Here's Bill Wagman's blurb:

Hello,

Dan Milner and Bob Conroy will be performing a house concert in the Davis in September.

Hosted by Bill Wagman
Friday, September 10 at 8:00pm $10.00
1350 Monarch Lane
Davis Ca. 95616

wjwagman@ucdavis.edu

Dan grew up singing Irish songs at home. In the early '70s, he started singing shanties at South Street Seaport in New York and, shortly afterwards, became active at The Irish Arts Center in NYC. In the mid '70s, he formed a group called The Flying Cloud with Paddy Reynolds, a Sligo-style fiddler from Co. Longford, who later recorded with Andy McGann and Paul Brady, and with Brian Brooks who went on to play with The House Band. After a hiatus of several years he started singing and fishing again a couple of years ago and finished up work with Lou Killen, Mick Moloney, The Irish Tradition and some NYC friends on his CD of Irish sea songs. Folk-Legacy put it out late last year.
Dan will be joined by his singing partner Bob Conroy. Bob is a multi-talented instrumentalist and singer specializing in Irish-American folk song and music of the sea who has been performing music in and around the New York area for the last 25 years.

I saw Dan at the Nenagh Singers Circle a couple of weeks ago, and can confirm that he certainly can sing. Check out his CD of Irish Sea Shanties, which is in my disc-tray as I write.

Bob's playing was on the breath-taking side too.

Say, Dan, only six days later on Sept 18th I'll be singing in Tacoma as a finalist in a sea shantey songwriting contest. I wish you could spare the time to come north!

Margarita, wishing hopefully

Hi Joe!

Thank you for being so crassly commercial. Very kind of you, sir.

We look forward to meeting you and your Sacramento Singers' Circle friends. Perhaps we could structure the evening so that everybody gets to sing a song or we could talk about songs and singing.

Want to start a little earlier? Your call. Just let me know.

All the best, Dan Milner

Well, Dan, I've already advertised the concert as beginning at 7:30, so maybe we'd better leave it at that. I'll put the word out that people are welcome for conversation and socializing beginning at 7 PM. We do mostly group singing in Sacto, and don't have many who'd be interested in singing on their own.

Well, Dan had his historic first concert of his Northern California tour last - can anybody give us a review? If you missed that one, he's singing on the square-rigger Balclutha at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park (click) tonight (Saturday), and at my house in Fair Oaks in the Sacramento area tomorrow (Sunday, Sept 12, 1999, 7:30 PM). Well, Dan Milner and Bob Conroy put on one heck of a good concert. Our audience was small, but enthusiastic. We sang up a storm. They really know their stuff, and they brought us a wide variety of interesting songs. They're also very nice people, and we really enjoyed having them visit.
Thank you very much, Dan and Bob. It was a real pleasure.

Hi way out there. If there's some one who could post a picture (RiGGy???) of the Hawaiian Chieftain doing this beach run thing I'd be very much in your debt for life. She was rigged by a now past on friend of mine & musicain/singer, George Herbert & seeing as how he outlived Stan, he maybe the last shantyman. She was also owner/built by Lahiana Wielding, that's Drake Thomas, another friend, who also helped spearhead the restoration of the Brig Carthaginian & a great singer & guitar player out in Maui. It sounds as if Dan & Bob we're in their usuall great form so send them back east now you've had enough already. I saw that we'll be seeing Dan at the DC getaway maybe we'll be seeing Liam's sister in law too, eh? Wouldn't mind one of the Johnson Girl's helping out with the shanties, eh, eh? Hasn't the shanty sings been held on the Thayer all along or has it just been 'That long'? Barry

Well, Barry I do not think RiGGy will be on the Hawaiian Landing. He will be on one of the stages. The landing is being done by a group of people who do gold ruch themes around the state. I will try and snag a phot of the landing though. Im sure thye S.F. Chronicle will cove it. It pland to be a big event. The chanties are held the first Satueday of every month. Dut to the activities this month, it was put off untill the 25th to coencide with the festival. We will let you know what happens Regards Winters Wages

Hi!

Bob Conroy and I had a great time in California. We did 3 concerts in 3 days, did no sightseeing and came back with sore throats but it was well worth it.

Last Friday night we met BSeed and spent time with him spinning yarns and trading songs. His renditions of a few Commander Cody numbers (including "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road") were particularly memorable.

We ran into a few Mudcatters aboard the tall ship 'Balclutha' on Saturday night. Riggy Rackin & Winter's Wages were there. I also met Margarita's sister, however, the concert was well attended and our time in the intermission was hectic so we didn't get to socialize as much as we would have liked.

We got to Joe Offer's house early on Sunday to make sure we could visit with him. For those of you who have never met Joe face-to-face, he is very gracious, interesting and enthusiastic. Joe provided a crowd of good singers. As a 'thank you,' I gave him a personal concert of "O'Brien of Tipperary" just before we ran out the door on our way back towards San Francisco.

My eyeglasses disassembled while I was driving so we did not make it to The Starry Plough pub in Berkeley for the Sunday night session. Sorry to miss you all. See you next time! Thanks to all for the hospitality.

All the best,
Dan

No sightseeing? Gee, Dan, how can you come to California without sightseeing? Well, I guess that means you should come back when you can relax. It sure was nice to have you here.
Dave Swan, you missed a good concert and a lot of fun. You want me to send your boss a postcard from Sacramento and tell him how much you enjoyed it? (grin)

Yep, the concert at Joe's house was much fun. Dan has one of those Irish voices that sounds like it's experienced every word it sings. Bob's banjo playing was gorgeous, and his open-tuned guitar picking was deep and resonant (contributed to by the fact that he was playing the Goodall guitar that Ginny bought me!!). These gentlemen were as interested in their audience as they were interested in the singers - Bob spent too much of his break time teaching me some banjo tunings and picking styles. Thanks, Bob and Dan. Rarely has so much talent travelled so far to play so much for so few. And thanks, Joe, for hosting the event.
