The Beatles were their own parody right from the start. Their films were parodies of the parodies and of Beatlemania. Often they contained mockumentaries themselves. Thus The Rutles didn't have a faint chance to top that. Harrison and the other Beatles knew well that their monuments could not be scratched.

Eric Idle as a reporter is not bad, though not at his best. As McSomething he is quite horrible, doesn't even try to slap his left-handed bass. He is actually known to be quite a good musician and songwriter when he is really involved.

There is so much good comedy still alive (even if the authors are dead); we should let all those -tles rest in peace.

I'm mainly referring to the mocumentary idea. There are many bands, and songs that were inspired by the Beatles, including the excellent Bangles. More for Rutlemaniacs here

Ollie Halsall was 'Leppo', the fifth Rutle.

George Harrison thought that the Rutles idea was great. He jokingly suggested to Ringo, Eric Idle and Neil Innes (who were all round for tea and biscuits at the time) that the four of them could go out as a Rutles tribute band.

Nobody funnier in this line than the Pre-fab Four in my opinion.

The guitar work for The Rutles was done by one of the most admired - but relatively unknown - guitarists in rock history: Ollie Halsall.
Played beautifully, died young.

For me it was the psychedelic ecstasy (no, not the drug ecstasy, I mean unspeakable joy) of Major Happy's Up-and-coming Once-upon-a-good-time Band. So different from the bland love songs and boring nascent heavy metal same-old-12-bars blues-based rock. "Back in '64" was probably my favourite. Oh for those happier days when people had no time for pouring scorn. Or scoring porn.

Dirk,Stig,Nasty and yes, even Barry. It's impossible to imagine the sixties without the Rutles. They changed the course of history with their music and irrepressible hair styles. To this very day I can't eat a sandwich without thinking of their haunting "Cheese and Onions" song.
