You're all too conservative. In written Welsh, w and y are vowels as well. Lose those too.

Typical BS.

But, to make a sense of it: would it be possible to allow for longer thread titles, so that the most important vowels can be accomodated as well, and other sources of misunderstanding minimized? If the database cannot be "reorg'ed", a new field may be introduced containing short comments, to be shown on the main page.

Of course, there's always that dialogue from the Scottish Borders:

Y and W are sometimes vowels in English as well. Why?

Y and W both have ambiguous origins, so whether they represent consonants or vowels is often a matter of chance. While in modern English convention a certain Roman's name would be written 'Gaius Julius Caesar', he would have have recognized CAIVS IVLIVS CAESAR - three letters that have expanded over the centuries into eight, though none of his Vs have become W or Is Y.

Certain ancient languages (Egyptian, for one) developed systems of writing which had no vowels. For example, they might have a symbol which represent the 'syllable' k-t.

But without the vowel nobody knew if they were trying to say cat, kit, cot, coat, or kite. So they added other symbols above or below the line to give a hint. (These hints are called determinatives, because obviously a linguist couldn't use an embarrassingly clear word like 'hint'.)

I don't know the details, but I suppose there was a symbol which conveyed 'living thing,' so that when we saw k-t, we decided it was a cat. This system may have worked for people who only wrote about a limited number of things (kings, wars, gods, crops, livestock), but it obviously would get quite cumbersome in modern times.

No, our writing may not be perfect, but we better stick with vowels.

Leenia, you didn't mention Arabic and Hebrew for the no-vowel list.

And the letter J. It just sort of crept in there when we were getting along swell with the letter I (a vowel). So J is a sort of bastard vowel.

Hi, Uncle Dave. I knew Hebrew didn't use vowels, but I think Arabic does, at least today. I was reading a book that showed how the tenses of verbs in Arabic are changed by changing the vowels.

Anybody know any more about this?

If there's no J in Welsh how come there are so many people with the surname Jones?

I don't think I've ever seen Jones written in Welsh. My understanding is that Welsh surnames were a gift from the English government to the British people.

In most countries H is not pronounced, like it is in olde England.SO, why is an a not used? (A historic, instead of an historic)

Let h's rot in hell, he said with an Hallelujah chant :)

Always sound your haitches! It shows good breeding and correct pronunciation -- and one day you might hear the Queen say, "'ey, 'enry! There's kippers fer tay!"

Well, where do Jehovah's Witnesses stand on YEC and creationism?

Many may say, who cares, why do you ask? I dunno, I was just curious as to just how many "non mainstream" religions support it.I know, it is only a minor sampling of one. But, some of the articles from Eatchtower and Awake are quite dismissive of the concept (not that they do not have their own ideas, that one could question, if one had the time, or interest).

Regardless, even the Jehovah's Witnesses seem to be "very down" on creationism and YEC (according to this article , anyway. So, you don't have to "take them on" on this topic when they come to your door:)

Not quite, Ed. They only say Jehovah because the original masoretic text didn't acquire vowels for nearly a millenium by which time the standard Western version had guessed that they were e-o-a.

"J is a consonant in English, but some nations use it as a vowel --than which nothing could be more absurd. Its original form, which has been but slightly modified, was that of the tail of a subdued dog, and it was not a letter but a character, standing for a Latin verb,

_jacere_, "to throw," because when a stone is thrown at a dog the dog's tail assumes that shape. This is the origin of the letter, as expounded by the renowned Dr. Jocolpus Bumer, of the University of Belgrade, who established his conclusions on the subject in a work of three quarto volumes and committed suicide on being reminded that the j in the Roman alphabet had originally no curl."
Ambrose Bierce quotes (American Writer, Journalist and Editor, 1842-1914)
