Was shoveling off the snow.
The organ grinder pealed potatoes,
Lard was rendered by the choir,
Then the sexton rang the dishrag:
Someone set the Church on Fire.
"Holy smoke!" the preacher shouted;
In the rush he lost his hair.
Now his head will be like heaven:
There shall be no parting there.
