OK, this is me starting again, with the right date this time.
We have the wonderful Donal Maguire at Four Fools on Monday 10 January. From 8.15 p.m. at The Crown Hotel, Platt Lane, Standish, Nr Wigan, Lancs. Really looking forward to hearing this really superb singer. If you are in the area, don't miss it.

I won't miss it. I'm really looking forward to seeing Donal. What a wonderful singer and musician this guy is. And what a good selection of guests at the Crown lined up for this year. Not forgetting the singing weekend at the end of June. See you on Monday

Yeah, go and see and hear Donal he's a real singer. Something which less and less Mudcatters seem to be able to able to know when they hear them.

Looking forward to hearing Donal sing tonight; some of the comments on this thread are fine as far as they go, but he really is one of the most intelligent interpreters of song working within the tradition. He puts the story in the song right at the forefront whether he's singing the old ballad of John Barbary, or Brian O'Rourke's modern comic song The Banks of the Rhine, and he finds a tune and a rhythm that delivers the story with maximum impact. One of my favourite songs of his is the jazz-inflected version of Little Bridget Flynn which discovers a layer of pathos so often hidden by the more familiar "Paddywhackery" renditions.

Perhaps I should ask him to sing his wonderful song about "Mr Doyle and Gorgeous Raymond" tonight. :-)

By the way, Auldtimer, while there may be fewer and fewer Mudcatters who appreciate a real singer, we are not less able to distinguish between our adjectives and adverbs!

Matthew

Sorry, Matthew, that my post was not up to 'O' level or what ever the English grades are now. (I never sat any of them) If you are at the concert tonight tell Donal that all his friends in Ayrshire are thinking of him and hoping he is well.

Ok Auldtimer I'll pass your message on. Sorry about teasing your grammar; thank God nobody needs a GCSE to enjoy traditional songs, but it is nice to know that Donal has been passing some of his expertise on at the Folk degree course in Newcastle.

I'm just one of those pedants with nothing better to do than get annoyed by the signs at supermarket checkouts "5 items or less"!!!

Matthew
